Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

If the cat is on your lap you can’t move until the cat moves. Everyone wants the cat on their lap🐈‍⬛

That’s a rule I can get behind. 🐱

I will absolutely not allow the OH to have those disgusting synthetic sponges anywhere in the house. I have cloths and a brush for dishes and wiping, and wire wool for baked on stuff but he keeps buying the horrible synthetic ones with the rough green side to them for cleaning tools and things. They're about a quid for 20 of the damn things and I hate them. Just the sight of them annoys me and I won't touch them in order to throw them out without a stout pair of Marigolds. The feel of them just makes my skin crawl. Apart from this rather silly foible, I'm very easy going and adaptable.

Do not stack any items when clearing a table. Ever. DH loves to stack things and then unstack on the kitchen surfaces, only he has stacked things on dirty/oily plates so the underside is greasy and then spreads it all over surfaces. Or, worse, stacks a clean plate on top of something he thinks looks clean (but is greasy) and then puts the clean plate in the cupboard on top of other clean plates. Not stacking means lots of journeys from dining table to kitchen but I happily do all of those journeys.

MixedBananas · 10/10/2026 18:35

The door to the hall from the lounge must be shut at night time (DH rule) otherwise he goes nuts.
Mine is when cooking I need the door shut as I hate the smells going up to the bedrooms. 🤢🤮

Until I joined MN I had never heard of shoes off in the house and I’m 65! None of my family or friends ever enforced this and it baffles me.

Ive read the countless threads on this and I still don’t get it. I’ve had my shoes on on all day at home and I don’t care!

I’m the same age but I think I’ve been taking my shoes off indoors for a good forty years. I probably walked dog poo in one day (no one used doggy bags back then), and thought no wonder the Japanese balk at shoes indoors and stopped. It’s second nature now. Indoors = fluffy socks.

We nicked one from DH's friend when the kids were little, "always present a clean sheet" when wiping your bottom. It resulted in profligate use of loo paper. We still joke about it

@SuperGingerin our house this is called a “safety wipe”.

Growing up my mum and dad bought a lovely green patterned carpet for the living room (it was the early 90s). They loved the carpet so much that they paid for a runner to be made of the same carpet to protect said carpet. Problem was, you couldnt open the living room door with the runner so the runner had to be placed in the living room with clearance for the door to open. My mam and dad were scared of the beautiful carpet wearing out on the threshold so the only logical thing to do was to make everyone, and I mean everyone jump into the living room 😂😂 I mean leap, like Ta da I'm here!! To be fair, the carpet didn't wear out and we got really good at jumping

ITryHarder · 10/10/2026 18:55

I didn't come up with this. I bought it very cutely displayed in a gold frame 4 decades ago after my children learned to read and my husband needed a talking to. It still hangs on my wall.

House Rules

If it's open - Close it.
If it rings - Answer it.
If it's on the floor - Pick it up.
If it's dirty - Clean it.
If it's hungry - Feed it.
If it's sad - Love it.

It worked for us, but I did add.... If it's not nice - Don't say it.

You’re my kind of person! Dish brush and wire wool for me too.

I’m the opposite of a clean freak. But those sponges are Petri dishes of germs.

AddictedToBooks · 10/10/2026 19:02

Not sure if they're strange rules (well okay some are).

Shoes are not to be left lying around in the hall (sick of falling over the buggers).

Lamps on only - the big lights are only for dark mornings or afternoons.

We have a pretty table in the sitting room with our deceased daughter's framed birth certificate on with her first pair of shoes and a photo of my beloved Nanna who died when I was 16 next to it - I absolutely refuse to allow anything else to be placed on that table unless it's flowers. I know that seems really morbid and a bit odd, but luckily my DH agrees.
It's not in the middle of the room or anything, it's discreetly against a wall, but I've become a bit OCD over it.

FluffyAsEver · 10/10/2026 19:06

No sweetcorn in the house under any circumstances!

I can't think of any for my current household but my student house was my favourite.

If you flush the downstairs loo, please make sure you turn the kitchen tap off on your way past.

See if you flush the loo or run the kitchen tap the shower goes cold. My dad used to run the kitchen tap when someone was in the shower coz he thought it was funny 🤣

OP I live in the loft

DarkForces · 06/10/2026 20:12

I apply it to dh and I too. The dog gets a pass for cuteness.

Ours is similar. If it’s not nice don’t do it if it’s not nice don’t say it.

pinkdyno · 06/10/2026 20:19

Don’t cut cheese on the floor

Absolutely never put bees on your sister or anyone else.

NOTHING alive comes further than the back door without me being told

I love this. I want to live in your house !!

HettyMeg · 10/10/2026 19:22

We recently moved and the worst bit about moving was clearing the loft as we'd forgotten how much was up there. It really was a dumping ground.

Mightymuscle · 10/10/2026 19:25

Last house attic was floored and 35 years of all the "need to keep" stuff. On moving family were summoned to go through boxes of their stuff eg childhood, Uni, sports. On our move only suitcases allowed in new loft. On his death I took those out as very big and I knew would never use them. What goes in a loft is mostly forgotten.

OneGoldUser · 10/10/2026 19:33

Not now but my parents house had one. After laying a gorgeous real wood floor my dad’s golden rule was “no heels on the wood”. My sisters & I could roll in at all times of the night as young women, falling over drunk but if my dad heard one click clack stiletto on the wood floor he’d be livid. I can see why, one of us, we’ve never admitted who, went out, came in starving, raided the fridge & left little heel dents in the floor from the door to the fridge, where the metal heel was coming through the plastic tip. Heads rolled!

mybiggreenfrog · 10/10/2026 19:46

Where do you put your Christmas decorations?

Lapsang · 10/10/2026 19:47

Late to this but mine is nothing gets put on the kitchen island that isn't food or a kitchen item. Stops it becoming a general dumping ground or getting germs from handbags etc.

Family get annoyed with me policing it but it's one rule I'm sticking to!

I like your loft rule. I am getting a skip for mine next Easter (my son in law & grandson are going to clear it). All that’s going back up is suitcases, 2 fans & a few Xmas decorations - nothing else.

I don’t think it's weird having two food waste bins since you can’t compost cooked stuff/meat/gravy. If you want to compost stuff and you have food waste collection then there has to be some separation.

Our council collects cooked and raw food all in the same bag, which we put in the garden waste bin 🤷‍♀️

rebax · 10/10/2026 20:19

No toes on the table.

Aimed at cats but also applied to humans.

Unfortunately the cats have good lawyers and sit on newspapers.😀

101Alsatians · 10/10/2026 20:45

Obviously not a rule that ever existed when they were little 🤣But now at 10 and 14..

Youngest/smallest/most vulnerable eat first.

So kids feed their guinea pigs (again lol) before dinner.

Kids and I feed the dogs/cat next.

Dishing up,kids are always plated first before the adults.

More of a habit now than a rule tbh.

At family events, brothers/uncles etc. insist on ladies first. Not in a small/vulnerable way as above with kids and animals way ofc. Just manners.

Agree with PP - no nipples at the table.

Weirdest! No polystyrene in the house where possible, freaks me out.

Last one - no killing spiders, though I am terrified of them. Call for someone better equipped to put them outside 🤣

mybiggreenfrog · 10/10/2026 19:46

Where do you put your Christmas decorations?

I'm not the OP, but have nothing in my loft or garage. Christmas decorations are in lidded boxes at the back of the under stairs cupboard (my cupboard is long and narrow, as it runs the length of the stairs).

We only have one household rule... don't be a dick. Seems to cover every scenario we've come up against so far.

Yeah but is that

“don’t be a dick and put stuff in the attic”

or

”don’t be a dick and demand nobody puts stuff in the attic”

?
