It's been condemned by most of the Green MPs I think? Polanski wasn't there from what I gather. I think he is on borrowed time. He won't win Holborn and St Pancras.

I think you’re right there. It’s not likely that he’ll win there, considering that the Green Party poll ratings have gone down thanks to the Burnham bounce.

DuncinToffee · 04/10/2026 16:43

The Green Party have really messed up with this motion imo

That would make for an interesting thread. Why don't you start one?

Excellent idea.

That Green Party motion passed by 1022 votes to 830.

It will most likely be investigated by the ECHR as they did with Labour.

The fact that it was passed means it is now official party policy, though.

And yes, it was condemned by 4 of the party’s 5 MPs as well as Caroline Lucas, the Greens' first MP.

How will that work out, I wonder.

Oh, and Polanski decided that campaigning for the by-election was more important on this particular day, remarkably.

I think they will lose voters.

I think they will lose voters.

I agree that they will. And rightly so. It's not going to be the right benefiting from that loss, however.
The sooner Polanski goes, the better.

Their MPs (rightly IMV) came out against it and yet it was pursued anyway.
The Greens don’t have a central authority so whatever gets voted in at conference becomes policy. Agree Polanski is likely to be replaced.

BIossomtoes · 04/10/2026 16:52

I listened to Friday’s edition of the News Agents recorded at the Greens conference. It was risible, God knows who’d vote for them now.

Couldn't agree more Duncin. And this will lose them support, as you say. It is extreme IMHO.

BestIsWest · 04/10/2026 16:53

The Newsagents at the Greens conference was interesting. The first few people they interviewed were quite open about liking Labour’s more progressive stance under Andy Burnham. Then I totally failed to follow the logic from the guy they interviewed on the racism motion.

Agreed. It was farcical.

TemperanceWest · 04/10/2026 16:56

I think the Greens have basically just destroyed all the political progress they have made. I am bloody disappointed in Mothin Ali.

countrygirl99 · 04/10/2026 16:59

Yes, real own goal for the greens. I wouldn't have voted for their candidate here in the last 2 elections even if I liked their policies but I've been really disappointed in them lately. I'd hoped they might be a useful pressure point but they are totally self destructing.

placemats · 04/10/2026 16:59

There seems to be very little organisation top down or bottom up within the Green Party. Journalists were not allowed into the debate and vote.

Care little for FWR @Chersfrozenface as it solely deals with men in dresses now in the most derogatory way. It has little relevance to any woman's life.

Second that.

Have always thought that those who now support the Green Party are disaffected Tories.

I expect they really miss Caroline Lucas. I never voted Green (though family members have done so), but I liked her a lot.

I have a lot of respect for her.

placemats · 04/10/2026 17:11

Caroline Lucas speaks sense.

ilovesooty · 04/10/2026 17:11

I think Caroline Lucas was brilliant. No time for Polanski or Ali.

18-21 year olds

SerendipityJane · 04/10/2026 18:06

I've probably voted Green at somepoint - to keep a less desirable candidate out.

But going back to the 1980s, I wasn't really interested as their grasp of science was ... well they didn't have one beyond "science is bad".

cardibach · 04/10/2026 18:07

I’ve never liked Polanski. Self confessed populist. Populism is the problem, not the solution.
@Badvocthebad all of them? Really? I have more faith in most young people.
