What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

No way would there be gravy poured over them and the onions would not be separate.

There isn’t gravy poured over them. They’re cooked in stock. And the onions look as though they’ve been baked mixed in with the potatoes. You said you made yours and served it with stew. How did you keep the stew gravy separate from the potatoes given that both dishes are wet ?

autumnalannie · 11/10/2026 20:54

To be honest I don’t wildly love meat, but when we roast it’s either a cheap beef joint slow cooked for hours (I say cheap, it’s almost doubled in price in the past five years), a chicken or a gammon.

but mostly I love the veg, tonight was roasted parsnips, carrots, sweet potatoes, had some steamed broccoli and peas on the side. Amazingly crispy roast potatoes. And a Yorkshire pudding. Would often do a cauliflower cheese too.

SillyGooseyGander · 11/10/2026 20:54

We had a pork joint from sainsbury's called (nicer than it sounds) Boston pork butt joint. You can either roast it on its own for 2hrs, or add some stock/bone broth and cover with foil and cook on a lower heat for 3hrs to make pulled pork. It's a big joint - today's was 8 servings and cost around £6. That's done 5 of us for a roast dinner with potatoes, Yorkshires, carrots, broccoli & cauli. There's enough meat left tomorrow that i will shred in to ragu type sauce and have with pasta.

I don't find whole chicken too expensive, but we rarely have anything left from it apart from the bones for stock.

We had toad in the hole with cabbage, root veg and roast potatoes, then a small apple crumble as a couple of apples needed eating. I think it's a lower cost roast.

Calsport · 11/10/2026 20:54

Whole chicken £7
Six potatoes maybe 50p
Carrots and swedes 50p
Yorkshire puds eggs, flour, milk £1
Gravy using the veg and meat juices and a stock cube for another 30p

Total £9 Ish for four and chicken left over for lunch sandwiches tomorrow.

I was just about to say the same - I would suggest that if there is someone on this thread who doesn't know how to cook boulangère potatoes, it is not the OP.

Why is it rude to critique a meal?

There’s a difference between critique and unpleasant for the sake of it.

Erm, you served yours with gravy, why can't OP?

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

What a shitty horrible comment. What a sad life you must lead.

Your dinner looks lovely OP!

It’s Sunday night and it’s now 9pm. Isn’t it about time for your bath ? You’ve got school in the morning.

Including yourself.

Love the plates. Dinner is a big no. Would I eat it if I was very hungry. Probably. 1/10 for the plate.

Rude again.

Why do you hate the OP?

Way more likely the poster hates themselves.

Placemats is obviously a troll, just ignore.

upinaballoon · 11/10/2026 21:04

All main courses should be awash with gravy. All puddings should be awash with custard. And carrots can be cut whatever way you want them to be and they are still completely valid. I have a little ambition to peel carrots so that I make them into little torpedo shapes and use the small peeled-off pieces in soup.

NotWaitingPatiently · 11/10/2026 21:05

I won't lose any sleep over Placemats!

Imagine being so bored you have to troll a Sunday dinner thread🤣

Pork shoulder, turkey drumstick or a couple of chicken legs- generally comes in around £1.50- £2 a head depending on how greedy we are feeling. I also roast a chicken but lift the breasts off and freeze for a couple of stir fry type meals, then you get soup/stew from the carcase as well, again under £2 a head.

I love my portmeirion dinner plates. The gravy doesn't run off the side.

Looks lovely and I love the Port Meirion plates. Timeless

Seaside3 · 11/10/2026 21:37

I love roast dinners and would literally eat them most days. We have chicken, pork, sausages or beef stew with all the vegetables. Sometimes yorkies, usually not. Then crumble and custard or rice pudding.

A porchetta - pork belly joint and herbs rolled up together.

Pork belly is very cheap and turning it into porchetta makes it feel very fancy

Chicken legs are a good shout. Meat has got so expensive.

I roast chicken drumsticks and thighs these days because no one in this house likes the breast off a roast chicken anyway, and they are quicker and more economical.

Missj25 · 11/10/2026 21:44

I worked until 3 today , bought roast beef for 18 euro on way home , potatoes cost 4.50 .
3 small turnips for 2.00 , tin of sweetcorn for 2.00 , all in local supermarket .
All ready for 6.30 , put on at 4 .
I roast the potatoes with juices from meat poured over them .
I dissolve 2 oxo cubes in boiling water , add juice from beef & thicken with bisto .
It’s yum 😋.
Fed 4 with enough left for sandwiches in morning 😊

Booboobagins · 11/10/2026 21:47

If you're willing to eat veggie, a nut roast is by far the cheapest sunday roast - stuffing mix, onions, veg, beans, nuts - make a roast that is way less than £3.60 a kilo (and £3.60 is a bargain for meat).

If I cook a roast, I do it plain so the dogs get sunday dinner too. Typically its pork or chicken, but i buy lamb when its on offer and beef when its c£5 a kilo or less. I buy 47p yorkies from aldi/lidl, cheapest potatoes, carrots, cauli/broccolli (hopefully grow my own veg next year when I move house). Like you @NotWaitingPatiently I suspect I spend c£2 a head too. For myself though, I'm a vegetarian, so my meal is about half that cost.

FurForksSake · 11/10/2026 21:48

A £12.50 shoulder of pork. It will do 2 adults, a ravenous teen and a relatively ravenous 11 year old for two days. I could push it to three.

We almost always have stuffing (paxo and I add extra water and breadcrumbs), carrots, broccoli, cabbage, parsnips and potatoes.

Tomorrow we will have pulled pork bbq wraps, add in lots of peppers and onions.

If we had enough I’d make garlic, soy and honey pork with rice and peppers, cabbage etc.

I do this with any roast, I’ll portion out the meat and people can have seconds of veg and there will often be pudding (rice pudding, steam pudding, pineapple upside down cake, cake, trifle, crumble…) and so people are happy.

if I was going for a lot of value I’d cook chicken thighs or drumsticks in gravy and strip those down.
