I don't bloody want lasagne

Due to things going on at the moment for me, I am in a foul/sad/unhappy/miserable mood today. I am due to go to my friends house tonight, but:

  1. she is making lasagne. I don't want bloody lasagne - no dinner put in front of me right now will cheer me up, I want dinner but couldn't tell you what I would want .. if anything
  2. she has told me her 2 teen DD will be there for dinner too. No disrespect to her DDs, they are lovely, but I can just as well sit at home with my DDs and have dinner, which I might as well do if her DD will be with us ? why would I want to sit with her DDs when I can play happy families at home with mine? no malice or sarcasm intended by that

I probably sound ungrateful for her inviting me and offering dinner. Imo, my friend just wants the adult conversation/company, rather than spend the eve with her just her DDs who just sit on their phones all eve, if not in their rooms - but that is not my problem.

Just say your not feeling it today and will be shit company...
If a friend came to mine in foul mood like your saying you best have some space dont spread your mood .

It's not about the friend, or the dinner arrangements though, is it? OP has been clear she's got some crap going on, and just wanted to vent. That doesn't make her a shit friend.

Then why not vent about her shit, not attack a friend for daring to cook for her?

Because she doesn't want to, and she's not slagging her friend off.

Then she needs to cancel rather than spoil her friend’s night too.

It’s not rocket science and the reason the OP has chosen to post in such a petulant way is because she wants a reaction.

Exactly. She’s lapping up all the coddling.

Yes she is. She called her weird for 8nci6herbto family dinner.

So what. Honestly what is wrong with people like you.

I'd be 'lapping up coddling' if I felt rubbish too.

Thesafetygeneral · Yesterday 21:14

You sound like great company. Probably best you make an excuse and stay at home

Rosesanddaffs · Yesterday 21:17

@woofywoof It takes time and effort to cook for guests and you sound very ungrateful.

I’ve had guests behave this way and I really wish they had stayed at home, it sours the mood for everyone.

Do her a favour and tell her you aren’t coming. I hope she pours herself her favourite drink and enjoys her lasagne without you there.

As an side, I think it is weird to invite me over to have dinner around the table, with her family .. maybe that is just me though, but why would anyone do that ??

It's either you all have dinner together, both sets of kids plus adults, or it's an adult night only. No point leaving your poor kids alone, only to sit with another set of someone else's kids instead. What's the point??

Yes it's weird. I wouldn't do it.

Nothing is wrong with me thanks. I just don’t confuse offering sympathy with coddling someone and validating every little grievance . I’m perfectly entitled to think the OP is being ungrateful to a friend that has done nothing wrong .

Just don’t go then. Jeeeze.

To be fair OP, that is quite normal. When you have family, you normally don't banish them when you have a friend over, Lots of people feel dining en famille is a warm and friendly invitation, and I am sure her intentions are good.

And yes, her dds will be there, but isn't the point that your friend will be too?

That is what is different from you just staying home.

Lots of people feel dining en famille is a warm and friendly invitation

To be fair to op, two uninterested teenagers on phone don’t create that warm and inviting family atmosphere you mentioned.

Think you made the right decision OP. Sometimes it's better for everyone to just hunker down until we've worked out our feelings enough to handle them around other people.
Hope things get better for you soon

Gentlydoesit2 · Today 09:39

Sounds like you'd be terrible company so say you're ill? Also you are an adult... Although acting like a toddler... So you can just say no.

I’m glad you didn’t go.
She sounds lovely and it wouldn’t have been fair on her.

Invite your friend over to yours next week and then you won’t have to worry about her DCs and can plan a meal that you actually like.
She can then also leave if you’re being bad company.

I think you made the right call. I hope you’re feeling better/brighter today OP.

Yes, you do sound ungrateful, and hard work. Your friend needs a better friend to be honest.
