What's your inexpensive Sunday Roast?

NotWaitingPatiently · 11/10/2026 14:34

Today we are having a pork loin seasoned with herbs, slow-cooked on a bed of veg (which we'll use to make a gravy). Served with boulangere potatoes, peas and glazed carrots.

Pork was on offer at £3.50 a kilo; the whole joint cost £6.00, and there will be enough left for another meal.

The veg / stock / flour / seasonings cost less than £3.00.

Four adults fed for less than £2.00 per portion.

What are your inexpensive roasts?

Nope, not convinced re the pork. Been there on a tasting session and those frozen slices were grim.

The carrots and peas are frozen. Boulangerie potatoes? 😂

Some people just don’t know when to shut up.

Portmeirion Botanic Garden. I'm a collector, it's EVERYWHERE in my house and I keep saying I won't buy any more and then I see something and "well, just one more piece" 😂😂

Dinner looks good, julienne carrots, yum yum what time should I arrive and shall I bring wine?

@placemats

Its hilarious that you are convinced it can't be a real homemade meal.
I wouldn't know what a defrosted ready meal even looked like, I've never eaten one!

And tbf who would bother arranging it on a plate if it was a ready meal, waste of time…also I like your carrots like that, miles better to have batons than rounds, rounds are cut into ovals and put in stew in my house.

Whole chicken in the slow cooker. Stock reseved for tomorrow's soup.

Potatoes and carrots, both roasted, grown on my allotment.

Apples from my neighbours garden, blackberries from my allotment - into a crumble.

Blimey people are feisty this evening.

The OP has had her food and her dinner plates slated.

I also had the Sainsburys chicken on special offer, although I didn't ger round to using it.

We aren't a massive roast family, in fact I only tend to do a "proper" roast with all the trimmings at Easter and Christmas.

We do have variations of a roast (lamb chops, minted new potatoes with and veg and gravy or porkloin with mustard mash and veg, or roasted chicken with jacket potatoes and homemade coleslaw etc) but proper full on roasts are rare. We do all love a roast spud though and I often make them with steak or breaded chicken.

I love a roast, my lot can leave it forever it seems. So when I make a roast, it’s mostly for me. They just have to eat or cook for themselves.
My MIL used to love roasts too.

My oldest least favourite meat is lamb and I love lamb. The others doesn’t love lamb as much either.

Now we're talking 😅

Indeed microwave cooking is exactly what the @NotWaitingPatiently dinner looks like.

However I did give the benefit of the doubt that stove top and oven may have been used. But I'm not that rude

Great job, roast your potatoes for longer next time xx

The potatoes look fine, just how I like them. I can't stand crispy roasties.

Really? It looks awful. They are not boulangerie potatoes because I made those midweek with a steak stew. Carrots are never like that on homemade dinners. Sliced home cooked pork doesn't look like that. The peas. Ugh.

I don't know what you made midweek with a steak stew, but the potatoes in the photo look like perfectly good boulangère potatoes as found as a side dish in many a French home or restaurant.

Some people just don’t know when to shut up.

Including yourself.

Love the plates. Dinner is a big no. Would I eat it if I was very hungry. Probably. 1/10 for the plate.

Absolutely rubbish at making toad in the hole, usually cheat and end up being a ready made version.

Do you have a recipe you’d be happy to share? Or any tips?

thanks!

I use this Gordon Ramsey recipe for Yorkshire puddings. But iI can't be bothered with whisking so all the ingredients get chucked in my jug blender. I do leave it for about 30 mins to get to room temp. https://www.gordonramsayrestaurants.com/recipes/yorkshire-puddings/amp

Then I put some oil in a baking tray with the sausages. Cook on 220 until they have a little colour and the oil is super hot. Chuck the batter into the tray as soon as I take it out of the oven. Back in to the oven ASAP. Turn it down to 200 and then in about 15 mins it tends to be ready.

You can't open the oven whilst its cooking or it will flatten. I learned that one the hard way.

Why is it rude to critique a meal?

Snowie99 · 11/10/2026 20:44

Why is it rude to critique a meal?

There's critiquing as in offering fixable feedback, for example, if OP had said "I wonder if you might pass comment on my potatoes, as they're just missing a little something...' and you saying, "ah, if you try cooking them in chicken stock and turning the oven up for the last 15 minutes.... I made these just on Wednesday and they were a triumph"

Fine. Critique with the intention of helping the person improve, is all good.

...but instead , there's you going ... "ugh it looks like a fucking disgusting ready meal" over and over again

RedThroatedWarbler · 11/10/2026 20:48

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 11/10/2026 19:57

Yep . See my post . Bought some today. 3 infact .
If you know how to split it into 8 peices .. or is it 6 ? stretch even further

I understand people have to budget, but I would rather go without than eat a chicken that cheap.

Well aren’t you a peach. And it’s not Boulangerie potatoes, it Boulangere potatoes. The carrots are julienne and show that OP has taken time and care with presentation. And the peas are, well, just peas. What’s your problem ?

Oh and here’s a photo of Boulangere potatoes ready to go in the oven, from Good Food magazine. Not too dissimilar to OP’s finished version.

ETA the bloody picture didn’t attach, but trust me OP they were just like yours.

No way would there be gravy poured over them and the onions would not be separate.

I’ve only posted twice. Once with my suggestion of a roast and once in response to your rudeness.

You’re trolling now, so I’m out.

I’m very jealous of all your lovely Sunday roast dinners.
😩

I have a veggie DH and a vegan DS and neither of them actually enjoy eating food very much so the only time I can cook a roast chicken dinner with veg is on Christmas Day and the two of them eat a bit of veg with chips and that’s it. They won’t eat Christmas pudding either. They’re both very fussy and annoying.

I keep hoping some kind friend will invite me to join them on Christmas Day and I can leave those two to starve on crappy rations. They honestly wouldn’t care 🤣🤣

She can eat them however the fuck she likes.

They're still Boulangere potatoes, whether you make them that way it not.

Still waiting to see your fabulous steak stew and potatoes from Wednesday.

Id make a roast every fucking week if they're that fussy and met them eat a potato.

Why should you miss out??
