Have you ever had a celebrity encounter or near miss?

Have you ever had any celebrity encounters or near misses? There's a radio DJ who I snogged years ago and shouldn't have. He was far too principled to take it further and I really admired that, funnily enough though I was upset. He's still on the radio now and I think about it a fair bit if I hear him.

Rory McGrath bought me a drink in a pub in Norwich and told me I was pretty

I also met The Goodies and got Bill Oddie's autograph while they were filming in Lyme Regis in the 70s.
I lost his autograph tho 😔

I would see Barbara Windsor around Marylebone quite frequently she was always so friendly to people stopping her a lovely woman.

I worked at MTV as a student so would regularly see celebrities passing through. I would then see them out of context on the street and be really confused about where I knew them from. Unbeknown to me Madness was one of those, I was in Dublin Castle one mid week evening and stood next to a man, kept double taking him thinking he was one of my lecturers, decided he was my philosophy lecturer and launched into a chat about that only for it to dawn who he was. He took it very gracious in rebuking me.

I have quite a few stories around this era but actually being damaged by a celebrity Amanda Holden opened a cab door onto me and rather than acknowledge that carried on shouting at Les Denis. My bag ended up caught on the cab trying to get past them and I dropped it on the floor. He helped me pick up my things and was very apologetic, she just stood there in my way. Not the person she appears to be now

I actually am not surprised at this as for dome reason Ive never liked her. I have a friend who has had "dealings" with her and they cannot stand her 😬

Sometime in the late 90s I was at a local Thai restaurant in Horsham with my boyfriend & another couple and I started to feel really unwell. The DJ Carl Cox was on the next table and was really concerned. When he left the restaurant I was standing outside getting some air and he stopped to enquire how I was doing. Didn’t realise who he was initially but restaurant staff told me as he was always in. Apparently he lived in Horsham at the time.

Bit of a z lister but met Luisa omielan after a gig and she was actually really rude. She complains a lot about not being as famous as she should be and I wonder is it because she’s like that with everyone.

In a local coffee shop met Toyah Wilcox and her husband Robert Fripp. He is a very quiet, lovely gentleman, they were both chatty and friendly. Whilst holidaying in the US was coming out of a bank when a motorcycle roared up and parked. Woman got off and it wasnt until we were back in our car I realised it was Cher 🫣 Also bumped into Roy Wood in a club some years ago when he lived fairly local.

A couple of years ago I was walking down Carnaby Street and this man was walking straight towards me. I knew I knew him but couldn't place where from. He brushed past me and then I realised it was Russell Brand. His wife was literally hanging off his arm as he was striding down the street.

What's happened about him ? Is he being prosecuted or what ?

He is a right old creep (no offence to you!). I have a friend who was working on a project he was involved in and it is well known that he is always perving after women, especially young women. He was creeping around her and she was warned to keep her distance by other colleagues of both sexes.

Years ago on a work trip we stayed at a hotel with the Williams formula 1 team and I had a "very" cosy evening chatting with a cute mechanic. I knew nothing about Formula 1 so when I back to work was telling the story and my colleague looked up pics of people who might have been there to see if I'd seen anyone. Turned out I'd been mad flirting with Jacques Villeneuve who was world champion at the time and going out with Danni Minogue. I still cringe when thinking about it. He was very lovely though.

This is probably for the oldies among you....my mother ran a rather lovely antique, jewellery and gift shop which was within walking distance of (at the time) a large new luxury hotel. Visiting performers who stayed there would often have a wander around the locality during the day, before their evening shows.

So I met Nana Mouskouri and her husband George Petsilas, (they bought a huge Chippendale cabinet they had shipped over to Switzerland) Lovelace Watkins, Dave Allen and a couple of RC cardinals who were staying there for a big religious conference. Also we had several local "celebrities" who shopped with her for Christmas and birthday presents, including Peter Stringfellow, Dave Berry, Bobby Knutt and Herol "Bomber" Graham.

I also had the misfortune to sit next to Lulu and her entourage at a big city centre hotel at dinner one evening. So loud and irritating, like being next to a flock of shrieking hens.

My partner was at a wedding where Lulu was a guest. It was one of her relatives getting married. He said she was quiet, respectful and kept a low profile, not upstaging anyone in the main wedding party. He daid you would hsrdly have known she was there.

Quite a few, when I was a kid we used to go to a famous fish restaurant, which was opposite a major theatre. Saw a lot of famous people at the time but can barely remember who now!
The ones I do are -

  1. Mid 80s, living in a Lincolnshire village in the arse end of nowhere, a sports car pulled up on the main road. The chap asked me for directions, which I gave him. I knew I'd seen and heard his voice before, but no idea where! Tried to describe him to my mum, but neither of us had a clue! Later that week he appeared on tv and it was Derek Jacobi! He was lovely and very thankful.
  2. Mid 80s, in the car driving through Leeds and my dad nearly drove over Marc Almond! I was starstruck and told dad who he was, his reply was "never heard of him, but he shouldn't be walking across the road when it's my right of way"!!! 🤣
  3. Late 80s, late meeting someone, so I was running out of Leeds Train Station and saw a bloke coming towards me, who I recognised and thought it was a neighbour. I quickly stopped and asked how he was etc, which he answered and asked me the same. I then apologised and said I was late and I'd see him later. He said no problem, take care. I ran round the corner and realised it was James Bolam, of The Likely Lads fame! (Among other programmes obviously!).
  4. Mid 90s, spent evenings drinking with most of the Emmerdale cast in our local, when the studios moved opposite. Had some good nights and none of them were up themselves.
  5. Passed Leah Bracknells (RIP) little girl a comic in Asda as neither of them could reach it. (She played Zoe Tate in Emmerdale).
  6. My mum worked as a telephonist for a huge provider in the 90s and a call came through from David Frost wanting to speak to someone at ITV. He started shouting and swearing as soon as he was put through, before my mum had had chance to clear her end of the call! Not a nice man, although I never liked him anyway. She also chatted all the way home with Josh from Casualty on the Harrogate train one evening.
  7. Early 2000s Jeff Hordley and Emma Atkins (Cain and Charity Dingle, Emmerdale) house shared opposite our house. Emma had blocked my car in one day and I needed to get to work. My husbands Harley was parked behind and I had about an inch to move front and back! I went to knock on their door and Jeff answered, she'd gone put and he couldn't find the car keys. He came over to see if he could help so I said I'd go get the bike lock keys, as it was heavy and wouldn't move with the lock on. If he could move it back for me, I'd be able to get out. By the time I'd got back, a minute and a half if that, he'd managed to move it! Then he said he'd wait while I locked up the house and guide me out of my space! Which he did, bless him, he was lovely and apologetic!
  8. Walked past Goldie Looking Chain in the city centre, mid 2000s.

Oh and Jimmy So-vile asked me and my mate and our two elderly residents, when I worked at a residential home, if we all wanted a bunk up afterhhe'd finished his fun run round the park, that we'd gone out to watch! The home was next to the park and he hopped the low wall and came and put his arms round us! Grim but worth a mention! 🤣🤮

Mine are mostly Emmerdale based! 🤣

Also my partners parents adopted Kenny Everett’s donkey

I think this has to win, whatever the contest is. It's like "Freddie Star ate my hamster" in reverse.

Another one I forgot to add earlier, back to the early 80’s and I was coming home with my then bf from a night out, we walked past the local train station and it was all highly lit up with floodlight type lights. We stopped to see what was going on and it was a band recording a video. We approached this young guy standing around and he told us it was a pop video. I asked him who he was and it was Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode and they were filming the video for ‘See You’ which got to number 6 in the charts.

What next? Ozzie Osborne ate my pet bat, Andrew? Alan Rickman dissed my owl Barry on the Harry Potter set?

I was in a hotel in the North for work and there was apparently a footy team staying there pre a match the next day. I’m not into football really so wasn’t hugely interested but it was a bit buzzy among hotel guests. Anyway next morning I got up and went out to get in my car to drive to the venue and found my windscreen had been smashed overnight. I was so angry I belted back into the hotel like a bloody tornado and practically smashed the door into someone’s face (Just didn’t see them at all through my rage). It was Alan Shearer I’d taken out my temper on. Ooops.

ToffeePennie · 04/10/2026 21:35

Another one: my brother and I were on a beach in Portugal. My brother starts talking to this lady on the table next to us, who invites my family to join hers because of the “cute boy” (aka my bro) she buys our lunch and we talk for hours. It was only after we got back to our villa that my mum realised it was Anna Ryder Richardson off changing rooms. Lovely lady!

This was a VERY long time ago, (over 45 years) when she was pretty raw and loud, and the whole group were pretty well-oiled!!

StockingsByTheFire · 04/10/2026 22:09

I dated a billionaire for a while.

Random things include Lindsay Lohan buying me a birthday cake in Mykonos, then shagging my mate loudly elsewhere in our villa. Another time playing limbo, pissed with Uma Thurman and the bloke she was with at the time, Arki something. Bill Gates sang me happy birthday once too. We were at some blokes wedding and some Victoria Secrets types were there. Victoria Silvedst was one of the older ones and her figure is insane. Philip and Tina Green were there as well, both self appreciating dickheads. Met Wills and Kate at the Ark Gala. Nice people.

No one ever believes me, I never took pictures, it's not the done thing. I do text Lindsay Merry Christmas every year though, and she still always replies back. Not even DH knows that lol, he's not a fan of hearing about the "billionaire" years.

Not me but my cousin was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society at the same time as Elon Musk. She said he arrived late, left early and didn’t appear to give a shit.

I’ve met loads of comedians at stage doors, but one of my favs was Lee Evans on his final tour. It was a warm-up gig in Ipswich and a small group of us (I was with my sister) were let in the car park to meet him after. He was so softly spoken, so gentle and seemed amazed anyone wanted to meet him. It was dark and he asked to look at our pic before we left to make sure we were both happy with it! The light was dim but it was a good pic, he giggled and said it looked like he had a tan.

We used to see Leslie Crowther often shopping in the Greengrocers in Keynsham before he had a big traffic accident.

Oh I forgot I helped out at a "celeb" bootcamp for a while too:

Darren Day - bit sad, desperate to appear famous
Gemma Collins - utter twat, lazy and sly
Sophie Anderton - so pretty, highly strung
The guy who played Warren on Hollyoaks, Jamie something? - huge, really tall, nice chatty chap

Then at Center Parcs my mother, after whispering "is that him, that one" repeatedly and loud enough to be heard in a helicopter, prompted said individual to turn round and confirm he was indeed "Stuart from EastEnders".
