Does anyone else not own a hair dryer?

Just reading the thread about the house seller wondering what to wear when doing viewings. She mentioned having wet hair and some PP are commenting on this. This led me to wonder about how many people are like me and have never owned a hairdrier. I’m 48. My mum had one when I was a child so it’s not as if I’ve never lived somewhere with one or had one used on my hair but as an adult I’ve just never seen the need for one. I don’t really like the way hair feels or smells after it’s been heat-dried.
Anyone else not own a hairdryer?
(p.s: I’m not even sure how to spell it 😂)

I don't.

mindutopia · 24/09/2026 07:19

I don’t own one. I’m sure I must have like 20 years ago, certainly at some point in my life, for emergencies. But my hair has always air dried. My dd also doesn’t use one.

Meadowfinch · 24/09/2026 07:22

I can't imagine not owning a hairdryer.

I have very thick, heavy straight hair which can take two or three hours to dry on its own.

What do you do if you have a cold? Three hours with wet hair in February, and I'd be coughing for a week.

I don’t. My hair’s fine with a towel rub & then air drying.

Although when I got caught in a torrential downpour on holiday recently, the hotel room hair dryer was very useful for drying the insides of my trainers.

MagpiePi · 24/09/2026 07:24

I’ve got one and used it to get some vinyl window stickers off the other day, but I can’t remember the last time I used it to dry my hair as it makes it go all frizzy.
My grandmother gave it to me for my 21st birthday and I’m 58 now!

parietal · 24/09/2026 07:24

I don’t. I have fine short hair that dries fast so why would I?

RampantIvy · 24/09/2026 07:25

A hairdryer is great for getting the dust out from behind radiators 😁

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 24/09/2026 07:26

Well every day is a school day. Never thought I’d see someone not even own one.

I let my hair air dry most of the time but it does look more “done” if I use a hairdryer and round brush (or my new discovery, a hot brush!)

And sometimes I need it because I don’t want to go to bed or leave the house with wet hair. Can’t imagine ever not having one.

Ooh!

Growlybear83 · 24/09/2026 07:28

I don’t think I’ve owned a hair dryer in the last 40 years. Ive got waist length wavy hair which I’ve always left to dry naturally.

jksiiuidjuf · 24/09/2026 07:36

Wow honestly that blows my mind. I do mostly dry my hair, when I don’t it’s a state, the only thing I can do with it is scrape it back.

jksiiuidjuf · 24/09/2026 07:36

And what do you do when you have an emergency stain to clean off and dry your clothes?!

HearHareHere · 24/09/2026 07:37

This is really interesting (in a boring kind of way 😂). I also have very long, quite thick hair but just let it air dry. I only wash it once or twice a week usually and time the wash with being indoors so not usually out in the cold. In the summer I’d brush it in the sun and let it dry that way. Thanks for the replies!

I don't, but I have in the past.

Topseyt123 · 24/09/2026 07:41

I have one that was bought for me as a Christmas present many years ago. My DDs sometimes use it but I never do.

I really can't be arsed with drying my hair. I just brush it and go. Yes, I do even go out with it still wet. I can't see the issue.

Selfseedpoppies · 24/09/2026 07:42

I used to when I was a teenager. Not owned one for many years. Me, DD18 and DS16 all have long curly hair. We use a hair turban wrap thing then air dry. Drying with heat makes our hair frizzy.

terrifyingtoes · 24/09/2026 07:42

I use mine everyday 🫣. I’m quite routine/ritualistic and it just makes me feel good and ready to face the day.
Hairdryer and kettle - my two small electric essentials 😆
If you wouldn’t use it - no point in having one gathering dust, although as others have mentioned can be handy for other things and I’d also expect guests would appreciate one if you have any staying over

Harrysmummy246 · 24/09/2026 07:43

There is a hairdryer in our house, that my mum didn't want. It's never used on hair, but occasionally for providing heat to fit things together e.g. my greenhouse irrigation

So umm, no and yes?

BitOutOfPractice · 24/09/2026 07:44

I have one but not used it for years. I have a subscription at a blow dry bar.

🤣 Wet hair /being cold has no effect on a cold or illness. A cold is a virus!

OneOpalOwl · 24/09/2026 07:48

I love the feeling of clean, freshly dried hair! My hair is quite fine, it looks greasy and my scalp gets weird if I don’t use the hairdryer. It also takes so so long to air dry! I do air dry/part air dry sometimes but it’s the hair dryer most days.

Tallestone · 24/09/2026 07:49

I do have a hair dryer that when Dd was little I used to use. I never use it because I have curly hair that looks better air dryed. Now she's older she's realized her hair looks the same if she drys it or not. Lucky for her perfectly straight hair if she dries it or not. I'm so jealous

I get changed.

LondonLass2026 · 24/09/2026 07:54

I've always used one. My hair used to be extremely thick and long, up until I was 40. It used to take over 24 hours to dry naturally if I did try.

Since hitting 40 (which also led to me putting on 2 stone with the exact same diet and workout routine) my hair also drastically thinned. But now if I don't blow dry, my hair looks thin, frizzy and wispy. If I do blow dry, it looks much thicker and frizz free.

So I will be hanging on to my hairdryer!

user1476613140 · 24/09/2026 07:56

I use a hairdryer to dry my fringe. And leave the rest of my long hair to dry naturally. I will use it more often in the winter months though.
