Knock on wood.

Alleycat321 · 29/09/2026 13:21

White Horses, Circle of Life, Somewhere and Do You Hear the People Sing.

Written my Eulogy, chosen the Photos for the Order of Service, chosen the Wake Venue and the food I want to be served.

Don’t want other people choosing for me (and getting it wrong).

I'm most definitely not having a funeral, but this is a diverting idea for a couple of minutes 😂
Either "You Got A Friend" sung by James Taylor or go full hardcore "death vibe" with the Dies Irae from Mozart's Requiem!

SleeplessRoads · 29/09/2026 13:22

Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World. It’s also the inspo for my username!

Appreciate this may not be in the spirit of the thread - but I wouldn't. I'm definitely going to let my DC do my funeral. I've been to a couple of funerals recently where the dead person pre-chose lots of aspects of their own funeral and I'm not convinced that it is a good idea.

A funeral is the opportunity for the living to grieve the dead. If it is all pre-arranged by the now dead person, then that is not what happens - in my opinion. So, I'm going to let my DC choose whatever they think I would like. If their choices are horrific, I won't know! But I presume it will bring them some kind of relief / satisfaction / pleasure to have chosen them for me.

My mum planned her funeral to the letter. Not only was it a great help to me and my sister because we would have struggled, the whole thing was just "mum". Every choice of music reminded us of shared history and the pictures she chose illustrated her life. We were extremely grateful that she had done it. Sadly the funeral wasn't the big send off it should have been because of covid.

I think what's different now is that people listen to music privately. When I was a child there were no headphones and not much choice of music so we heard mum's record collection rather more than we might have chosen!

I actually have a top five list which I would choose for my funeral though it's not labelled as such on my Spotify.
Dance me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen
You Can Sleep while I Drive by Melissa Etheridge
Thunder Road duet Bruce Springsteen and Melissa Etheridge
Free Falling Stevie Nicks
Chandelier by Sia

My lovely friend wrote her own eulogy and it was brilliant. It was less serious than if a family member had written it, spoke directly to each of her children and grandchildren and many others.

I agree with @MargoLivebetter

I don't care what music is played - I won't be there to listen to it.

If I even have a funeral (as opposed to direct cremation) then it will be for the living. I am happy that my DH - if still around - and/or my children will make good decisions. Any sort of funeral/memorial will be for them, not me. They should do what feels right for them.

So long, farewell, auf widersehen, goodbye....

Me too!!

NewAgain26 · 29/09/2026 13:32

I'd pick

Sound of Silence - Disturbed version

Alice - Avril Lavigne (it's been an anthem of mine for a good few years so very "me")

Tarkan · 29/09/2026 13:32

I have a whole playlist, I’d rather people enjoyed music than listened to someone droning on for a while.

However my sense of humour is a bit twisted so songs include things like Alkaline Trio’s “You’re Dead”, Yungblud’s songs “The Funeral” and “Zombie” and Ash’s “Burn Baby Burn”. People are in for quite a treat. 🤣

Rfriendselectric · 29/09/2026 13:36

The Golden Girls theme song, Thank You For Being A Friend!

MsJinks · 29/09/2026 13:37

I really struggled to know what my Dad would want for his funeral - my Mum couldn’t and wouldn’t engage - I felt I was trying to get it right for both of them and I was failing, and it was really hard - I found later I could have got bits wrong too.

Mine change but currently
Birds- imagine dragons to go in- as I chose it for my Dad and it speaks to me still

Bruce Springsteen - not sure which maybe Friends - as his music was around at significant parts of my life plus I’ve shared concerts with kids and passed my music love down to my granddaughter

Out to I can’t recall but a dance at one daughter’s wedding I had with granddaughter - fun and dancy and great family memories - one has the dire video of me jumping around so could lighten things later at whatever celebration they have lol

The Lachrymosa from Mozart’s Requiem
The Ship Song, Nick Cave

There are more, but they change. These are my core ones.

I can understand that but my take is that my dad’s music, that he chose, was his last chance to speak to me after he had gone. One of the songs he picked is what I listen to when I need to hear his “voice”. If I had picked it I wouldn’t have that. So I can see both sides of that.

Cookingdoesntgettougher · 29/09/2026 13:47

Mine would be religious if there is a funeral as not sure anyone to do it (single, no children).

i had a relative die too young- they left suggestions regarding afterwards, but then “or whatever would comfort my mother” so permission to keep all of it or change.

Be still my Soul by Alfie Boe.

BigMartin · 29/09/2026 15:20

This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven. If I could get the lyrics printed in the order of service for everyone to sing along, that would be even better.

Ive already told my lot that they can do as they like but please make room for ‘Come Sail Away’ by Styx and one for the final curtain ‘Last Dance’ by Donna Summer.
