Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

Not sure why so many posters are being so sneery. I guess it’s because it’s football.

id sympathise. The genuine fans have been screwed over by ownership that chases success by cheating. Whatever happens there will still be a club to support in some guise.

ACynicalDad · 27/09/2026 10:14

Some good advice here but LTB is the most realistic.

Your post makes no sense. Taking what badly?

I have no idea if they lost a match, or being moved down a league or something, but in the grand scheme of things, I can't see why some sort of football bad result matters. Far more important things in life, and sounds like he is being immature. I would have no sympathy if he is sulking, being grumpy or whatever it is he is doing. It's just a load of blokes kicking a ball around a field at the end of the day.

Why did you even bother replying? 🙄

I would say ‘If Jack Grealish is looking for a new place, I could put him up for a while. Hs could also use our garden to practice in if he wanted.’ That would probably end the constant talk.

I think you're confusing "makes no sense" with "I personally don't understand it". It was on the news a lot last week (not just sports news)

No, I mean it doesn't make sense. Making reference to 'it' is vague. Good communication skills would make a reference to cue readers in to what on earth they are talking about. If I am provided with the essential parts of the information required, and I still don't know, then it would be correct to say I don't understand it.

This is the first I have heard of it. Nothing in my news feeds or on news websites that I have visited (mainstream ones)

LlynTegid · 27/09/2026 10:16

Wait for the process to take its course, the owners of Man City have expensive and probably good lawyers.

And regardless of the outcome, it will not really take away the feelings he had when City won trophies. He can still smile at Manchester United going probably yet another season winning nothing.

It has been a massive news story for the last 48 hours.

Why are you posting about something you clearly have no interest in?

Harrumphhhh · 27/09/2026 10:19

From what I understand (women’s season ticket holder so not directly affected by any premier league sanction, but indirectly, almost definitely) it could be many many more months or years of appeals, court hearings etc before any decisions are made, so the best advice for now is patience. City isn’t going to vanish. It will still exist in some form, most likely a form not too dissimilar to what we have now. Let him mope for a few days, then get him to a match (live or televised) and get him to snap the fuck out of it.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 27/09/2026 10:20

I can tell that poster how big it is - even I'm reading it, looking for more info as to what they actually did and I normally swerve anything football related.

Sensiblesal · 27/09/2026 10:20

Ask him whose name he wants printed on the back of his United shirt so you can get him one ready for city ceasing to exist.

if he supported them before they bought glory then he will soon get used to the new misery if they can carry on existing. The appeals are going to tie this up for some time so he will have time to get his head sorted

mixandmatch · 27/09/2026 10:20

I find the sneery response to football posts on here really odd. For a City fan, their victories are about more than just ‘a game with a ball’ or whatever non football lovers think about football. It is about memories and possibly about family and community too (if your DH got his love of City from his parents).

So even though I hate Man City, I am sympathetic to your DH and all the fans. I would reassure him that his memories of the great games he saw are still real, even if the rule breaking is what enabled some of those victories to happen.

I’m sorry but reference to something which is major news and has been top of all news feeds and sites isn’t unreasonable. I frankly don’t believe you’ve been reading news and seen nothing.

if you don’t read news, fine, but being faux surprised a football story is big news is tiresome

And yet, many of us do know exactly what OP means. Mumsnet is huge. Just reply to the posts you do understand and scroll on by the ones that aren’t relevant. Easy.

Justonemorething82 · 27/09/2026 10:30

Remind him that Rangers didn’t take that many years to get back to the top tier after being dumped down the leagues. “Did you see their score over Celtic recently?”

I am being completely genuine. I just looked at the BBC website to see if anything was there, and it isn't. I also have an Android news feed thing that selects top articles from various news feeds/sources and there is nothing there either. Based on people's responses I thought I had perhaps missed something that was there to see, so investigated. Absolutely nothing on Facebook news feeds or in people's comments. I don't watch TV. I don't read newspapers.

It's a bit rude to say you don't believe me and essentially accuse me of lying. I do read the news, and I'm generally well informed about what is going on in the world. Perhaps my preferences have been set to avoid all sports related news, so it filters it out.

Brefugee · 27/09/2026 10:33

Hattermatter · 27/09/2026 10:06

Remind him when Luton Town were found guilty on 15 counts, they got a 30 point deduction and a fine, the MCFC equivalent will be 228 point deduction and roughly a £350000 fine!

remind him that when Wednesday had a shit owner, who didn't always pay the staff and players the fans were punished by having a massive points deduction and were relegated.

And yet we still turn out to support our team because we are supporters of a football club not fairweather supporters/plastic fans.

Fair enough

buy why comment though? Why feel the need to weigh in with “I don’t know what this is about”?

Give him a blow job, he'll cheer up no end

Brefugee · 27/09/2026 10:36

really? is there any need for that?

globalinfluence · 27/09/2026 10:38

Exactly. The loyal fans have been treated with nothing but contempt. The club deserve to disappear, and all the fans go to another club. They might find one in and around Manchester.

It was the first headline news item on the BBC website and 6 and 10 o’clock news programmes on Friday night.

OP I don’t follow football and nor does anyone in my house so I’d be of the grow up and get over it persuasion. If he supported them before they had all the money thrown at them to be successful he’s been there for them during difficult times before. And at the end of the day although I know it’s important to some people it is only football. No one died. Perspective

I agree. Football often gets a sneery response on here.

Funny you don’t get people on style and beauty saying ‘it’s only lipstick’ or ‘why do you care about an expensive handbag’

And yet literally everyone else understood.

TorroFerney · 27/09/2026 10:42

As my father in law said when my mum asked what had happened , they’ve been found guilty of something they did. He’s a staunch evertonian though so probably only sad it wasn’t Liverpool!
