What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

A roast chicken, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds, stuffing, veg and gravy.
The usual.

ILoveKits · 11/10/2026 14:38

Pork, chicken or a piece of topside slow cooked.

Gammon is also qyite economical because it does a carbonara and chicken and ham pie later in the week.

It was yummy!

That's the worst roast dinner I've ever seen, it looks like a frozen ready meal.

I love my portmeirion dinner plates. The gravy doesn't run off the side.

The meal looks lovely, @OP, and I agree about the plate - gravy retention is important.

God why are people so unnecessarily rude?! Sounds lovely OP.

Absolutely no need for some of the rude comments.🙈

We had a Sainsbury whole chicken - £3.66 - got it with our online shop this morning. With roasted potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and greens with gravy. Served 5 with leftovers like a real MN chicken!

PhyllisBide · 11/10/2026 19:39

I don’t think of a Sunday dinner being a particularly expensive meal, apart from putting the oven on! It’s mostly vegetables.

Paradoes · 11/10/2026 19:39

This thread has mean comments.
So for beef i slow cook a cheaper joint and slow cook it for 4-6 hours and make enough for day two.

Otherwise chicken or pork but i dont love pork. My son loves honey roast gammon and the little joints are cheap.

ViciousCurrentBun · 11/10/2026 19:41

What sort of cut are those spuds called?

SquigglePigs · 11/10/2026 19:43

Your dinner looks lovely!

Chicken legs are a great cheap (and relatively quick) roast option. M&S's chicken is gorgeous and only £1.50 for 2 legs!

How unpleasant.

Paradoes · 11/10/2026 19:46

Chicken legs are a good shout. Meat has got so expensive.

BadSkiingMum · 11/10/2026 19:49

Good god, what possesses people to make these pointlessly unpleasant remarks.

LoftyPlumLion · 11/10/2026 19:49

Vegetarian Wellington, roast potatoes and it's sprout season, yum!

I'm trying to perfect a veg crumble recipe for Christmas, haven't done hugely well so far.

No doubt the reform voters will have a flounce!

AnnaQuayRules · 11/10/2026 19:49

I buy very little meat during the week, but do splurge on a chicken for Sunday dinner most weeks. I do buy organic, which bumps up the cost, but the veg are relatively cheap.

The potatoes are boulangere.
Thin slices of potato and onion layered in a dish. covered with stock and baked.
I like it because it's not as heavy as dauphinoise.

Chicken (thighs or whole if intending to make stock tomorrow), potatoes, veg.

Depending upon mood, adding different seasonings/herbs/marinades. Stick in airfryer, come back when it beeps.
