What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

❤️ Portmeirion Botanic Gardens. Proper rims, so food doesn't fall off (important with children), bouncable (I'm clumsy), and different flowers for each person (I'm the Christmas Rose)), DH is the Treasure Flower).

Am afraid my cheap roast is vegetarian.

Homemade nut roast (that DH had the AUDACITY to tell DMIL that he preferred to hers 😱), roast spuds and parsnips, Yorkshires, savoy cabbage, carrots, peas. Lots of gravy.

I'm on the lookout for a good, homemade vegetarian gravy recipe. Was thinking of red wine and onions, but most of those need beef stock. Any bright ideas? I'll use granules, but would love a failsafe recipe.

Can you share your nut roast recipe please?? Sounds great if it beats MIL’s!!!

Pork loin fillet for us- £4.42 from Lidl. Enough for the 5 of us; rolled in herbs then into a roasting tin with mini potatoes, chunks of sweet potato, leeks, onion, cherry tomatoes, slices of peppers, courgettes and a bit of olive oil. Cook for 30 minutes covered with foil then 30 minutes uncovered. Served with yorkshire puddings, broccoli, carrots and gravy. Easy, quick, cheap, yummy.

If we have a roast, we only ever buy higher welfare meat (ie with a recognised higher-welfare certification). We’d rather eat less meat, or not eat it at all, than buy cheap meat produced at the expense of animal welfare.

So it’s a bit more expensive but all the veg is cheap as chips, so it’s an inexpensive meal overall with lots of leftovers

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

Good job you're not eating it, then, isn't it! 👍 🙂

Pork, chicken or a piece of topside slow cooked.

Gammon is also qyite economical because it does a carbonara and chicken and ham pie later in the week.

I love leftover chicken and gammon pie

You can sub a bit of marmite in hot water for the beef stock, or my favourite but not as cheap is Massel kosher "beef" stock (which is vegan and GF).

Maggi is good for this as well, we find.

Well aren’t you a peach. And it’s not Boulangerie potatoes, it Boulangere potatoes. The carrots are julienne and show that OP has taken time and care with presentation. And the peas are, well, just peas. What’s your problem ?

Oh and here’s a photo of Boulangere potatoes ready to go in the oven, from Good Food magazine. Not too dissimilar to OP’s finished version.

ETA the bloody picture didn’t attach, but trust me OP they were just like yours.

Toad in the hole for me. The only joint I really like is beef and it’s too expensive

Will do - it's from a student cookbook, so really simple.

From memory, it is chopped mixed nuts, grated carrot, chopped onion, bread crumbs, thyme, stock and butter.

Either bake it in a loaf tin, or sometimes I usebit in a tart. Layer of short crust pastry, dollop of homemade chutney, topping of the nutroast mix. Bake for 20 mins.

I'll find the exact recipe tomorrow- I've made it for years, so tend to throw it all together without weighing. It isn't fussy, and relies on the natural flavors of the nuts, which is what I think DH prefers to his Mums.

All main courses should be awash with gravy. All puddings should be awash with custard. And carrots can be cut whatever way you want them to be and they are still completely valid. I have a little ambition to peel carrots so that I make them into little torpedo shapes and use the small peeled-off pieces in soup.

I’m with you on the custard but I don’t like masses of gravy as it tends to go cold.

They're brilliant.

Not quite a roast but I bought a pack of drumsticks today £2.15 1kg. Roasted those, and took all the meat off which there was surprisingly a lot of. Made a ‘marry me’ orzo. I’ll do a stock with the bones tomorrow and use the rest of the shredded chicken for a soup.

An easy roast for us is a chicken breast stuffed with stuffing and wrapped in bacon, with roast potatoes and vegetables, and probably a Yorkshire. Tons of gravy.

JoyousWriter · 11/10/2026 22:32

We had cherries from the freezer and a tin of custard because we've got a cold.

Your dinner looks lovely!

Chicken legs are a great cheap (and relatively quick) roast option. M&S's chicken is gorgeous and only £1.50 for 2 legs!

Have you tried Nigellas pea chicken bake?

There’s some serious physics going on there. It is to die for!

Chicken and Pea Traybake

I thought I had exhausted the culinary possibilities of a pack of frozen peas, but my friend, and excellent cook, Alex Andreou, led me by the hand — it does take a leap of faith — to his method of using them, still frozen, as the first layer of a trayb...

Yodeldodeldo · 11/10/2026 22:39

We do all the usual roast dinner veg and puddings, but the meat is gammon slow cooked in cola. Cheap, particulary useful leftovers, goes down well with the picky eaters.

We've got one who won't eat chicken, two won't eat lamb...

placemats · 11/10/2026 20:16

The critism stands though. No way would I eat that. It's a defrosted, deconstructed icky dinner.

The plates are nice.

Why don’t you show us some photos of your culinary masterpieces, then? If not, then please go away.

Piglet89 · 11/10/2026 22:46

@placematsI certainly wouldn’t be taking culinary criticism from someone who doesn’t know they’re called BOULANGERE potatoes.

Mosee · 11/10/2026 22:49

Chicken thighs, mixed frozen veg, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. No effort at all. Unbelievably delicious.

@WeMeetInFairIthilien try this Jamie Oliver one using veg stock cubes instead of beef ones ?
For the onion gravy:
4 medium red onions, peeled & finely sliced
5 tbsp balsamic or red wine vinegar
2 beef or chicken stock cubes (or concentrated veg stock)
Olive oil

1. Fry onions really slowly, in a little oil, covered for about 15 mins until soft.
2. Remove lid, turn the heat up and as soon as onions become golden brown, pour in vinegar and boil until it almost disappears.
3. Turn heat down, add rest of butter, crumble in stock cubes or concentrated stock pod and 2+1/2 cups of water and stir well. Simmer until nice gravy consistency.
