Does anyone else not own a hair dryer?

Just reading the thread about the house seller wondering what to wear when doing viewings. She mentioned having wet hair and some PP are commenting on this. This led me to wonder about how many people are like me and have never owned a hairdrier. I’m 48. My mum had one when I was a child so it’s not as if I’ve never lived somewhere with one or had one used on my hair but as an adult I’ve just never seen the need for one. I don’t really like the way hair feels or smells after it’s been heat-dried.
Anyone else not own a hairdryer?
(p.s: I’m not even sure how to spell it 😂)

No hairdryer - I prefer my hair to be itself as it were

EBearhug · 24/09/2026 23:47

I do have one, as I inherited the c1979 one we had as children. I don't use it, and I refuse it in the hairdresser's, too. My hair is fine and straight and dries quickly by itself.

I might use it for the radiators. I was thinking the other day the bedroom one looks dusty, and now there's a solution I never thought of. Thank you.

I can't imagine not owning a hairdryer.

I have very thick, heavy straight hair which can take two or three hours to dry on its own.

What do you do if you have a cold? Three hours with wet hair in February, and I'd be coughing for a week.

I don’t own one, I have very thick long hair, which is bleached and coloured and I try and avoid unnecessary heat. It takes probably 4-5 hours to air dry and then I straighten it.

Also, cold weather and wet hair doesn’t make you ill, surely you know that?

I had one once but haven't used it for years. Moved house and have no idea where it might be.

Do those of you with no hairdryer no go out to work in the morning, or take kids to school? I wouldn't do either with wet hair. Mine takes about 4 hours to dry naturally.

Mine takes about 4-5 hours to dry naturally. I wash it once a week, on a free evening and then straighten it in the morning. If it’s a day when I have to go out early I’ll shove it in a bun until I get home and can straighten it

My hair tends to be too dry, I stopped using hair dryers about 45 years ago.

FFSItsTooHot · 25/09/2026 01:15

I haven't owned a hairdryer for about 15 years now. I used to blow dry my hair religiously after washing it,but since developing a triple whammy in my right shoulder (I'm right handed) of RSI, tendinitis and arthritis,I had to admit defeat. Holding up a hairdryer,or raising my hand to head level for more than a minute became so painful,I just couldn't do it anymore. So I now I just wash and go! Seriously,I wash my hair in the evening and let it dry naturally. I don't go out with wet hair.

SquirrelGG · 25/09/2026 01:42

I don't own one. Although my hair is short it still takes a long time to dry but that doesn't bother me. I've always air dried my hair, whatever the length.

Tarkan · 25/09/2026 02:25

I have curly hair and hairdryers just frizz it up way too much.

I dry mine in a clean cotton T-shirt now, just wrap it round like a turban. It keeps it smoother than a towel ever did and stays on my head a lot better too. I keep it on for as long as I can, then I let it air dry after that and the curls sit really nicely even before I put any products through it.

mathanxiety · 25/09/2026 03:15

I own one but I've used it twice in ten years.

I have one but not used it for years. I have a subscription at a blow dry bar.

This is the dream.

And what do you do when you have an emergency stain to clean off and dry your clothes?!

My bathroom has a heater thing on the wall that blows hot air out so I just hold out my item under that for a min.

I rarely use it for heat as the bathroom has a radiator, but it is amazing during winter night bathroom trips to stop me shivering as it blows hot in seconds.

I never would have picked to have one installed but I got a grant to make my bathroom wheelchair friendly and the council decided to put one in. I'd highly recommend one though.

I've never owned a hair dryer as I never liked the way it felt when my mum tried using hers on me. I can't physically use one these days anyway as I can't bend/hold my arms up properly.

Missj25 · 25/09/2026 07:35

Oh & if you do t have a fridge that defrosts itself like me , where you have to switch off & leave overnight, it’s brilliant !
Just use it on the ice box & away you go 😊

RampantIvy · 25/09/2026 09:10

Aren't most modern fridges/fridge freezers frost free these days?

I never have to defrost mine.

Tarkan · 25/09/2026 09:29

We have a new American style fridge freezer now so haven’t had to defrost a freezer for a bit but if you put hot water from the tap in a freezer bag and lie it on the shelf it defrosts really quickly AND you don’t have to stand there holding anything. That’s how I always defrosted the old one.

SevenYellowHammers · 25/09/2026 10:42

I rarely use. I wash, towel dry and plait.

HearHareHere · 25/09/2026 11:20

Can’t believe how many replies this thread has had! cheers everyone 😊I too don’t believe that wet hair on a cold day makes you unwell, I just don’t like the cold though so try and dry before I have to go out 😎

I wash my hair in the evenings, but wouldn’t think twice about being seen in public with wet hair. Who cares??

Alexbob · 25/09/2026 15:33

Never use one and don't use a hairbrush either. I just wash and use a serum for curly hair then let it air dry.

RampantIvy · 25/09/2026 16:20

It seems that those of you who don't use a hairdryer either have very thick hair or curly hair, or both.

I have neither and my hair looks awful if I don't style it.

@Missj25 ours is 7 years old and never ices up. I think you have to look for one that is described as frost free then. Ours is a frost free fridge freezer.

WearingBeautifulShoes · 25/09/2026 16:39

No, because I have very curly hair and a hairdryer would make it abominably frizzy!
