What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

NotWaitingPatiently · 11/10/2026 14:34

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

They sound lovely, but they have no place on a roast dinner 😀

Oh they do! They’re bloody lovely Smile

Daftypants · 12/10/2026 18:54

I rarely do a traditional roast but I do often do an all in one traybake dinner .
One recent recipe was red onions , red peppers, a large tomato, olives , a bit of leftover chorizo and chicken thighs ( bone in , skin on ) served with some orzo pasta.
Relatively inexpensive and used up stuff I had in the fridge

pineapplecrushed · 12/10/2026 19:00

Roast dinners aren't expensive.

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

You're horrible. Go away

I love my portmeirion dinner plates. The gravy doesn't run off the side.

I love them too ❤️

Roast dinners aren't expensive.

That would entirely depend on how much money you have surely?

Mirrorlolo · 12/10/2026 20:09

Yesterday I cooked a £6 honey roast ham with roasties and veg. It fed 4 adults - in laws were visiting. I sent ILs home with sliced ham for their lunch. I used it to make chicken and ham pie. There's enough pie left for lunch tomorrow. For dinner I'll slice and pan fry. the remaining ham and serve with home made chips and salad. So total of 12 meals - 50 pence per serving. No ham for at least a month tho :)

Spatchcocked chicken
Roasted cauliflower (tossed in oil, salt, pepper and tumeric
Carrots cooked in orange juice
Mashed potato
Feeds 4 for about £4 per person

TidyRose · 12/10/2026 20:35

We (two of us) had a Spatch-cock chicken from local butcher on Saturday, it gave us some nice slices for Sunday with salads, no cooking day. and some less attractive pieces of meat tonight, Monday, with Heinz baked beans, small jacket potato and a fried egg.
Six adult meals, less than £5.00.
Spatchcock is thin and spread out so cooks quickly.

I saw a recipe on TikTok just this week from a chef called Amy Sheppard for sage and onion chicken balls and I thought they looked quite tasty.

I made those turkey/chicken and stuffing balls yesterday, with roast potatoes (M&S) and the creamy cabbage and leek that Amy Sheppard also does - very low effort and all very good. Would easily be doable for midweek.

I don’t think of a Sunday dinner being a particularly expensive meal, apart from putting the oven on! It’s mostly vegetables.

It is an expensive meal when you don’t have a lot of money, only DD and me to cater for, and we have roast chicken, roast tatties, peas, carrots, sometimes green beans, skirlie and gravy as our Christmas Dinner.

Maybe one other during the year.

Pliudev · 12/10/2026 21:20

Pork loin is often quite cheap. But really, whenever we have Sunday roast, it lasts for at least two more meals so doesn't seem too expensive. We had topside yesterday, cold with baked potatoes and salad today and will be curried with mushrooms tomorrow. Then again, there are only two of us or three if you count the dog.

What is skirlie?

What’s wrong with Portmeirion plates!? I have the full set and they are lovely to use and great quality 😁

Some of the rude replies on here are hilarious, how do people get so wound up over a roast dinner…

If I’m cooking I will do roast chicken, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, broccoli cheese, mushy peas , stuffing and Yorkshire pudding.

I am a bit of a heathen though as I don’t like gravy!

Retrogamer · 12/10/2026 21:24

Money is really tight for us. If we have a "roast" it's usually sausages.
Christmas is when we have a nicely roasted chicken.
Everything else is fairly affordable as it's made from scratch and from the garden.

I have the pasta bowls of that same set. I love them too! I bought them from the outlet shop and broke one, now I can't find a replacement.

What is skirlie?

A Scottish delicacy made of fried onions, oatmeal and salt to taste.

Fry onions until they are slightly burnt, add the oatmeal and salt and cook together til they’re nicely bound, I then put the whole thing into a foil wrap and cook in the bottom of the oven for about 20 minutes.

There are fancier ways of doing it, but that’s how I like mine. Absolutely delicious!

It’s lovely, and pretty much a staple of a Scottish Roast, having said that, DD hates it! 😂

You can look for Portmeirion Botanic garden in charity shops (although rarely these days) and emporiums. Also, there's a Facebook page dedicated just to Portmeirion pottery buying and selling.

Pork shoulder is often cheaper than pork loin.
Chicken thighs are tasty and economical and a whole chicken- eve cheaper.

Many slow roasted meats used to be very cheap- ox cheek, lamb shanks etc bt not anymore.

Belly pork is cheaper still and full of flavour, (unlike fillet) slow roasted with garlic so as much fat as possible cooks away.
Then the potatoes can be roasted in the lovely garlicky fat. Serve with lots of cabbage or similar greens and apple sauce.
I wouldn’t turn my nose up at Yorkshires either.

How unkind. Do you talk to people like this in real life?
How dare someone try to put a meal on the table for their family.

Fantastic! My interest is definitely piqued and I'm going to add them to my list of things to make 🙂

Won’t a slow cooked pork loin be dry?

I am researching hormones etc in meat and as organic is prohibitively expensive- I can only suggest cauliflower cheese…

We always have an organic chicken which is delicious but 20-25 quid!
