Have you ever had a celebrity encounter or near miss?

Have you ever had any celebrity encounters or near misses? There's a radio DJ who I snogged years ago and shouldn't have. He was far too principled to take it further and I really admired that, funnily enough though I was upset. He's still on the radio now and I think about it a fair bit if I hear him.

I've just remembered when I was a little kid my dad was taking me to the Natural history museum & we saw Tom Baker in South Kensington weaving up the road drunk & calling out random nonsense. My Dad shouted "shut up you stupid c*nt"! I was very embarrassed and told dad off; " Shhhhsh, Da...aad! That's DR.WHO"! Dad muttered; "Never mind about that, he's a stupid effin' b is what he is"! Tom Baker seemed oblivious to it all.

Similar with Alex Higgins reeling around the street when I was with my mum and grandma. It was a scary thing to see in the early afternoon.

Some great posts. This thread has given me some laughs and also made me think back too.

I have a couple of controversial ones...
My kids went to school with Katie Hopkins kids, she is actually really lovely and her kids were too.
Met Saville and thought he was rude n creepy.

Best one was working for Alan Ahlberg ( children's author) he was the nicest, humblest man ever. He and his wife came to my wedding. I was so sad when he died recently.

Others.. Colin Jackson in Bath , he was training while my son did sports clubs. I was in a club and the Olympic swimmers Paul Palmer and Mark Foster were there, their shoulders were massive! I tried to squeeze past to brush up against them 😆

I worked in a Bath hotel when the east enders cast were doing panto. I went to clean a room and Phil Mitchell was still in bed. And Barbara Windsor wasn't there so they let me take home a huge bouquet of flowers that had been left for her.

My son met and has photos with Andy from cbbc and the Fonz!! I'm so jealous of that one. The Fonz is really small too.
I know many more too!

Mark Foster lived in my town, not sure if he still does, I once ran into him with my daughter in her pram in our local co op! He was lovely and I was very apologetic!

Alex Higgins shouted, ‘Do you know who I am?!’ at me when I asked him politely to wait his turn at the bar I was working at. There were several customers in front of him and he was rudely shouting his order at me. The bouncer asked him to keep it respectful 😂.

Honor Blackman sat on my lap a the theatre in London thinking my seat was empty. She was lovely. I went to school with Tony Hadley, in my year, part of the gang and lived in the same street in Islington. Worked with Gillian Taylforth when she was just breaking into acting, a solicitors in London that my dad managed and he got me summer work there. Met the 1971 Arsenal football team at Islington town hall when they did the double, my dad was on the council. My mum told Frank McClintock (the captain) the FA cup looked like a bit of old tin. Used to have coffee in Dulwich with the woman who allegedly had an affair with Ian Botham in the 1980s, Lindy Field. She insisted it was true! Catweasle was a client of the solicitors I went on to work in, as was David James, England goalkeeper, who my boss had no idea who he was !
I am sure there is more, but that's it for now !

"Used to have coffee in Dulwich with the woman who allegedly had an affair with Ian Botham in the 1980s" 😂😂😂😮‍💨 - wins a prize as my most obscure celebrity encounter on the thread. Excellent!!

Do you remember Des Barnes from Coronation Street circa 1996? Because I confused him for my husband from behind on platform 7 (I remember it vividly) Bristol Temple Meads.
As a joke I rolled up a newspaper and shouted through the middle like a loudspeaker 'the train has landed stumpy' and Des turned round and said 'please I've been working all week all I want to do is enjoy my day off'. And then I had to explain I thought he was my husband but I couldn't get the words out and I called him ken Barlow.

This made me laugh so much

I still want to know why she addresses her husband as ‘Stumpy’, regardless of who it was she was actually shouting through a rolled-up newspaper at!

the80sweregreat · 14/10/2026 15:04

‘Stumpy’ is probably a nickname of some kind.

Well, I assumed so, but while I can imagine it being some lads group nickname from his schooldays or something, it's tougher to imagine being in an intimate relationship with someone who addresses you by a name that's a bit like 'Fatso' or 'Baldy'...?

Though this does not spoil the comedy of her roaring it through a rolled-up newspaper at Bristol Temple Meads at a man whose character was involved in a love triangle with Raquel Wolstenhulme and Curly Watts. Grin

I read a book where one of the characters was called Bonkers. His wife made out he was hot stuff in bed.

I worked on a hospital reception desk and there was a big hoo hah.. looked over and jimmy saville was coming in with a giant dalek. Makes me shiver thinking about it now. He was headed for the children’s ward.

Lucky escape. I wrote to Jim'll Fixit, still gives me the willies.

I always think I'd get along with Ricky Gervais! 🤷😂

I have quite often seen him on Hampstead Heath - he is always really pleasant and really nice to my dog!

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 21/10/2026 21:57

I used to go to school with 'hunter' from the 90's gladiators

He was in year 11 as I started

Nice enough chap-hated all sports (especially rugby) and was crap at maths apparently

My ex's sister met him through work. She spoke well of him: polite, friendly, and with zero 'ego' 👍🏾
