Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

We all eat together - visitors and family. This applied to the dc's friends and my/dh's friends - everyone eats together and 99% of the time they eat the same food - even the fussy ones.

this isn’t wierd! This is normal! Who makes visitors eat separately ? 😂

I assume they mean in lots of families, the kids (and their friends if visiting) eat earlier.

We used to have this rule, but conflicting evening schedules make it harder and harder, or result in extremely cranky children!

If the cat is on your lap you can’t move until the cat moves. Everyone wants the cat on their lap🐈‍⬛

Handy for when you're planning that special meal of mushroom wellington.

😂😂😂

Maybe all the families my kids visited were weird then, as my kids ate with their friends - separately to their parents.

I think it's different when kids are young, because these days, people often don't get home from work until later. Forty years ago, when I was growing up, my mum worked part-time from home and my dad arrived home from the office by 5.30pm latest. It's a bit of a different world now.

No outside clothes in bed

No outside clothes to wear inside the house (but myself only)

No eating in bed

No juice in the front room

No shoes inside (guests, workman etc will get shoe covers / or they can take shoes off)

Heating is only be turnt on if you already have a long sleeve and socks on and you are still cold
Heating is not going to go on if you are half naked

Curtains to be closed when indoor lights are on / when its dark outside

😲 Are you running a house or a boarding school? 😆

Takeapause · 09/10/2026 02:42

Lamps only to light all rooms expect kitchen and bathroom. Not a concrete rule, but it’s enforced.

I personally hate the main light - unless it’s dimmable, and unfortunately for my kids and family they don’t use the main light when I’m in the house.

Im sure there are others but I won’t think they are weird. The people that live with me might.

Until I joined MN I had never heard of shoes off in the house and I’m 65! None of my family or friends ever enforced this and it baffles me.

Ive read the countless threads on this and I still don’t get it. I’ve had my shoes on on all day at home and I don’t care!

I've only really come across 1 person who actually asked me to take my shoes off but I always ask now if I should remove my shoes and some people say yes. I would but wouldn't actually ask someone to unless they were muddy

Really? I mean, if I'm in a rush and have to nip back in the house for something I've forgotten then I won't take my shoes off - but only on a non carpeted floor which I know I can mop later but I would never walk on my carpet with outdoor shoes (you pick up all sorts of bacteria from outside - traces of dog shit for eg 😳)......my kids and DH however do not always abide by this rule 😡

I would expect someone to take their shoes off before walking on carpet or going upstairs - I'd think them rude if they kept their shoes on - people shouldn't need to be told.

We are a shoes off house, but I won't ask guests unless they offer.

See that makes sense. Ditto camping equipment. Basically, it's fine to keep stuff in the loft that you do use seasonally every (or almost every) year.

On the other hand, all the stuff that you no longer use should probably go. Outgrown toys, books and clothes, equipment for hobbies that you've long lost interest in, presents you never knew what to do with - don't just dump them all up there. Maybe you could keep a very small number of items for sentimental reasons, but if you don't love, say, your favourite children's books enough to make room for them in the house, then maybe they should go too.

It's a strange feeling to clear out someone else's belongings. My mum still has my aunt's qualification certificates because my aunt worked hard for them and it doesn't feel right to my mum to throw them out. But how long should we keep them for?

Edited

Oh i agree with you!! My husband has some a box of dvds, cds that he absolutely wants to keep fine but I will never keep things for the sake of it. I hate clutter wherever its in house or loft. I give a lot to charity!

I love that! I may institute that now! :)

It depends. At our home or out and about then no.

Harder at her house.

WashingQueen16 · 09/10/2026 21:07

I use our loft for xmas decorations, halloween stuff & holiday stuff (cases) & camp stuff. Things used irregularley but don't want to keep rebuying it.
Its well boxed up & packed.
No where else to store it in the main house & the garage is too damp & would need some serious work to make it usable for storage.

I used to store kids xmas presents in tge loft when they were young, until 1 year I had sweets/chocolate and we got mice moving in 🤦‍♀️ My own fault for putting food up there.
Had a big tidy out & binned a few bits.
Still have the boxes & cases but stopoed keeping xmas presents up there & the mice have moved on quickly.

We have no phones whilst you eat meals. We have teens and try to eat as a family several times a week and like to go out to eat too so no phones/screens has been around since they were young. If out we allow phones until food is served but not at the dining table at home.

Also, food is only eaten in the dining room.....kids always make a mess anywhere else - this includes snacks/chocolate. Sometimes allow simple fruit & sweets in the living room at a push but deff no food being take upstairs.

This is ours too. Fart wherever you want except near food. And if it’s in the car you must wind the window down to blast it out.

Wind the window down...

Your over 40 🤣

Studies have shown that the soles of shoes carry millions of bacteria, including fecal matter (such as E. coli), petroleum residues from asphalt, lawn pesticides, and heavy metals. Removing shoes helps prevent these pollutants from being brought inside where family members—especially crawling infants and small children—spend time sitting or playing on the floor.

Beingseenisneedy · 10/10/2026 13:45

My loft has an old washing machine, I hope it's boarded as that's coming up a bit.

Rules are, be a normal person, which basically means, use your common sense.

We haven’t even opened the loft in our new build in five years so nothing is in there - in the last house so much stuff had been put up there and forgotten about and ended up dirty and damaged , when we moved had to sort it all out and said never again.

Our loft is easily accessed so was in and out of there today. It has lighting and everything is neatly boxed up. So very glad of the storage space!

notacooldad · 10/10/2026 18:27

Big light in the living room only used in emergencies.
Not weird! Perfectly normal!
