What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

NotWaitingPatiently · 11/10/2026 14:34

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

A porchetta - pork belly joint and herbs rolled up together.

Pork belly is very cheap and turning it into porchetta makes it feel very fancy

@AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer do you have a recipe? Do you leave the crackling skin on and roll it inside ? Sounds lovely.

Xmasbaby11 · 11/10/2026 22:59

Lovely op! I fancy roast pork now!

we usually have roast chicken with two veg, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. I think the chicken is about £6 snd there’s always enough left either for another meal or a few sandwiches. The whole meal is very reasonable and feels like a bit of an occasion.

Sad to read about people cutting costs with factory farmed
meat. Cheap cuts- brilliant.

Did someone mention Portmeirion Botanic Garden? ❤️
I have gained quite a bit more since these pictures!
Our cheapest roast is usually pork or gammon - especially if found on Booths reduced counter

My low cost go to - M&S do 2 or 3 higher welfare chicken legs for £1.50, say x2 if you're feeding 4 = £3, 45p for a bag of carrots, say 1kg of potatoes thats £1 from a £2 2 kilo bag, £1.50 for Paxo stuffing, yorkshires (cheaper to make your own) but £2.10 for a bag of four large ones, then say £1.30 a bag of peas to serve 4, 22p for 4 servings of M&S gravy granules, that's less than £10 for a roast for four adults including the trimmings from M&S including higher welfare meat. And actually one pack of chicken legs does me and my 15 and 11 year old.

SheSpeaks · 11/10/2026 23:18

We have a roast dinner and dessert every Sunday.

today roast chicken, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, roast sweet potatoes, honey parsnips, steamed carrots, green beans, broccoli, gravy. Apple pie and cream.

chicken £6, 6 eggs £2, milk and flour maybe 50p. Root veg perhaps £2, green beans were frozen, so fresh veg maybe £1.50, condiments and gravy 50p. Apples free from a tree, pastry maybe £1 mostly on butter, sugar. Cream another £1. So £14.50 most likely, all in, fed 7 and have leftovers - including some Yorkshires kids will have tomorrow, some leftover chicken for sandwiches and half the apple pie.

roasts are hard to beat for value and ease

LandSsmum · 11/10/2026 23:19

Has to be chicken. Beef is only for special occasions here these days 🥺

NorthEastNancy · 11/10/2026 23:25

We've had corned beef stew today. Potatoes, leeks and carrots all from father in law's allotment. Swede from Tesco. Corned beef is £4.10 these days!

I left a pan full round my Mam and Dad's as they were getting back from holiday today and me, dh and ds had the rest with Yorkshire puds. Delicious and very cheap!

❤️ Portmeirion Botanic Gardens. Proper rims, so food doesn't fall off (important with children), bouncable (I'm clumsy), and different flowers for each person (I'm the Christmas Rose)), DH is the Treasure Flower).

Am afraid my cheap roast is vegetarian.

Homemade nut roast (that DH had the AUDACITY to tell DMIL that he preferred to hers 😱), roast spuds and parsnips, Yorkshires, savoy cabbage, carrots, peas. Lots of gravy.

I'm on the lookout for a good, homemade vegetarian gravy recipe. Was thinking of red wine and onions, but most of those need beef stock. Any bright ideas? I'll use granules, but would love a failsafe recipe.

I got a vegan bouillon from Amazon . Stopped using all stock cubes as they all have palm oil in them. Even the vegetation kallo.

I feel like aside from the meat, a roast is a nice cheap meal really. Veggies, stuffing, homemade yorkshires and gravy are all nice and cheap and I usually just buy whatever meat is on offer or sometimes gammon, we are a greedy family so if I do a chicken I sometimes bulk it out with chipolatas as well to stretch the chicken to further meals.

Ive recently starting making a one pot peach pudding which I serve with cream, all gets mixed together in one baking dish and bunged in the oven once I’ve served the roast, it’s absolutely delicious and uses tinned peaches which I buy the cheap ones at like 45p a can and the rest of the ingredients I always have in so it’s a super easy, cheap crowd pleaser.

That pudding sounds lovely, would you share the recipe? Many thanks Smile

OP your dinner looks lovely and this thread isgreat and has given me lots of ideas. I also love your plates - I always think one day I'd love to get a proper matching set of dinner plates instead of our random selection of odds and ends of crockery and then I will feel like a proper grown up BlushGrin

TallagallaPenguin · 12/10/2026 00:58

Loving the roast dinners and the comedy idiot trolls who don’t know anything about food 🤣

Mine this week was not exactly a roast, but using lamb shoulder in a tomatoey onion and aubergine Moroccan stew with harissa paste etc. It was supposed to be lamb shanks but they were (as ever, when I need them) missing from the shelf so chopped the lamb shoulder into chunks instead and worked with that. Glorious. (The Nigel slater recipe from Real Cooking).

Another one is cooking a big gammon, roasting it a bit at the end with something lovely all over it, and having it with cauli cheese and new potatoes, then loads of ham leftover for all week. It’s so forgiving I can manage to get it on when I’m wfh for easy midweek if we feel the need.

I just make this one from bbc good food

it’s not served as a roast here but I just do with the usual trimmings and obviously there’s no need to get one so big unless you’re feeding a crowd. Absolute yes to crackling!

Next level porchetta on a serving board

Make this impressive porchetta main for a crowd without breaking the bank – this rolled pork joint is great for a special occasion

I roast chicken thighs with all the veg, and some stuffing, in one tray. A very handy, tasty meal if I’m in my caravan.

I’m very jealous of all your lovely Sunday roast dinners.
😩

I have a veggie DH and a vegan DS and neither of them actually enjoy eating food very much so the only time I can cook a roast chicken dinner with veg is on Christmas Day and the two of them eat a bit of veg with chips and that’s it. They won’t eat Christmas pudding either. They’re both very fussy and annoying.

I keep hoping some kind friend will invite me to join them on Christmas Day and I can leave those two to starve on crappy rations. They honestly wouldn’t care 🤣🤣

Come and be my friend, we’d have you over for a roast with all the trimmings!

I use this Gordon Ramsey recipe for Yorkshire puddings. But iI can't be bothered with whisking so all the ingredients get chucked in my jug blender. I do leave it for about 30 mins to get to room temp. https://www.gordonramsayrestaurants.com/recipes/yorkshire-puddings/amp

Then I put some oil in a baking tray with the sausages. Cook on 220 until they have a little colour and the oil is super hot. Chuck the batter into the tray as soon as I take it out of the oven. Back in to the oven ASAP. Turn it down to 200 and then in about 15 mins it tends to be ready.

You can't open the oven whilst its cooking or it will flatten. I learned that one the hard way.

Thanks HedgerowD! Will give this a go!

GarlicEverything · 12/10/2026 07:16

A chicken 'crown' from Morrison's 3 for £10 mains offer. It's just the breast part of the bird, roasts easily in the air fryer and usually turns out plump with a good texture. It would feed four adults - or twelve if you're a diehard Mumsnetter 😂 It works out around the same price as a small chicken but there's more meat on it.

deplorabelle · 12/10/2026 07:50

Nothing to add on the meat suggestions except for lots of veg so you can serve smaller meat portions (am a bit of a mumsnet chicken person but it's always done by Thursday when the bones go into the stock pot in time for food waste collection on Fri).

I now don't bother cutting the carrots into either batons or rounds - just peel, top and tail then put them in the bottom of the roasting dish as a meat stand. They cook really well that way and the juices from the carrots help the gravy go further. Whole mushrooms or onions also help (mushrooms roasted with chicken are to die for but the big ones make the gravy go black). I make proper gravy but the teens make their own bisto because they prefer it 🤔.

BeddysMum · 12/10/2026 17:53

I don't eat meat so mine are super cheap! Potatoes, seasonal veg and homemade stuffing.

NotWaitingPatiently · 11/10/2026 19:49

The potatoes are boulangere.
Thin slices of potato and onion layered in a dish. covered with stock and baked.
I like it because it's not as heavy as dauphinoise.

They sound lovely, but they have no place on a roast dinner 😀

Not a roast as such but minced lamb with veggies, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings.
The lamb is frozen - £4.96 a bag from Asda.
We actually do 2 bags and then there are some left overs.
Can also be done in the slow cooker.
It's such a hearty meal.

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

Just why do you think that's necessary? I hope you feel better for making someone else's day a little bit worse

It looks lovely and tasty

When I incinerate it. It's worth nothing! Unfortunately I do this relatively often. I should, of course, use a timer.
