The problem was that she was reading the room, but it was the conference room.

People are struggling all over the country and she is going on about £100k wages and £1m houses IHT

And an iron dome that doesn't cover the whole country

Yes, preaching to the depleted choir rather than using it as a platform to increase the congregation.
The dome isn't meant to cover the country, silly. Its not a lid. It's a...thing. a thingy thing that does things that are important things. In a mobile way. So its mobile thing. And its going to cost £10 billion so its a funding defence mibile thing. I'm all for it myself after kemi explained.

Is that predicated on fuel prices and the knock on effect on food and other commodities?

I can't get past the paywall but I think that is the gist of it,

She’s between a rock and a hard place because she also needs to win back the tactical Home Counties voters from the Libdems.

Which is quite an overlap with Remainers

There was a certain amount of non barking dogs, I feel.

Matt Green: The Tories Want an Iron Dome?

Does that make the suggestion the Iron Dome is to stop people leaving ? (cf. Hadrians wall)

I wonder if that study will be used to prove that people won't vote Tory because they are mentally ill ? Which is an amusing volte-face on the traditional insult.

Now this is an idea from the Greens I’d like to see every council get behind.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/oct/08/free-land-build-lewisham-council-london-social-housing-problem

It would upend at least two millennia of accepted practice, so will never happen.

The last chance for shenanigans like this was 1066. And the Normans nailed it.

Karistyleaftea · 08/10/2026 14:19

Well it looks like KB has said it out loud now, the Tory party is for rich people.
And only rich people, in my opinion.

Anyone read The Dome by Stephen King?

BIossomtoes · 08/10/2026 14:19

I thought the last time was 1945-50. It looks like something Attlee would have been all over. I bet Burnham would go for it.

PickAChew · 08/10/2026 14:20

Ben Houchen likes selling land to his mates for peanuts but there isn't much to show for it.

This isn't the unclaimed west. It's England. All land is owned by someone. Even if it's "public" it's under the auspices of "the crown".

(And actually, the US has the same notion - all land is ultimately the gift of congress. And don't you forget it). The magic phrase there (to avoid the truth that they were perpetuating the feudal system) is "eminent domain". How else could they claim land that was already owned by the first peoples ?

There's common land where I live. Parking is free. Despite it being concreted over the right to bring sheep there, herbage, still stands.

It appears that the land in this instance is council owned.

If a local authority is selling a site worth £2m or less, the council can choose to sell it to whomever it likes, and at whatever price it pleases, even giving it away for free, provided doing so provides positive benefits for the area.

As previously noted in the gov.uk page, there is no land in England and Wales that is not owned by someone (companies being legal entities for the purposes of owning land).

DuncinToffee · 08/10/2026 16:03

When I studied in Germany, this was quite a common thing to do there, buy land and build your own house.

The council is ‘somebody’. They can give their own land away if they choose to.

Oh quite.

I was just amused at any notion there is somehow land that isn't "owned" by someone.

"And how did you get that then ? By oppressing the masses ....."
