What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

❤️ Portmeirion Botanic Gardens. Proper rims, so food doesn't fall off (important with children), bouncable (I'm clumsy), and different flowers for each person (I'm the Christmas Rose)), DH is the Treasure Flower).

Am afraid my cheap roast is vegetarian.

Homemade nut roast (that DH had the AUDACITY to tell DMIL that he preferred to hers 😱), roast spuds and parsnips, Yorkshires, savoy cabbage, carrots, peas. Lots of gravy.

I'm on the lookout for a good, homemade vegetarian gravy recipe. Was thinking of red wine and onions, but most of those need beef stock. Any bright ideas? I'll use granules, but would love a failsafe recipe.

Stuffing or lentil roast, yorkshires, roast potatoes, peas, carrots, broccoli.

Being veggie is very cheap!

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

You look like Sloth from The Goonies

You can sub a bit of marmite in hot water for the beef stock, or my favourite but not as cheap is Massel kosher "beef" stock (which is vegan and GF).

Looks lovely OP. We like boned shoulder of pork. Really economical. Has to be cooked long and slow but the result is delicious - makes lovely gravy.

FairyBatman · 11/10/2026 19:52

M&S chicken legs are great both because they are inexpensive and because by preference we would all have a leg, and you don’t get many three legged chickens.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 11/10/2026 19:53

Slightly , but not off topic , sainsburys have 'Better than half price ' on pork loin and 1/2 legs of lamb and as someone said above , medium chickens for £3.66.
I bought 8 half legs , 3 chickens and 2 pork's. Will do me until the New Year.
OP I love those style of potato, its like what's put on a Hotpot , sainsburys do very similar and are called crispy potatoes. Your dinner looks lovely , id demolish that

We had a Sainsbury whole chicken - £3.66 - got it with our online shop this morning. With roasted potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and greens with gravy. Served 5 with leftovers like a real MN chicken!

Sorry, but £3.66 for a whole chicken?

No thanks. Have you starved yourself for the whole weekend?

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 11/10/2026 19:55

Oh and to add . I have it on very good authority in about 2 weeks time Sainsburys are doing whole legs of lamb better then half price
That's a cheap roast dinner right there . I split my whole legs into 2 for 2 Sunday roasts

I love my portmeirion dinner plates. The gravy doesn't run off the side.

I really like your plates!

You'd better not eat at my house. All my plates are vintage.

That was a very catty comment from you.

Pork shoulder is often cheaper than pork loin.
Chicken thighs are tasty and economical and a whole chicken- eve cheaper.

Many slow roasted meats used to be very cheap- ox cheek, lamb shanks etc bt not anymore.

Yep . See my post . Bought some today. 3 infact .
If you know how to split it into 8 peices .. or is it 6 ? stretch even further

Cantonet · 11/10/2026 19:57

Ottolenghi Simple Too Roast chicken thighs cooked confit style with chick peas, tomatoes, peppers, garlic and Ras el hanout. I did use the slightly pricier king chickpeas from M&S but a tin would have been fine.

purpleme12 · 11/10/2026 19:57

I made my first roast dinner the other day!
It's chicken with roast potatoes and for vegetables we had carrots and cabbage and leeks

(We did have gravy on it as well)

I was happy

What sort of cut are those spuds called?

Boulangere potatoes. Sliced and layered with onions and herbs (thyme preferably) in veg or chicken stock in the oven.

Boreded · 11/10/2026 19:58

Going to the in-laws 😂

Great job, roast your potatoes for longer next time xx

How does the marmite compare to stock, in terms of saltiness?
Looks like the 'beef' stock is about £8 a tub on Amazon.

Might try the Marmite stock substitute, in a red wine and onion gravy recipe, and see how that goes. Thank you!
