Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

That’s not weird, that’s the law!!

Absolutely. No big lights at all in our house unless we very specifically need them!

Hadenough32 · 10/10/2026 21:02

My weird one is that the cushions are only allowed on the sofa in the eve. In the day they're stacked on a coffee table..I can't stand them laying on the sofa in the day

Spiderx · 10/10/2026 21:07

We always had FHB ( family hold back) growing up in a family of 7 meant if guests came for tea , the posh cake our mum had made was for the guests to have first dibs

Our council collects cooked and raw food all in the same bag, which we put in the garden waste bin 🤷‍♀️

They can put almost anything in the anaerobic digester they use for food waste, but if my partner wants to compost stuff for the garden, you can’t put in meat or any cooked stuff although egg shells can go in. So we have two food waste bins - one for our compost heap and one for the council food collection - sorry, should have made myself clear! So cooked stuff and raw stuff goes in the one that’s collected but we save our raw fruit, veg, non-plastic tea bags and so on for the garden.

No pooing in the downstairs loo.

MariaDingbat · 10/10/2026 21:49

No. 1 rule: No outside clothes in bed! As in under the covers, you can sit on top of the bed but don't get into the bed in outside clothes. 2. Say sorry properly: look them in the eye and say it from the heart. 3. No helmet, no wheels: for bikes and scooters, not cars obviously.

I have never been in my loft or attic in all the houses I've lived in. I'm scared of spiders and any other living creatures that may lurk.
My mum however has hers (and her house) full to brim of crap like whisks of our hair from when we were 2.

Whisks of hair?!

No phones at the table.

SZJ · 10/10/2026 22:59

Wow, I’ve never heard of this “no big light” thing before today. Dimmable bulbs might be the answer?

I currently have nothing stored in my loft, as it needs to be cleaned and boarded, but can’t wait to put seasonal things up there to make more space in wardrobes. If it’s well organised, labelled and in plastic boxes I don’t see the issue.

The loft is the one part of my parent’s house that wasn’t an absolute nightmare to clear out as they only had Christmas and Halloween stuff up there. Don’t get me started on the mess of the garage, the shed and the study.

No glitter in the house. None of that bastard stuff shall pass my threshold!

I don’t care that your a greedy so and so but if you take the last of something you throw the evidence (the now empty bag, box or whatever). It is evil to allow others to live in the belief there is biscuits in the house when in fact there are none!

Also, when you take the last of something put it on the shopping list. I don’t appreciate having planned pasta with pesto only to find the teenagers had the pesto to make fancy deli sandwiches. The sandwiches are fine, the messing with my logistics are not. Just tell meeeeee!

I approve of these rules!

Booksandsport · 10/10/2026 23:20

No blue products, e.g. toilet cleaner, bleach, handsoap, shampoo, toothpaste...

My school used to use some really cheap smelling and strong smelling products so I associate it with that.

Greenjersey · 11/10/2026 01:03

Kippers must not be eaten unless I'm out for the day.

patooties · 11/10/2026 02:49

5 a day-that’s it

The loft rule is utterly daft! All the crap has to live somewhere and it certainly isn't going on display! Having said that, we converted our loft into two bedrooms, so there is very limited space now. We are down to essential crap - Xmas stuff and childhood rubbish that we just can't part with!

I don't have or store 'crap' in my house 🤷🏻

Ours is you do not ‘tinkle the piano keys unless you can play, chopsticks doesn’t count as playing!

DC1123 · 11/10/2026 09:01

Mine is to not bring home strangers - but we have a few of them stored in the loft.

See if you flush the loo or run the kitchen tap the shower goes cold. My dad used to run the kitchen tap when someone was in the shower coz he thought it was funny 🤣

OP I live in the loft

The rule was because the bathroom was at the back of the house, through the kitchen and the plumbing was obviously weird because flushing the loo made the kitchen tap run slightly. It was very odd.

I've lived in plenty of houses where running taps made the shower go cold and it would drive me mad! Thankfully, noone ever did it maliciously but nonetheless....

BassBug · 11/10/2026 12:27

Kill or harm a spider in my house and you will never cross my threshold again.

Frumpitydoo · 11/10/2026 12:31

No gnomes or gonks.

As someone who has recently cleared a loft during a house clearance, I say THANK YOU.

lofts are junk graveyards designed to sap the very existence out of any poor bugger who has to clear them. And it’s rarely the owner.

I filled a 6 yard skip and it was both frustrating and heartbreaking.

do not store shit in your lofts people

I tend to agree. We've had to clear out the lofts of both sets of parents after they passed and it was, literally, decades of junk that should have been taken to the tip decades ago. Things that, realistically, were never going to be used again, but stored "just in case".

FormerCompositor · 11/10/2026 12:45

I'm half and half on this. Nothing whatsoever in the loft above the main house, but more than happy to store Christmas decs, Halloween etc, in the loft above the garage. I actually installed loft ladders in the garage to utilise that space! My wife won't go in either loft, so it is pretty much a one person decision anyway.

We don't have any "crap". If it's something we genuinely will need again, it gets stored properly in cupboards, the "spare" room, wardrobe or under a bed. But we live a "minimalistic" life anyway and always have done. We don't buy "crap" in the first place - just a single modest Christmas tree, no gaudy outside decorations, no Easter/Halloween crap, and only a single plastic large storage box of our son's "childhood memories" which fits snugly under a bed. Likewise, we have very few clothes, all of which fit easily into our respective wardrobes, so no excess clothing to store either. The only "clutter/crap" we have is DH's gardening/DIY stuff which is stored in cupboards and on shelves in two garden sheds. We have a couple of big suitcases which likewise "live" under beds. We've spent years scanning and digitising all our photos/videos so all now fit on a few hard drives and USB sticks, so we don't even have photo albums to store anymore either. We've never been into cheap naff home decorations nor bric-a-brac, nor cheap naff holiday souvenirs, so none of that hanging around either.

my garage rafters are used to store my long pieces of timber and drainpipe
