I don't bloody want lasagne

Due to things going on at the moment for me, I am in a foul/sad/unhappy/miserable mood today. I am due to go to my friends house tonight, but:

  1. she is making lasagne. I don't want bloody lasagne - no dinner put in front of me right now will cheer me up, I want dinner but couldn't tell you what I would want .. if anything
  2. she has told me her 2 teen DD will be there for dinner too. No disrespect to her DDs, they are lovely, but I can just as well sit at home with my DDs and have dinner, which I might as well do if her DD will be with us ? why would I want to sit with her DDs when I can play happy families at home with mine? no malice or sarcasm intended by that

I probably sound ungrateful for her inviting me and offering dinner. Imo, my friend just wants the adult conversation/company, rather than spend the eve with her just her DDs who just sit on their phones all eve, if not in their rooms - but that is not my problem.

As an side, I think it is weird to invite me over to have dinner around the table, with her family .. maybe that is just me though, but why would anyone do that ??

To be friendly?

As a French person, I find that the most normal/natural thing in the world 😁😁
Fwiw what do you exoect your friend to do with her dds? Kick them out first the evening? Having a sit down meal with your friend but Theyre not ‘invited’?

Ok, appreciate it’s not helping you.
But I suspect you’re just in a bad mood today and I’d just cancel saying you’re not good company.

I'm British and I think it's normal and natural!

That would be a pretty normal thing to do in my world too…..

Yep, same.

scienceteachersarefun · Yesterday 15:46

Don't go. Contact her now.
Perhaps get a referral for counselling to deal with the other stuff.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · Yesterday 15:48

I love lasagne. I get youre not feeling it and I hope you feel better soon but I would cancel as it would be miserable for her as well.

It's not weird. She needs to feed her teenagers. What else is she going to do with them? Send them up to their rooms with a piece of toast while you eat the lasagne?

What does it matter if they're on their phones or in their rooms?

If you don't want to go, don't go. But none of this is your friend's fault, and it's weird to be moaning about her when you're clearly the one with the problem. You'd find something to complain about whatever she offered you.

scoopsahoooy · Yesterday 15:48

You sound like you're in a horrid mood OP. Cancel - doesn't sound like you'd have fun or be very good company.

GintyMcGinty · Yesterday 15:48

Tell her you are in a shitty mood and that you are going to stay home.

Then open a bottle of wine, get a takeaway and fire up Netflix

Sorry you are having a rubbish time.

Why not say you'd be poor company tonight but that you'd love to go another day?

A little white lie would not hurt if you are feeling this way (we all feel like that sometimes). You could be coming down with a bad head cold or something like that? A lasagna freezes well or is even better the next day,so not harm done on the food front if you don't go.

If I invite a friend over for dinner, my teenage and younger children would be there. I can't just make them disappear.

scienceteachersarefun · Yesterday 15:53

Is the issue that you want to talk to your friend about your problems had don't want her daughters there?

Xmasbaby11 · Yesterday 15:56

Hard to respond without knowing you or your friend. Do you normally go out for dinner just the two of you? If it’s something different from usual plans and you don’t like the idea, you should have spoken up earlier. At this stage I echo pp and think all you can do is say you’re coming down with someone and postpone.

It’s not weird, you’re just in a snappy mood.

Moonnstarz · Yesterday 15:58

Considering it's a friend why not say what you have said on here. You are having a bad day, not great company etc so can you rearrange.

I am guessing being invited to a family meal is because it is convenient. What would you rather do? Maybe make that suggestion for another date.

LouisFuton · Yesterday 15:59

Ah at least you've recognised you won't be good company! I'd just cancel but if you can't face that just buck up and be nice!

MyEasterBonnet · Yesterday 16:00

I feel sorry for your friend, who is probably currently shopping for and making a bloody lasagne that you don’t want, but that there isn’t anything else you’d want in place of it. She’s been looking forward to seeing you and having a catch up with who she considers a friend. I hope you cancel rather than go around and make her feel like she’s down something wrong for wanting to see and feed you, when really the problem is yours.

Glowingup · Yesterday 16:00

You sound really nasty. She’s invited you for dinner and your response is to say she’s weird for inviting you, rubbishing the food she is making and slagging off her children. Don’t go then. I’d be really upset if a friend was venting on social media about being invited to my house for dinner.

Pull yourself together and give yourself a kick up the bum. Go out, get some fresh air and exercise, and walk off your bad mood. By the time you're finished kicking the pavement, putting the world to rights and telling every fucker what you think of them in your head, you'll have worked up an appetite. Then you eat a bit of her lasagne, the kids will fuck off out of the way sharpish because they don't want to be in your company any more than you want to be in their's, and then you can get pissed on red wine and all will be right with the world again.

This.

I bet you'll feel better if you go.

YelliwFinnTuner · Yesterday 16:05

you’re just a ray of sunshine aren’t you?!
good god, I'm frankly surprised you have friends

Thereshewasjustwalkingdownthestreet · Yesterday 16:05

Maybe she’s just being nice and thinks you might want to see her? However given your mood, please don’t go. I would much rather my friends cancelled and said ‘sorry I’m in a horrible mood, I need to stay home’. I feel like this sometimes and no one would make me feel better!

She's not saying this in real life just admitting she's a right moody cow! What's wrong with that? It's how she deals with it that matters

I want lasagne so much that as a result of this thread I've just made one to have tomorrow night.

Roast butternut squash with butter beans and sage, spinach and ricotta, bechamel, pasta. I love autumn food.

Please invite me over to share this lasagne. I’ll even eat it at a table with your DC!

Switcher · Yesterday 16:15

I don't have any friends who would invite me over for a Friday night meal at all any more, so your post just makes me feel sad on many levels. We're all so alienated from each other.

Maybe she likes you? A novel concept on here I know!

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 16:18

Maybe shes inviting you because she can tell you arent feeling too good and thought you might like it.
If you dont want to go then cancel. Politely.
