Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

When my DH is sad I make him a cup of tea and invite him to moan at me all about it, then cheer him up with sex followed by a fry up.

Not original, but highly effective!

If you say so, I wouldn’t expect anything else from you as an Arse fan.

I maintain I don’t recognise any of that. Everyone I know goes straight home.

Likewise. Arse? Hilarious.

Spurs fans are the most bitter and fickle fans I’ve ever known.
They also think they are far bigger and better than they actually are. Remember “mind the gap”? And “the tide has turned in North London”? They are the only team to come 3rd in a two horse race.
As an Arsenal season ticket holder, I can assure you that we do not spend more time singing songs about Spurs than supporting our own team. We have a few songs about Spurs in the same way they have a few about us . Anyone doing the hissing is disgusting and I’ve not heard that at our ground. I would never condone it.
Spurs celebrate our losses far more than we celebrate theirs. Nayim anyone? Spurs fans in the pub I watched the game in, bought champagne and sprayed it round the pub.
My Dad lives in a majority Arsenal/Tottenham area with a few Chelsea thrown in. One of the bar workers in his local asked why it was that when Arsenal lose, the fans come back to the pub, discuss the game and get on with having a drink but when Spurs lose, they come in fuming, throw their season tickets on the floor and end up having arguments and fights with each other. She didn’t support either team. Fickle, just like I said.

Edited

btw, in the 42 years I’ve been going to games I’ve never heard a single Arse chant. You do seem overly aggressive and angry towards us when we really could not care less about you.

I’ve been going for 56 years and we have plenty of chants. I’m not angry at all. I’m providing my experience of Spurs fans. If you weren’t bothered by us, my experience would be totally different. No mind the gap, no the tide has turned in North London, no celebrating Nayim. There is no equivalent from us to you.

LlynTegid · 28/09/2026 10:37

If Liam Gallagher's alleged inside information is correct, the OPs DH has nothing to really worry about- large fine and transfer ban for a long period.

56 years. of course you have.

I would not know where to start, Gabriel and Arteta are the most loathed cheating filth in the PL. I hope you enjoy your asterisk cup.

no although judging by your comments you cannot let go of your hatred towards us.

PGMOL happily let Arteta run up and down the touch line without consequences but no double standards there and we did howl at him going to hug the ref before getting a yellow.

From a long suffering Southampton fan - he’s got have to take it on the chin I’m afraid!
we were punished hard for a lot less of a crime ….🤷🏼‍♀️

I have not mentioned your team or players once. I’ve provided my experience of your fans. You are not doing a very good job of disputing it.
Incidentally, outside of football discussion, I know and like a lot of Spurs fans. This is purely football based.

You can do what you like. No skin off my nose.

I agree. I thought the punishment absolutely did not fit the crime - which was just a bit embarrassing really, not absolutely outrageous, systemic, long-term cheating like City.

or maybe you don’t have that deep a knowledge outside of calling us ‘bitter and fickle’ and claiming we throw season tickets on the floor. Bit odd since they’re digitally kept on phones. Were you there when this alleged incident happened?

yes I’m afraid I can provide examples of how corrupt your cheating club has become until the cows come home.

Yes, and we are still waiting to find out out Manager’s punishment nearly 5 months later!

Yes, I don't think your manager needs any more punishment, he's had enough with the club punishments.

I'd be sympathetic, my club has suffered administration, relegation, points deductions but this is off the scale. It is far from just a few men kicking a ball about, it's a massive business and a lifelong passion for the supporters.

Well you haven’t been particularly complementary either. Arse? Cheaters? Asterisk cup?

Where did I say that the bar worker’s comment was recent? Obviously it was when season tickets were paper. I only have my Dad’s word for it but he’s not got form for lying. My experience of your fans isn’t only from the past few years. As I said, I’ve been going a long time. Whether you believe it or not.

But there’s no point keep derailing the thread. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on this.

i compliment you on having received 0 penalties against you and 0 red cards last season.

the rest of us have multiple receipts online to prove how absurdly unfairly your season was officiated and that’s why it’s the *cup and will be forever known.

Twilightstarbright · 28/09/2026 11:29

@Mistyglade another Spurs fan here, it has been a tough few years hasn’t it?

OP hopefully the examples in this thread of other clubs going through punishments etc and coming out the other side is reassuring for your husband. He should avoid social media for a bit and take a break from the discussions on it. Despite what Gallagher is saying, none of us actually know what the punishment will be yet and the appeal needs to take place.

You’re not bitter about it though are you?!!!!!

This will be my last post on this, as I previously said, there’s no point in keep derailing the thread. I genuinely wish you enjoyment in following your team.

really not bitter, that’s far beyond me, just wearily worn.

Have a good day, genuinely. Smile

Just keep deliberately mixing up Man U and Man City and watch his head explode, collect his life insurance and live your life as a merry widow.

Best post so far.

Cheerfully say "well you were in the second division before, so it'll just be nostalgic and you will be in the premier League again in five or six seasons, and no matter what it could still be worse; you could be a United fan"

This. My DH is such a pessimist in nature that I think once the initial shock is over with, he'll enjoy being miserable about the football again. The joy of City doing well just did not sit with his world view and was not the team he'd grown up supporting. I think he felt shortchanged.

That said, as someone who doesn't know any footballing history, I am grateful for the Rangers / Juventus tips as clubs to point at when he gets TOO pessimistic!

Haha how did this turn into an Arsenal v Spurs fight?

Can't we all agree to hate Chelsea (though I can't bring myself to hate their manager, the beautiful bastard).

There are ridiculous fans of every team who believe their team can do no wrong and will argue that case. It’s sad but we know the type. There are 2 on this thread proving that point.
