A bit morbid I know, sorry!
have you given this much thought? I know it sometimes pops into my head when I hear a song that moves me.

mine would be Blessings, by Hollow Coves. I think joyful and mellow. i love the lyrics

what’s yours?!
funny / sad / uplifting / depressing / dance anthem?

Dreams (Cranberries), Who Knows Where the Time Goes? (Fairport Convention) and Champagne Supernova (Oasis).

Edited

I went to a funeral where they played Who Knows Where the Time Goes? and it destroyed me (in a good way, though, IYSWIM!)

Appreciate this may not be in the spirit of the thread - but I wouldn't. I'm definitely going to let my DC do my funeral. I've been to a couple of funerals recently where the dead person pre-chose lots of aspects of their own funeral and I'm not convinced that it is a good idea.

A funeral is the opportunity for the living to grieve the dead. If it is all pre-arranged by the now dead person, then that is not what happens - in my opinion. So, I'm going to let my DC choose whatever they think I would like. If their choices are horrific, I won't know! But I presume it will bring them some kind of relief / satisfaction / pleasure to have chosen them for me.

Conversely, I’ve just seen the pain of a bereaved wife who lost her DH far too young and unexpectedly. The DC are too young to be involved. On top of her grief, she has the torment of not knowing what kind of funeral her DH would want, let alone what music.
Please make sure your loved ones know your wishes - even if that is ‘I want you to choose the music’ - give them time to think about it before they are consumed by grief.

Yes, I think people expect to cry so it's ok to have reflective/sad songs, but try to finish with an uplifting one. At my mum's we walked in to The Pearl Fisher's duet which she loved, the photos were shown to Thank You For the Music, and we walked out of the service to Theme From A Summer Place.

Fields of gold. The acoustic Eva Cassidy version.
Was played at many family funerals over the past 2 years. A "family favourite ".

None, I’ll be having a direct cremation.

Thingamebobwotsit · 29/09/2026 18:06

Cremation: Firestarter by The Prodigy.

And if the family want more, a playlist of tracks along a similar very irreverent theme. If people don't dance I will haunt them in the next life 😆

Meet on the Ledge - Fairport Convention

I was at a funeral last week and the lovely singer sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
It was utterly beautiful.
The deceased had lost her adult son in an accident just a few years previously which had obviously devastated the family.

AcquadiP · 29/09/2026 18:10

Ray Charles cover of Let It Be - it's a soul/gospel version.

My lovely friend wrote her own eulogy and it was brilliant. It was less serious than if a family member had written it, spoke directly to each of her children and grandchildren and many others.

I love that idea!

Occurs to me that I don't think anyone in my life actually knows that so I should tell them!

I agree. Clhoose readings and songs you like and add that they can change or add anything they want. There's so much to do when someone dies.

Clude · 29/09/2026 18:47

I won't have any songs, and no funeral at all. A direct cremation.
