Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

I do but only a little. They broke the rules on how much you can spend. Big deal. Who cares. And got take over by a multi trillionaire arab Sheik so now are the best tream in the league rather than the worst. And all the other teams are mad jealous because they've not got a Sheik bankrolling them. That's my take anyway.

your take is so far wrong i wonder why you bothered to try to peddle it on a thread with people who actually know and appreciate what is happening here. You need an understanding of actual football culture, fandom and the rules to appreciate just how big this is.

I'm not in the UK. I support a Bundesliga team. We have very strict ownership and sponsoring rules, and the absolute shitstorm that was unleashed when one team was allowed to trample all over that has meant that it has been restricted to the one team. For sure there is a wide disparity in finances of the clubs, and there are clubs/sponsors who really push the envelope right to the bounds of nearly breaking the rules. But we can't have something like this here. And most German fans are happy with that.

Oh, I’m the worst. Ok 😂

Yes, I reckon everyone (well most) hates us. They see what they want to. There is a lot that people
dont want to see. City do a lot for the local
communities, the regeneration of the area and what that has done for Manchester, for the lads and their families in their academies many of which are from struggling backgrounds, they look after their staff, they care about people, me being one and I have my own, personal stories as to why. But nobody is interested in that.

And I meant I didn’t care if I got shit about my post because I’m a blue talking about supporting my club. I knew I’d get shit about it because everyone hates us which kinda proves my point 😂 and I say that ironically rather than from a victim mentality as you so suggest. Me not caring is the opposite of victim mentality…..kinda ok so people don’t like us but I’m not taking that to heart and I’m cracking on regardless.

Whether people like my club, hate it or are meh towards it, I’m not particularly bothered either way, why would I be? I felt that way in the 80s and I haven’t changed my stance on it in all those years so how is that a victim mentality? And why is this an issue for you? Are you bothered whether someone likes your club or not? There is nothing I can do to change people’s opinion on things, so no point wasting my energy on that.

They’re my club, I supported them before the PL even existed and I will continue to support them until the end of my time and during whatever comes our way. That’s it. We don’t have a victim mentality. We have for many, many decades taken the piss out of ourselves at every opportunity. That whole song at the end of my first post was a nod to that!

The old boys certainly did have their boots shaken when we started to challenge. True story, no victim mentality in that.

If the process was fair and just, and it is confirmed that we have been found guilty, then we take what comes to us, dig deep and crack on. Like I keep saying though, there is a long way to go with this one yet!

take your pale blue blinkers off. We are not talking about what they may or may not do for charity (as a fig leaf for their board room crimes)

And we don't "hate you". Frankly? i feel for long term city fans. Fans like you? i don't give them any thought other than to wonder if the club is so fantastic, why the stadium isn't full to bursting every week.

No problem. It was pretty funny showing you that even in your barrel scrape, you clearly didn't know that City were financially doping years before your example.

Never said that’s what I was trying to prove. What I actually said is that people are banging on about City like their own shit doesn’t stink. And that’s a direct quote.

Never once have I said City are innocent, because I like everyone else do not know the evidence of what was put before the panel assembled by Michael Rosen KC and member of Arsenal FC. Right now, I’m waiting to see what happens next and if we are found guilty, we take whatever comes our way on the chin which is something I’ve ALWAYS said.

What I’m saying is that other clubs are not whiter than white and there are many examples of that.

Spurs fan here, all I can suggest is ‘diddums’ to the poor fellow. He doesn’t know he’s born unless he lived through the agony of our club this past two years.

I don’t have blinkers on of any colour.

Fans like me? You mean ones who have had a season ticket since 1993? The ones who travelled to watch their team when they were in the depths of the third tier? Maine Road full every week even in the third tier? Ok 👌 Fans Like Me.

Of course there are things that annoy me about the club. Same for every fan at every club isn’t it? But that’s a whole different conversation which Im
more than happy to debate. But that’s not this thread.

And wondered how long it would take for the empty seats comments to come out 😂 took a while tbf, but I’ll tick that one off on my Bingo card! How original 😂

You said people acting holier than thou have short memories, then acted holier than thou by dredging up a 111 year old incident, and showed that you have a short memory even in the stupid context you referenced because your memory doesn't go far back enough to know how City were cheating in 1904. It made you sound ridiculous.

Back to what people have said, I've not seen one person say no club other than City has ever done anything wrong. That's a strawman. City are, however, the only club to have done the things they've done in the last 20 years. There is no way to make this any less true.

And many of us football fans are sympathetic with the plight of City fans. I think it's a bad thing that a proper football club with a proud, interesting history like City could ever have been used as the sportswashing plaything of despots who can completely fuck the club over with their corruption.

mtobrokeme · 27/09/2026 14:58

Could be worse. You could have been married to a die hard Wednesday fan last season! I mean, at least your husband has seen and experienced some success, albeit as the result of cheating! I’m sure he made hay while the sun shone!

Feel for you, I really do. Poor show at your place and I hope it gets turned around soon. I remember being in awe of Spurs when they had Linekar and Gazza. You deserve better.

We can talk about more recent examples if you want?

Going back that far was to show that there has always been financial scandal and corruption in the game and it’s not just city.

Season ticket holders here and despite the shit show that it’s been lately it’s a privilege to see the support that team have each week! WAWAW!!

god you are predictable. Why are there empty seats though? is it that the actual fans cba with the off-pitch shenanegins? (would have sympathy with that)
Are they being priced out of the tickets? (deffo have sympathy with that)
Empty seats in such a great stadium with a team that is clearly on a winning streak is very odd. So what is the reason?

Nobody ever said City were the sole team in footballing history to have done anything wrong, so that's a strawman. It's not a point that needed to be refuted and in doing so, you almost certainly increased the number of people who know City financially doped long before the UAE turned up. It was an attempt to whatabout that made people look right back at poor behaviour from City.

Superhansrantowindsor · 27/09/2026 15:10

The damage is done. City have been able to turn themselves into a much bigger club than they used to be so unless they are MASSIVELY punished it will be the same old story with them winning everything because on the back of their success they now do have the massive sponsorship deals and attract the best players. In the time frame in question they were able to poach the players from other clubs.
id like to see a league where every team had the same amount of money to spend or severe limits on spending. If everyone had the same money then we’d see who was really good at recognising potential in young players and who is the best tactician.
The rules stink. Look at Villa and Newcastle - trying to get into the very top and they can’t.
Its sort of boring now with how they same clubs have a hold on the top. You get the odd blip with Leicester winning the league and Bournemouth getting into Europe, but generally speaking you know who is going to be top four year on year.

FFP rules are supposed to somewhat level the playing field, tho.
As for the big six - this seems to be true in the bundesliga, Serie A etc. Which is why I'm not against them all pissing off and forming their closed Super League.

Predictable?! The empty seats quote definitely was 😂

Whole host of reasons why any supporter may not be able to make a match, not just one. My dad couldn’t make half a season due to being terminally ill. I also didn’t attend a lot of those games because I was with him.

Tell him to switch to supporting the women’s team.
Tickets are much cheaper, you can drink in the stands and still have a pre and post match beer in MaryD’s.

We support both the men’s and women’s team in this house and I have to say, going to watch the women has been far more enjoyable recently. It’s such a nice atmosphere.

Thank you I grew up in the era of Glen Hoddle and Graham Roberts. It’s agonising watching my son grow up through this era. Kids can be bloody spiteful and I feel awful having bestowed the allegiance to Spurs on the poor lad.

The 16/17 season under Poch with Erickson, Dele, Kane and Sonny at the helm were wonderful days and I was lucky enough to have a season ticket back then.

over the past two years whenever we think It can’t get any worse standing on the precipice of the abyss in the sidelines watching our current squad meander about, it somehow still manages to plunge deeper.

I’m afraid I have no sympathy for certain clubs riddled in dirty money who’ve been caught out cheating.

Football fans have to take the highs with the lows.

this is exactly what we’ve done. We had a wonderful time last Sunday at Crystal Palace where our Spurs ladies beat them 7 nil!!!

Cheerfully say "well you were in the second division before, so it'll just be nostalgic and you will be in the premier League again in five or six seasons, and no matter what it could still be worse; you could be a United fan"
