Kemi isn't as clever as she sounds.

I think that sums it’s up.

she can talk really well, like Farage can. Can sound highly intelligent and convincing.

Until she’s asked a question off script and the edge and tone changes and I don’t think she sounds like a nice person as a general rule of personality.

And Boring Johnson has what to do with this exactly? He wasn't at the conference. Neither was John Major.

Partially Irish? Seriously that's a huge red flag. And you know that.

Why is partially Irish a red flag? Genuinely not trying to argue or play wide eyed innocence. I'm just not sure why... It's true. But I live in England, was born in England, speak with an English accent and call myself English. I also know for a fact that I have Irish "heritage" as the Americans would call it. If I can be English, or if someone born in Manchester with an Irish parent and a Scottish parent why can't Kemi?

My point about Johnson is he was born in America and had an American passport. If he wanted to describe himself as American then fair dos. If he doesn't consider himself American then that's also absolutely fine. I'm just not certain why that would apply to him but not to someone like Kemo Badenoch unless there is another reason....

Fine.

It's been a lovely day today out in my English garden. Pretty maids all in a row.

Just so long as you don't have roses. They are Italian after all.

The Tudor dynasty was English and Welsh.

A rambling rose am I myself.

Well, there was a bit of French Norman in there as well. But William I is described as the first English king so I guess that makes his descendants English too. If "pure blood" is important to Englishness then quite quickly you run out of English people.

There is nationality (Nigerian, British, American etc) and people can and do have dual nationality and people are also allowed to give up their passports and refer to themselves as only British or only Nigerian. I don't agree with Kemi on much but it does seem unfair to castigate her for wanting to lean into her British nationality and her Yoruban heritage rather than her Nigerian nationality..If your arguement is to do with Nigerian as an ethnicity rather than a nationality than that's even odder because few Nigerians would describe Nigerian is an ethnicity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_Nigeria. It's a beautiful country (with borders formed through coloniism with all the nuance that entails) that you can give up citizenship of if you wish. It's not automatically sus.

I have the lurgy so I might be especially grumpy.

But urgh. Hate how Reform/Restore pull grubby ethnonationalism levers and the media fall in behind. Our news cycles dominated by populist BS, giving it credibility in miles of column inches. Social media boosting it further.

Yes, well done Badenoch for finally coming out with it. It shouldn’t have needed saying - a plague on both their houses - but you got there in the end.

I don’t care what someone calls themselves. Identify how you like, pay your tax and don’t break the law. I want to hear about social care, investment in our justice system (that not just prison, you idiots), water companies, energy etc. Stuff that impacts the day to day.

is that it now? The conference season is done? I hope so. Sod off back to Parliament and get some work done.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/10/2026 22:55

Much of the speech was the same old Tory shit. Help the rich, and then help them some more.

But I was very pleased to hear her comments on the Englishness issue. She looked like she meant it, and as the parent of a mixed race child myself, I'm absolutely with her on that particular issue.

I also think the idea of reducing employer NI contributions for young people is quite a good one.

Efacsen · 07/10/2026 23:00

Hope you feel better soon @Notonthestairs Flowers

Think they're all 'back to work' this coming Monday

Yeah I am sorry for going of on a rant earlier on this thread.
But it's quite close to my heart for similar reasons. It is quite a useful line in the sand to draw and I'm glad she did.

I believe that she was sincere on that issue, and not just trying to score points against Reform.

My dd has felt increasingly alienated by all of the ethnonationalist shit in recent years, and it's good to see another mainstream party explicitly distancing themselves from it. I will never be won over to Tory values, but at least what Kemi presented today were predominantly Tory values and not the Farage Lite that we've sometimes seen from her before.

ilovesooty · 07/10/2026 16:00

It's a lie anyway. She's good at lies.

She is.
On reflection, I think she was speaking with the Conservative conceit that they are the default party for our centre right, small c conservative nation, who occasionally throw their dummy out of the pram and vote Labour as a collective tantrum. But that this is a mere bump in the road, before we see sense and come back to mummy.
I think this shows a shocking lack of insight into where we are. Because it disregards that she has lost a huge chunk of the working class right, who are rejecting mummy for the percieved rebels, and voting Reform.
She will need a lot more than a few populist gestures targeting immigration and 'idle' benefits claimants to bring them home, and she has nothing there that will improve their lives.
Of course, neither do Reform. But they have the advantage of not yet having failed.

BIossomtoes · 08/10/2026 08:45

I thought the line about the government making “everyone in this room” poorer was inadvertently very telling. It’s an open admission that it’s now a party for the wealthy and I’m surprised none of the commentators have picked it up.

Exactly. Along with the fact that one of her flagship policies is free childcare for mums earning £100k and over. It’s so obvious that she’s only concerned about the wealthy.

She’s never going to gain enough votes to win a general election that way, though.

Staggeringly poor at reading the room. She is way too focused on a demographic she probably already has in the bag. When she needs to be looking at those she needs to win back from Reform.

DuncinToffee · 08/10/2026 09:15

The problem was that she was reading the room, but it was the conference room.

People are struggling all over the country and she is going on about £100k wages and £1m houses IHT

And an iron dome that doesn't cover the whole country

She’s between a rock and a hard place because she also needs to win back the tactical Home Counties voters from the Libdems.

Is that predicated on fuel prices and the knock on effect on food and other commodities?
