A bit morbid I know, sorry!
have you given this much thought? I know it sometimes pops into my head when I hear a song that moves me.

mine would be Blessings, by Hollow Coves. I think joyful and mellow. i love the lyrics

what’s yours?!
funny / sad / uplifting / depressing / dance anthem?

As a musicals fan I want 'For Good' from Wicked. I think the lyrics would be quite fitting for a funeral.

Appreciate this may not be in the spirit of the thread - but I wouldn't. I'm definitely going to let my DC do my funeral. I've been to a couple of funerals recently where the dead person pre-chose lots of aspects of their own funeral and I'm not convinced that it is a good idea.

A funeral is the opportunity for the living to grieve the dead. If it is all pre-arranged by the now dead person, then that is not what happens - in my opinion. So, I'm going to let my DC choose whatever they think I would like. If their choices are horrific, I won't know! But I presume it will bring them some kind of relief / satisfaction / pleasure to have chosen them for me.

We buried dad last year. Please discuss your wishes with your kids, and plan the funeral together. It was stressful dealing with everything including funeral planning and your grief after death. Get a list of your accounts together, plan the songs you want, make sure they know about your life. They will be asked to make a lot of decisions in a short space of time, the more you can prempt that the better.

Where Angels Sing by Meatloaf.

Champagne Supernova
Enigma -Return to Innocence
Un bel di vedremo - aria from Madama Butterfly (I’ve never been performative and over the top in life so may be fun to do so at the end and it is a beautiful piece)

I would always choose the hymn Abide with Me. Beautiful and moving. If just a song, then Thank you for the Days by Ray Davies and Kinks.

Every Grain of Sand, Shooting Star, or Love Minus Zero, no limit by Dylan. I quite like the idea of the last tune being Samba Pa Ti by Santana. The first minute is slow and sombre then livens up, so to me it represents sadness, but then the living have to get with life. But. It is more important that thise left behind choose.

I had a proper stand up row with (now ex) DP about funeral music.

He is absolutely certain he wants "Fuck me gently" by Tenacious D at his funeral. I pointed out that his kids would be very unlikely to want to play that, and if I was planning it then I wouldnt play it either. He said that his kids (12 and 13 at the time) would think it was funny. I pointed out that no one goes to a funeral for a laugh and that regardless of how hilarious he thinks it is (yeah yeah...I know) its completely inappropriate for a funeral.

He was adamant that his friends would make sure it was played, I know his friends (thats how we met) and I was equally adamant that they wouldnt. Yes he is a classless arsehole, thats why we split.

He simply could not accept that his funeral isnt for him, it will about him but not for him. That he is viewing it as if he was there and laughing along but he wont be. His funeral is for his kids and family and friends, he wont be there! (edit....yes he will but ykwim!)

So the musical decisions about your own funeral should take into account the people that are actually going to be aware of it, cos you wont be! Thats why I hate "jokey" funeral music as it never lands as the deceased thinks it will.

Ooh if my kids decide to hold a funeral, I want
Just Breathe by Pearl Jam
Wish you were here by Pink Floyd
and Eulogy by Frank Turner

All brilliant

I would like Dido's lament from Purcell's 'Dido and Aeneas', otherwise known as 'When I am laid in Earth' or 'Remember me'. Alison Moyet did quite a good version in 2004. I don't think my family would like it though, I think they would think it too morbid. It is just a song that I love.

When I had aggressive breast cancer at 50 I decided I wanted ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol played at my funeral. I didn’t tell anyone.13 years later it was the first song at my wedding. My new husband picked it but hadn’t known about the funeral song, after we had a great time at a Snow Patrol concert. As a footnote Gary Lightbody is from my home town and I see him often walking about.

Caskets (Inpatient - Chris Webby / Ren collab)

If I don't wake tomorrow morning
Empty shoes on the side of the hall
And if my number, it stops calling
Picture frames hanging up by the door
You try to reach right in
And hold on to the little things
But they slip away
But it's okay
'Cause I had a hell of a time
Know that I had the time of my life
So remember me and smile
All of the souls heading back home down a one-way road
So it goes
Until the caskets close
And if you get that sinking feeling
Thinking 'bout the time we shared
I hope it helps you with your healing
Knowing that I wasn't scared
I savored everything
I pressed the world up against my skin
I was lucky, I guess
I always found the beauty in the mess
You gotta hold on to the little things
But you gotta let go just a little bit
When another one goes, one will find their wings
Then they'll find their way home, little take and give
Into the unknown and the changing tides
The sun sets low on an endless sky
So much we don't know, I don't know why
But I'll be fine
'Cause I had a hell of a time
Know that I had the time of my life
So remember me and smile
All of the souls heading back home down a one-way road
So it goes
Until the caskets close
Raise a toast as the curtains close
And the sunset fades to black
So the story goes, we all walk with ghosts
No one-way tickets back
The casualties of our memories
That slip right through the cracks
All the inside jokes and the times we spoke
Will stay frozen in the past
You gotta hold on to the little things
But you gotta let go just a little bit
I guess we'll never know what tomorrow brings
But just know you're not alone in the thick of it
I know it feels cold when the caskets close
Stories untold on a headstone
For those who grow old, it'll fly by
In the blink of an eye
So we'll have a hell of a time
Know that we'll have the time of our lives
So remember us and smile
All of the souls heading back home down a one-way road
So it goes
Until the caskets close
We'll have a hell of a time
Know that we'll have the time of our lives
So remember us and smile
All of the souls heading back home down a one-way road
So it goes
Until the caskets close
