Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

No, I mean it doesn't make sense. Making reference to 'it' is vague. Good communication skills would make a reference to cue readers in to what on earth they are talking about. If I am provided with the essential parts of the information required, and I still don't know, then it would be correct to say I don't understand it.

This is the first I have heard of it. Nothing in my news feeds or on news websites that I have visited (mainstream ones)

It has been really quite big news and not just on the sports pages…we talked about it at work, there’s only one football fan in the ten of us (Liverpool) and he wasn’t really participating.

But even if I’d explained or added a link I’m not sure it would have helped if you really had no interest. It’s still on bbc news front page, albeit not quite at the top anymore….

And no, I’m not going to LtB about it. But his dad is a Man City supporter all his life and he’s 80, his son is… it’s in the family.

Its the sporting equivalent of The Dressing Gown of Doom

Sidebeforeself · 27/09/2026 11:45

I think as punishment they should be forced to release Haaland from his ridiculously long contract. Then the rules should be changed so that he is forced to play for the team of the city of his birth. Which means he would have to play for Leeds United. Which just happens to be my team!

So there you go OP..tell your husband every cloud has a silver lining!

Quite the contrary. The charges are that they have in fact injected too much cash.

and seemingly how they have done it.

Just seen a post about City “buying their way to titles”
Firstly, clubs have been buying their way to titles for god knows how long, so weird that people only seem to think City have done this.
Secondly, when you think this, it’s worth looking at NET spend. And when you do and compare to other clubs, City have done some great business!

When it comes to FFP, surely the fact that clubs are billions in debt, piss poor financial management and stadium that’s a H&S nightmare should also be investigated? And that’s one of the “elite” teams in this country!

Where did I say that city were the first or only club to buy success? They weren’t the first, they won’t be the last. I specifically also mentioned Chelsea. Another club whose fans make me eye rolly. If everyone who says they were at Stamford bridge in the 80s had been at Stamford bridge in the 80s there would’ve been 250,000 a week there.

Bit like city fans having to preface every comment they make with a proclamation of how long they’ve been supporting just in case they are suspected of being glory hunters. (Spoiler: I went to Maine road as an away fan many times in the 80s and I didn’t see 65,000 people there either!)

Remind him when Luton Town were found guilty on 15 counts, they got a 30 point deduction and a fine, the MCFC equivalent will be 228 point deduction and roughly a £350000 fine!

Or remind him of when Swindon Town, having won the play-off final, was demoted 2 divisions in 1990 for financial irregularities (although only one division on appeal).

It is shit for the fans, but there's nothing he can do about it and it's not worth getting stressed over. It was shit for the fans of the teams they beat whilst they were merrily breaking the rules. I'm sure it was fun when they were winning everything but the good times never last.

Your post makes no sense. Taking what badly?

I have no idea if they lost a match, or being moved down a league or something, but in the grand scheme of things, I can't see why some sort of football bad result matters. Far more important things in life, and sounds like he is being immature. I would have no sympathy if he is sulking, being grumpy or whatever it is he is doing. It's just a load of blokes kicking a ball around a field at the end of the day.

The post only makes no sense to anyone who does keep to date with current affairs.
Absolutely nothing to do with following football, been the main headline on every news report since Friday afternoon.
I love how posters think they are somewhat superior by not following football but then show themselves up by not even following daily news

Just remind him that however hard it gets, at least he’s not a red 😂

Im a blue and tbh, it is what it is. First and foremost it’s not done until it’s done and it’s far from over at this point. Has he read Khaldoons letter? I’m pretty sure there is more to come out. Khaldoon and co are astute business people and he told us a while back that he had irrefutable evidence…..a very bold statement to make if it’s untrue. Every other club in the land wants to see City fail which is why the “rumours” have gone mental.

The other thing to remember is that these rules were brought in to stop City (and the likes) being successful when they initially started to give the old boys a run for their money. The Red Cartel well and truly had their boots shaken yet were doing the same things themselves for years! And I think if the rumours are true, it’s squeaky bum time for other clubs too as they’re certainly not whiter than white!

Im gonna get so much hate for this post, but I don’t give a shit tbh and won’t be entering into any back and forth 😂 If the rumours are true, we accept what comes our way. This unbelievable period was never going to last forever, we’ve made some great memories along the way with it. I support my club through thick and thin, I was there when we were shit and I will be again, that’s how us blues roll.

🎶 Were going up….we’re going down….we’re going up….we’re going down…..

City’s going down with a billion in the bank, a billion in the bank, a billion in the bank🎶

urgh. This type of commenter is the absolute worst. Screed of "everyone hates us i don't care" and "not going to engage".

Every other club in the land wants to see City fail which is why the “rumours” have gone mental.

This is bollocks. Every club will push at the boundaries. What they want to see is those who buldose them then speed away, in the meantime distorting PL finances to be rightly and proportionately punished for it. The rules are for all.

The Red Cartel well and truly had their boots shaken

Victim mentality is unattractive. And yes, they don't "like it up 'em" but it isn't only the "red cartel" who suffer, it is the entirety of the league. And following that all the other leagues who have resources sucked away as investors and advertisers go for the easy money. Meanwhile the sport and the supporters are relegated to meaningless annoyances.

I have much sympathy for the long-standing city fans who have seen ticket prices rocket, availability of extortionately priced tickets plummet and have been edged out of their own fandom. Added to the joy they had at winning cups, leagues and trophies is now tainted for them.

It is a big hot mess.

I have to agree with this. Feeling cheated out of something isn’t very nice.

I’m not sure why people take such pride in being so ignorant of what has been a huge news story.

I am a football fan, it’s a huge part of my life, it is part of my connection to my home town, my family especially my late dad, and it has given me some of the most precious memories in my life with my children. It really matters a lot to a lot of people and sneering at it being “blokes kicking a ball around” is class snobbery imo.

i think the club have behaved appallingly and I really feel for the fans. But true fans stick by their club even if they are in the lower leagues.

op you can tell him My club spent 8 years recently outside the top flight and there actually some things I miss about the championship. There are more league games, the fans tend to be genuinely interested and authentic not tourists and glory hunters and the banter is tip top!

Shinyhappyapple · 27/09/2026 12:09

@pulpJarvis
I guess making sympathy noises and agreeing with him is the only thing to do. Hopefully he’s got some mates to commiserate with him. My DH isn’t a Man City fan but he’s generally sport obsessed in general, Talksport radio on in the background. I tend to sit in another room.

There is SUCH snobbery around football on mn. It’s laughable. I half expect a rugby fan to arrive to tell us all how this could never happen in rugby because it’s a sport where everyone respects the ref and nobody Dives. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised.

Enjoy your time in the Prem. my team has just been relegated from the top flight and I’m rather enjoying actually winning a few games.

Brightbluesomething · 27/09/2026 12:18

It’ll take a while to work through to actual consequences so you may have to listen to more of the rollercoaster for some time.
I was surprised that they were found guilty on so many counts, I thought their expensive lawyers would find more loopholes.
Football isn’t fair and most of us have had to deal with owners who don’t behave well (14 years of Ashley for us). But the fans who pay to watch their club can’t control any of that. I get why he’s angry, but none of us can influence any of it. Let him vent.

Livpool · 27/09/2026 12:26

I sort of feel bad for the fans BUT this has been known about for years. Man City fans have benefited from financial cheating. I feel more sorry for fans of other clubs who have been affected.

BIWI · 27/09/2026 12:28

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 27/09/2026 10:31

I am being completely genuine. I just looked at the BBC website to see if anything was there, and it isn't. I also have an Android news feed thing that selects top articles from various news feeds/sources and there is nothing there either. Based on people's responses I thought I had perhaps missed something that was there to see, so investigated. Absolutely nothing on Facebook news feeds or in people's comments. I don't watch TV. I don't read newspapers.

It's a bit rude to say you don't believe me and essentially accuse me of lying. I do read the news, and I'm generally well informed about what is going on in the world. Perhaps my preferences have been set to avoid all sports related news, so it filters it out.

Today's Observer

  • sidebar article on the front page of the main paper
  • editorial on p3
  • double page spread analysing the story p8-9
You clearly aren't reading the papers, as this is and has been for the last day or so, a massive news story - beyond the sports pages
BIWI · 27/09/2026 12:29

It's also still on the front page of the Sky News website
