A bit morbid I know, sorry!
have you given this much thought? I know it sometimes pops into my head when I hear a song that moves me.

mine would be Blessings, by Hollow Coves. I think joyful and mellow. i love the lyrics

what’s yours?!
funny / sad / uplifting / depressing / dance anthem?

I used to want Canaan's Land, by Kate Rusby (well, it's a folk song but hers is the version I know), but a few years ago I sang it at a friend's funeral and it's so entwined with memories of them now that it's theirs not mine.

So I don't have a definite list at the moment but front runners are
Burial Blessing - Johnny Flynn
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
Into my Arms - Nick Cave

And probably more I will remember after I hit post.

Sand Drawing - Judah Earl

Going in Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack, reflection music would be Lark Ascending by Vaughn Williams and going out would be Fanfare for the Common Man by Emerson, Lake and Palmer! Bit eclectic I know, but that's me!

I will ask that instead of cash donations everyone brings towels to donate to the period poverty campaign my local food bank runs.

Direct funeral for me. If I were though it would be Sarah’s Song by Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham.

Dorsetisbeautiful · 30/09/2026 19:54

Seasons in the Sun (70s song) and Mahler’s Fifth.

Always look on the bright side of life .

Who wants to live forever - Queen.

Having had to plan 2 funerals this year, my thoughts are: write down your wishes if you want something specific, or let your loved ones know if you’re happy for them to choose whatever they want - it makes a huge difference the more they know.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 30/09/2026 19:59

I will leave it up to those left behind to decide if I have a funeral or direct cremation but if they want ideas for a play list for "the after party" or indeed, for the funeral I would like

When this passing world is done (Bryn Haworth/Kevin Prosch version)
Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from Nabucco
Arglwydd dyma fi - if they aren't singing hymns then I would like the Cerys Matthews version on the playlist.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 30/09/2026 20:01

I would pick Life Eternal by Ghost, I think the lyrics are really beautiful.

Weeellokthen · 30/09/2026 20:03

Across the universe- Rufus Wainright

Don’t fear the reaper.

RaspberryRiddle · 30/09/2026 20:28

The Seekers and The Carnival is Over. I'd also like Morningtown Ride by The Seekers.

Other contenders include;
The Tourists - So Good To Be Back Home Again
Matt Monroe - Born Free
White Horses Theme
Andy Williams - Almost There
Somewhere My Love - Lara's Theme from Dr Zhivago
The Brothers Four - The Green Leaves of Summer
Loch Lomond - maybe the Runrig version

I'm a child of the 60s if that wasn't obvious! Thank you OP as that was an interesting exercise...

Tablesandchairs23 · 30/09/2026 20:31

Burn baby burn at my cremation .

anon666 · 30/09/2026 20:34

I've always fancied Spirit in the sky. Kinda retro but also funny.

However, in reality it might go down like a lead balloon with mourners, so I won't suggest it, because then they might feel obliged to play it. 😆

My uni friend had mentioned playing "I am the Resurrection " by the Stone Roses, which they played. It was unbelievably poignant and sad.

With dad's funeral, my sister and mum (primary school teachers) wisely chose some beautiful, uplifting songs. We still cried but at least I can look back fondly rather than cringe.

Mazza888 · 30/09/2026 20:39

Genesis’ ‘Los Endos’. It seems fitting & is a banging tune.
