Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

your take is so far wrong i wonder why you bothered to try to peddle it on a thread with people who actually know and appreciate what is happening here. You need an understanding of actual football culture, fandom and the rules to appreciate just how big this is.

I'm not in the UK. I support a Bundesliga team. We have very strict ownership and sponsoring rules, and the absolute shitstorm that was unleashed when one team was allowed to trample all over that has meant that it has been restricted to the one team. For sure there is a wide disparity in finances of the clubs, and there are clubs/sponsors who really push the envelope right to the bounds of nearly breaking the rules. But we can't have something like this here. And most German fans are happy with that.

We could learn a lot from the Bundesliga!

Its sort of boring now with how they same clubs have a hold on the top. You get the odd blip with Leicester winning the league and Bournemouth getting into Europe, but generally speaking you know who is going to be top four year on year.

FFP rules are supposed to somewhat level the playing field, tho.
As for the big six - this seems to be true in the bundesliga, Serie A etc. Which is why I'm not against them all pissing off and forming their closed Super League.

@Brefugee I think FFP does the opposite. It makes it even more of a closed shop. Because smaller teams can’t consistently generate the revenue, and almost inevitably fall foul of FFP.

Leicester won the Premier League, and still had players taken away by other teams. In order to compete at a high level, they had to spend more money to get and keep players. Then it went wrong, and they were in trouble.

It’s a gamble - you have to spend big and hope you stay up top, bringing in more money. If you don’t spend big, you’ll never sustain it, and you’ll slip down the table. If you do spend big, you might still finish low down the league (player injury etc), and then suddenly you end up breaching FFP.

The big teams have the squad depth, the global fan case, the constant high income stream - which enables them to weather the odd storm and still stay near the top. Smaller teams are always just one bad signing or one ACL rupture away from an FFP breach.

Spurs fan here, all I can suggest is ‘diddums’ to the poor fellow. He doesn’t know he’s born unless he lived through the agony of our club this past two years.

Oh shut up! I hate big club supporters bleating about the agony of supporting them. So bloody entitled. Try being a Bury fan, or supporting Macclesfield town. Or a club like Leicester City struggling in league one now after two successive relegations. And get a grip. Especially considering you’ve won a European Trophy in that terrible time you’re having.

My own team (Wolves) had been in the prem and the old 4th division in my own footballing supporting lifetime.

No team is too big to go down or too big to be punished if they break the rules.

If you’re not good enough, you get relegated. Simple as.

I mean the club was being run by actual chimpanzees, of course something was up

TrainyWainy · 27/09/2026 15:37

It's difficult. On the one hand, the rules do favour teams with already established fanbases. On the other hand, overspending is obviously a risk to smaller clubs too and everyone being able to spend whatever they want with no limits is not a recipe for equality either.

I'm receptive to sensible arguments for changing them, but of course that wouldn't change the reality that City flouting them when other teams had to observe them is cheating and unfair. Leicester are a great what if example. Doing badly now, what difference might it have made if they'd been 4th rather than 5th in 2020 and 2021, and qualified for the Champions League both seasons.

Your post makes no sense. Taking what badly?

I have no idea if they lost a match, or being moved down a league or something, but in the grand scheme of things, I can't see why some sort of football bad result matters. Far more important things in life, and sounds like he is being immature. I would have no sympathy if he is sulking, being grumpy or whatever it is he is doing. It's just a load of blokes kicking a ball around a field at the end of the day.

The post makes perfect sense.

Your ignorance on the matter doesnt equate to complete dismissal because you don’t understand the magnitude.

This isn’t a match loss, or loss of a player or coach leaving. It is potentially thr complete destruction of the team - loss of titles, serious point deduction, relegation multiple times.

I have no issue of people don’t like football but let’s not bring it all down because you don’t agree.

sorry to hear about your dad.

Thank you. Appreciate it.

There are many reasons people can’t attend. And yes, ticket prices are shocking, life happens (I’ve had to miss games being a single mum and not having childcare for example), cost of living is through the roof and there are all sorts of reasons someone can’t go, it’s not just one reason for everyone.

Ticket prices have gone up, yes, but that’s what happens when you get to see some of the best players in the league, when you are watching champions league football etc. sadly for the supporters it would be bad business to keep ticket prices at a tenner a game for the later stages of the UCL. for a few years on the bounce, the club kept season ticket prices the same.

I agree that rules need to be in place to ensure clubs stay afloat but the likes of the Glazers and Hicks/Gillet in a similar fashion should not be allowed either for the same reasons.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2026 15:21

Cheerfully say "well you were in the second division before, so it'll just be nostalgic and you will be in the premier League again in five or six seasons, and no matter what it could still be worse; you could be a United fan"

This!

I had an absolute ball of a time on all those away days in Division 2! Can’t get an away ticket easily these days!

The Glazers shouldn't be allowed for the opposite reason, not the same reason. Deals like that allowed outside buyers to load our important, valuable, culturally significant football clubs with debt for their own profit, passing more costs onto our clubs and fans. It's made United artificially worse, not artificially better.

The good news is it might not be possible to do another one like that now under FFP rules, but they weren't in place in 05. So here we are.

Ask him if there is a helpline he can call like you had when take that split up? Either that or tell him to be miserable on his own time and leave him to it.

If they havent already, paddy power will have an ad with a helpline call in from city fans - going to go look now actually - it’ll be hilarious

Lol! Hardly uncouth! Clearly, the new Spurs stadium has further exacerbated the middle-class prawn sandwich element of the Spurs crowd if you find "shut up" uncouth!

I was a member at WHL throughout the 90s (my ExH is a Spurs fan - he also had a membership at the Molineux with me - and we went to many, many scores of each other's teams' games - I always sat with the Spurs fans unless it was the rare occasion they played Wolves!) so I am very well aware of the history of the club. I watched a lot of great Spurs players - my favourites were Sir Les and Ginola, the ball just stuck to that man - and saw a lot of great games at WHL. I still have a MASSIVE soft spot for Spurs, much to the chagrin of my current DP who supports Arsenal.

What I also discovered at WHL is that Spurs fans are among the most negative, moany and miserable fans you can find. I mean, you can understand how it sticks in the craw a bit to hear you moan about the agonies you are going through when you have a. managed to stay up despite being very poor the last two seasons and b. and winning a European trophy.

Misery is indeed relative. You need more perspective!

remind him that when Wednesday had a shit owner, who didn't always pay the staff and players the fans were punished by having a massive points deduction and were relegated.

And yet we still turn out to support our team because we are supporters of a football club not fairweather supporters/plastic fans.

You were fab when you came to Coventry last season, one of our best away ends. Hopefully, you’ll be straight back up again.

i don’t know a single Spurs fan who doesn’t loathe our new cursed stadium. It’s the biggest mistake we ever made. Our old stadium and the one before (Alan Sugar’s made for some magical memories ever since my first game in 1981 when we beat Coventry City 4-1.

I really don’t recognise your your opinion of us being moany and miserable, I suppose your experiences could be different but we’re the fans who turn up week in week out cheering and singing like pathetic unrequited lovers. Arsenal and Chelsea spend more time singing about how much they hate us than they do sporting their own team. Not only that the hissing tunes they enjoy marking our Jewish heritage as another mockery of hate towards us. Suffice to say we’re a tight knit clan of supporters.

Oh and please don’t patronise me by telling me to have perspective otherwise I might have to regale you with our united counties league team’s tribulations. Histon FC have been shunted from the Isthmian league one north for the first time in its 115 year history to the northern premier midlands league where we found ourselves playing teams 95 miles away, now that’s FA restructuring based on the decisions of someone who knows f all.

It’s all relative eh! Football is a core part of who we are, naturally we take it personally when we’re so emotionally invested.

as for our prawn sandwiches I believe it was Roy Keane (a Spurs fan) marking the corporate United fans with that gem, don’t think he’d appreciate your opinion on us being that!

DialSquare · 28/09/2026 09:51

Spurs fans are the most bitter and fickle fans I’ve ever known.
They also think they are far bigger and better than they actually are. Remember “mind the gap”? And “the tide has turned in North London”? They are the only team to come 3rd in a two horse race.
As an Arsenal season ticket holder, I can assure you that we do not spend more time singing songs about Spurs than supporting our own team. We have a few songs about Spurs in the same way they have a few about us . Anyone doing the hissing is disgusting and I’ve not heard that at our ground. I would never condone it.
Spurs celebrate our losses far more than we celebrate theirs. Nayim anyone? Spurs fans in the pub I watched the game in, bought champagne and sprayed it round the pub.
My Dad lives in a majority Arsenal/Tottenham area with a few Chelsea thrown in. One of the bar workers in his local asked why it was that when Arsenal lose, the fans come back to the pub, discuss the game and get on with having a drink but when Spurs lose, they come in fuming, throw their season tickets on the floor and end up having arguments and fights with each other. She didn’t support either team. Fickle, just like I said.

Not a Spurs fan myself, but I have good friends who are and feel I have to defend them a little bit! They're nothing like the descriptions above.

Every fanbase has some idiots. I've come across some insufferable Arsenal fans lately (not saying it's the majority).

I'm a Liverpool fan and I'm sad about the state of Anfield these days. Feels like a morgue at times unless it's a big game. It's full of old men who've had season tickets for decades, just moaning constantly, and calling anyone who wears red or starts a song a tourist or a wool.

The atmosphere improves significantly for the cup games that these fellas can't be bothered with, giving fans who don't get to go as much a chance.

I think all clubs probably have a few of these types.
