Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

OP posts:

Nothing will come of it OP. He doesn’t need to worry. They’ll appeal, which will take a few more years, then they’ll give money to the right people, and end up being acquitted of all charges. The very worst that will happen will be a fine of a few million, which the Man City owner will find down the back of the settee.

Also, tell your husband that football is still football, whatever division you play in. My team won the Premier League 10 years ago. Now we’re languishing mid table in League 1, but the sky hasn’t fallen in and life goes on.

I agree. Football often gets a sneery response on here.

Funny you don’t get people on style and beauty saying ‘it’s only lipstick’ or ‘why do you care about an expensive handbag’

you'd get (rightly) slaughtered.

Same on the football threads.

But this is "chat" so I'd guess that anyone can comment. Netiquette seems to be a thing of the past now.

MadellineBellPictureMeGoneNS · 27/09/2026 10:47

"it's only a game" I double dare you!!

Op can you clarify what “taking it badly” entails?

Can you remind him how much he used to loathe Chelsea and how they bought their success under Abramovic while city languished in the lower leagues? Then he might get an idea of how much sympathy he is due.

I am a massive football fan (not of an “big club”) and I can imagine how awful this is for fans. But for fans of every other club they have so little sympathy as we have watched City buy their way to titles and trophies, which the city fans have understandably enjoyed while everyone else looks on incredulously.

BadgerBadgerBear · 27/09/2026 10:34

Fair enough

buy why comment though? Why feel the need to weigh in with “I don’t know what this is about”?

It's just a weird thing people do when they look down at things to try to feel superior. Same as the people who feel moved to comment on photos or posts about celebrities with "Who?". For some reason they never seem to do it about, for example books they've never heard of or political events about which they are equally ignorant.

Sakura7 · 27/09/2026 10:50

I don't agree with the people saying nothing will come of it. This is very very serious (unprecedented in English football really) and the PL would not have brought it this far just to give them a slap on the wrist.

If Everton, Forest, Leicester, etc can get significant points deductions for just one breach of the rules, you have to throw the book at City. Not to mention their refusal to cooperative with the investigation.

The other clubs won't stand for a lack of action here.

There is precident with Juventus in Italy, who were relegated and stripped of titles.

I read that the appeal has to be completed 12 weeks after its initiated?

PiggyPlumPie · 27/09/2026 10:51

Can sympathise up to a point, Derby County fan who got docked 21 points by the EFL. But am not convinced that they will be punished appropriately which is unfair on all the other clubs who have been punished.

Tell him that there is another Manchester club he can support instead.😜

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 27/09/2026 10:53

And at the end of the day although I know it’s important to some people it is only football. No one died. Perspective

Breaking financial rules you're supposed to be following for nearly a decade and not co-operating with investigations is pretty serious whoever you are.

mixandmatch · 27/09/2026 10:55

Yes exactly @Tablo - 'why do you care about handbags or lipstick or botox?' or indeed, frankly, 9 out of 10 of the things that parents of small children (me included when my kids were little) spent all our time fretting about and I now realise are mainly irrelevant and pointless as they're almost grown up!

People care about what they care about!

Goonie1 · 27/09/2026 10:56

Just remind him that however hard it gets, at least he’s not a red 😂

Im a blue and tbh, it is what it is. First and foremost it’s not done until it’s done and it’s far from over at this point. Has he read Khaldoons letter? I’m pretty sure there is more to come out. Khaldoon and co are astute business people and he told us a while back that he had irrefutable evidence…..a very bold statement to make if it’s untrue. Every other club in the land wants to see City fail which is why the “rumours” have gone mental.

The other thing to remember is that these rules were brought in to stop City (and the likes) being successful when they initially started to give the old boys a run for their money. The Red Cartel well and truly had their boots shaken yet were doing the same things themselves for years! And I think if the rumours are true, it’s squeaky bum time for other clubs too as they’re certainly not whiter than white!

Im gonna get so much hate for this post, but I don’t give a shit tbh and won’t be entering into any back and forth 😂 If the rumours are true, we accept what comes our way. This unbelievable period was never going to last forever, we’ve made some great memories along the way with it. I support my club through thick and thin, I was there when we were shit and I will be again, that’s how us blues roll.

🎶 Were going up….we’re going down….we’re going up….we’re going down…..

City’s going down with a billion in the bank, a billion in the bank, a billion in the bank🎶

Sakura7 · 27/09/2026 11:02

It's a lot more than just rumours, you're firmly in denial there @Goonie1

The 'red cartel' stuff is hilarious considering they are the clubs who built their success the right way and have been cheated out of titles. Not to mention the clubs like Everton and Leicester who missed out on CL qualification.

Goonie1 · 27/09/2026 11:03

Just seen a post about City “buying their way to titles”
Firstly, clubs have been buying their way to titles for god knows how long, so weird that people only seem to think City have done this.
Secondly, when you think this, it’s worth looking at NET spend. And when you do and compare to other clubs, City have done some great business!

When it comes to FFP, surely the fact that clubs are billions in debt, piss poor financial management and stadium that’s a H&S nightmare should also be investigated? And that’s one of the “elite” teams in this country!

Ha! This made me chuckle. They did it the right way? 😂😂😂😂😂 that will have me laughing for at least the rest of the day 😂

Im not in denial at all. Like I said, if the rumours are true, we take what is coming to us. What I’m quite sure of is that there is more to play out on this.

BIWI · 27/09/2026 10:13

TBH it's hard to feel sympathy for the team, because this has been going on for years. During which time they have been trousering huge amounts of cash.

But I do sympathise with fans. Except that anyone who supports Man City is clearly deluded. (Gooner household)

Quite the contrary. The charges are that they have in fact injected too much cash.

And yet, many of us do know exactly what OP means. Mumsnet is huge. Just reply to the posts you do understand and scroll on by the ones that aren’t relevant. Easy.

Oh but then that poster couldn’t come on and have their superior sneer at a football post! It’s just a game, dontcha know. I also don’t believe they are reading mainstream UK media and not seeing anything, it’s been the biggest story for the last 2 days.

MissJoGrant · 27/09/2026 11:11

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 27/09/2026 10:31

I am being completely genuine. I just looked at the BBC website to see if anything was there, and it isn't. I also have an Android news feed thing that selects top articles from various news feeds/sources and there is nothing there either. Based on people's responses I thought I had perhaps missed something that was there to see, so investigated. Absolutely nothing on Facebook news feeds or in people's comments. I don't watch TV. I don't read newspapers.

It's a bit rude to say you don't believe me and essentially accuse me of lying. I do read the news, and I'm generally well informed about what is going on in the world. Perhaps my preferences have been set to avoid all sports related news, so it filters it out.

It was the top story on the BBC news website on Friday and is still on the front page now.

You're making yourself look rather foolish.

Go on then, tell us about the financial breaches of the 'red cartel'?

They are the biggest clubs because they built their success over decades. They have the biggest commercial revenue for that reason, not because a nation state pumped vast amounts of money into them.

CoffeeandCakeBreak · 27/09/2026 09:59

Your post makes no sense. Taking what badly?

I have no idea if they lost a match, or being moved down a league or something, but in the grand scheme of things, I can't see why some sort of football bad result matters. Far more important things in life, and sounds like he is being immature. I would have no sympathy if he is sulking, being grumpy or whatever it is he is doing. It's just a load of blokes kicking a ball around a field at the end of the day.

Do you not watch the news?

TrainyWainy · 27/09/2026 11:19

As a Manc and not a City supporter, I hope they get their club back. I'm long enough in the tooth to know and respect people who were there in the third tier in the 90s, most of whom enjoyed the ride, and some of whom have always had reservations about this.

However, I take it he's not one of the ones who had any objection to his historic, culturally significant football club being used as the plaything of a repressive petrostate? Might make it more difficult!

Pedallleur · 27/09/2026 11:20

Hattermatter · 27/09/2026 10:06

Remind him when Luton Town were found guilty on 15 counts, they got a 30 point deduction and a fine, the MCFC equivalent will be 228 point deduction and roughly a £350000 fine!

That's about a week's wages for Haaland

Startoftheyear2026 · 27/09/2026 11:21

@CoffeeandCakeBreak it’s all over my BBC News feed so again as PP have said, this is a you problem not the OP’s problem. I have no football interest and I understand the story.

TrainyWainy · 27/09/2026 11:22

The other thing to remember is that these rules were brought in to stop City (and the likes) being successful when they initially started to give the old boys a run for their money.

That's one way of looking at it. Another is that they were brought in during the wake of the terrible 08 financial crash in an attempt to protect clubs and the leagues from consequences of the sort of recklessness we were seeing at that time from, say Portsmouth.

"I'm so sorry darling, who could ever have predicted that a large wealthy corporation might behave in an unethical manner?'

As an aside, I wonder where the glory hunters will go now?
