Any tips for dealing with Man City supporter husband?

My Man City supporter husband, man and boy, even back when they were crap, is taking it all very badly. Any tips? At the moment I’m making vague sympathy noises and hoping he grows up and gets over it….

ETA I don’t follow football and am finding it hard to empathise as can’t imagine anything similar flooring me…

I learnt from experience that saying, “At least the season ticket will be cheaper” does not go down well.

Goldenboysmum · 27/09/2026 09:37

Ignore him 😅

That's what I do when anyone in my football mad family start talking football, I have absolutely no interest!

Ooh…even I wouldn’t have said that!

Ask him if there is a helpline he can call like you had when take that split up? Either that or tell him to be miserable on his own time and leave him to it.

HoppityBun · 27/09/2026 09:39

Fine him. 114 times.

pulpJarvis · 27/09/2026 09:40

I’m loving the supportiveness so far….

I don’t have any tips, sorry, but I do feel for the fans. They didn’t cause this but they’ll carry the emotional weight of it. So you can tell him he has the sympathy of a Mumsnet rando…

Sakura7 · 27/09/2026 09:40

Remind him it's only two weeks til their next game at Anfield.

TallSturdyGirls · 27/09/2026 09:42

Im a City Fan. We all knew it was coming and most of us (old fans) hate the way the team is driven by money.

Janefx40 · 27/09/2026 09:44

I’m feeling quite stressed myself!! I mean no doubt they deserve whatever they get but pretty awful for the fans - and the players and staff.

I appreciate not everyone likes football (neither do I) but this is a bit bigger than just losing a match. They could lose the whole team.

Mine also watched from when they were in lower divisions so I guess he’d just continue supporting them in lower leagues but if the club totally shuts down then what?

So I’m not sure what you can do but I do think it is worth sympathy…and it’s going to go on for months if not years I’d say so brace yourself!!!

Your post makes no sense. Taking what badly?

I have no idea if they lost a match, or being moved down a league or something, but in the grand scheme of things, I can't see why some sort of football bad result matters. Far more important things in life, and sounds like he is being immature. I would have no sympathy if he is sulking, being grumpy or whatever it is he is doing. It's just a load of blokes kicking a ball around a field at the end of the day.

Weeellokthen · 27/09/2026 10:01

Divorce is your only option here, sadly 😁

it's a bit more complex than that, according to this (googled 'what did Manchester City do? because as a non-fan I have no idea)

Sorry, quoted the full post there.

Remind him when Luton Town were found guilty on 15 counts, they got a 30 point deduction and a fine, the MCFC equivalent will be 228 point deduction and roughly a £350000 fine!

I think you're confusing "makes no sense" with "I personally don't understand it". It was on the news a lot last week (not just sports news)

Remind him how crap Man U are right now?

cheesychipsontheoche · 27/09/2026 10:10

Suggest he and his fellow Maine road lads either start supporting Maine Road FC or set up FC City of Manchester (in the same vein as the red side of the city did when they weren’t happy with Man U ownership).

They have! Divorce post above

CrocsNotDocs · 27/09/2026 10:11

Just keep deliberately mixing up Man U and Man City and watch his head explode, collect his life insurance and live your life as a merry widow.

The device that you used to type your reply can also search for context so you understand. Just google the key works with sept 2026 and you’ll get loads of

If it was a club from the lower leagues they would have been booted out a long time ago. The ‘big’ clubs always wangle things to their advantage

BIWI · 27/09/2026 10:13

TBH it's hard to feel sympathy for the team, because this has been going on for years. During which time they have been trousering huge amounts of cash.

But I do sympathise with fans. Except that anyone who supports Man City is clearly deluded. (Gooner household)
