Does anyone else not own a hair dryer?

Just reading the thread about the house seller wondering what to wear when doing viewings. She mentioned having wet hair and some PP are commenting on this. This led me to wonder about how many people are like me and have never owned a hairdrier. I’m 48. My mum had one when I was a child so it’s not as if I’ve never lived somewhere with one or had one used on my hair but as an adult I’ve just never seen the need for one. I don’t really like the way hair feels or smells after it’s been heat-dried.
Anyone else not own a hairdryer?
(p.s: I’m not even sure how to spell it 😂)

I have one, but I only use it when I’m going out and I need it dry quickly. I prefer not to use heat on it regularly. I have waist length thick hair.

Do those of you with no hairdryer no go out to work in the morning, or take kids to school? I wouldn't do either with wet hair. Mine takes about 4 hours to dry naturally.

In the olden days, before I retired, I would often drive to work with the window down or, in good weather, even the roof down.

I said emergency stain, you know the kind that has shown up on the perfect outfit you must wear that day (usually due to make up for me).

I don't wear make up 😂 would usually put this kind of outfit on just before leaving the house.

Loving all these creative uses for hair dryers! I once borrowed one from a colleague to stretch out a pair of leather shoes.

I own a Morphy Richards hairdryer manufactured circa 1959 and still in the (rather battered) original box. It still works just fine. I hardly ever use it these days, I just air dry my hair. But it was my mum's and I want to keep it.

Yes, I wash it every morning, wrap it in a towel while I’m getting dressed and doing make up etc, run some curl cream through it and it’s almost dry by the time I leave the house. If I washed it at night I’d have to wash it again the next morning because it would be so frizzy and tangled - and I can’t brush it because it would lose the curl and become a frizz ball!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/09/2026 10:10

I don't. But I don't own very much hair either.

Hotafternoon · 24/09/2026 10:15

I have two, if I didn't have a hairdryer, I'd never go out. My hair looks hideous if it's not blow dried. 😱

I have two of them in case the main one stops working so keep a reserve dryer at the back of the wardrobe.

MrsAvocet · 24/09/2026 10:22

I don't. I have ridiculously thick hair and it's boring and time consuming to blow dry it. I even hate having it done at the hairdressers who sometimes have 2 people drying it simultaneously to speed things up . When I had a hairdryer I never finished drying my hair anyway because I'd get bored part way through so when it broke about 25 years ago I didn't bother getting a new one.

daffodilandtulip · 24/09/2026 10:26

DD is 21 and never used one in her life. She’s away at uni now, fully hairdryerless.

Spidey66 · 24/09/2026 10:28

I do but don't often use it.

ThatLoudCat · 24/09/2026 10:33

I don't own one, or want to own one. I go out with wet hair all the time.

I use the hairdryer for warming socks and jeans on cold mornings, a quick blast makes them much easier to get on.

I wish I didn’t have to! My hair takes HOURS. I mean a full day to dry. Diffusing it dry takes 30-40 mins
my hairdresser uses 2 hairdryers on my hair

Every day is a school day. Have never heard of a blow dry bar before until this thread!

It’s one of the joys of my life. I’m here right now!

Of course I do. I just tie it up.

RampantIvy · 24/09/2026 10:54

I have just taken my own advice to "dust" behind my radiators with the hairdryer and I am gobsmacked at how slack my housekeeping must be given the amount of dust I have blown out 😬

Autumnallaround · 24/09/2026 10:57

I own one but don't use it all the time. But my scalp and hair smell musty/of bed if I don't dry it properly.

I hate having my hair dried at the salon. They make it flat and shiny and it smells of their over powering shampoo.

I like a bit of frizz in my hair!

A hairdryer is great for getting the dust out from behind radiators 😁

We're supposed to dust behind radiators?

ToadRage · 24/09/2026 11:07

I do own one but couldn't possibly tell you when I last used it. I usually wash my hair in the evening, tie it in pigtails and leave it to dry naturally over night. Can't be bothered with blow-drying and my husbandis usually asleep by the time I've finished washing my hair and the noise would wake him up.

If you have someone in your house allergic to house dust mites, then yes.

ExpertlyDecluttering · 24/09/2026 11:11

I do but I can't remember the last time I used it. I stick my hair in a microfibre turban for a bit after washing then take it off and let the hair dry naturally, takes 2-3 hours so I routinely go to work or out and about with wet hair. Just checked it now, 11.10, I washed it at 8.15 today and it is only very slightly damp at the roots. Mine is wavy/curly so blowdrying really isn't a great idea. When I had it very short I did used to blow dry it every day then but that was 20+ years ago now.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 24/09/2026 11:12

I can't imagine not having one. My hair doesn't look good left to air dry. Blowdrying gives it a bit of volume and stops it going frizzy.

sanityisamyth · 24/09/2026 10:48

Mine is too short to tie up but too thick to leave wet

I can't imagine not owning a hairdryer.

I have very thick, heavy straight hair which can take two or three hours to dry on its own.

What do you do if you have a cold? Three hours with wet hair in February, and I'd be coughing for a week.

Wet hair doesn’t make you ill, not even in February.
