If you take food on holiday what do you take?

I have a friend who always takes PEK and corned beef to make sandwiches. I mocked her, then was so happy when we went away and after being by the pool all day we could have a little sandwich on the balcony before going out.

DP and I are going away in November and for some reason TUI has given us about 10 suitcases each. I’m used to trying to cram everything into an under seat bag. But this time I’ve got checked baggage, carry on luggage, and a personal item. Don’t know what to do with it all! So I’m going to check a suitcase and take snacks.

If you do this, what do you take?

If you don’t and you think it’s ridiculous that’s fine but of no interest at all.

Teabags, the crisps and chocolate I like, nuts, my favourite yoghurt.

I ONLY holiday in this country though, if going abroad I would only take tea bags.

FancyKitten · 21/09/2026 17:42

I usually take airplane snacks, but not holiday snacks. I like hitting the local supermarket, once there! I’ll pack oatcakes, pretzels, a banana. And teabags, of course!

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · 21/09/2026 17:43

Gluten free pasta and bread for the kids, just in case!

SeraphionLightbringer · 21/09/2026 17:45

We take the robinson’s squeezy squash bottles, and individually wrapped pain au chocolat so we’ve got something to nibble on whilst we’re waiting for the plane.

MaryIngallsRibbons · 21/09/2026 17:45

Tea bags

MaryIngallsRibbons · 21/09/2026 17:47

I’ve also been known to take my own mug as I hate those thimbles that they try and pass off as coffee cups in hotels.

FCCRULES · 21/09/2026 17:47

Tea bags is a good shout! I know lots of people enjoy a foreign supermarket but I hate shopping in holiday.

What’s PEK?

YourAmberExpert · 21/09/2026 17:48

What on earth is PEK

PumpkinSpicedFattie · 21/09/2026 17:49

Chocolate, especially when we go to America!

Needs to be in a sandwich with salad cream and I don’t how any adult in the UK doesn’t know what it is, but feel huge sympathy for them.

PEK UK

PEK | Quality Canned Meats

Since our launch over 40 years ago, PEK canned meats have been known and loved in households all over the UK for their high quality and great taste.

Tea bags / plane snacks / some sort of muesli bars.
On my first girls holiday abroad my mum made me take a whole edam cheese (a giant one)
We actually did eat it!

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 21/09/2026 17:50

PEK is chopped pork in a tin.
Teabags for me too, also long life almond unsweetened milk and sweeteners.

Wonderknicks · 21/09/2026 17:51

Tea bags.
When the kids were little we used to take pasta & stir in sauce if we were arriving late to a self catering holiday. Sometimes those little squeezy squash bottles. I love a foreign supermarket!

I’m tempted to push the boat out and pre order myself a full English for the plane. We depart at 9am so it would be good timing.

Teabags and a home made fruit cake, the sturdy sort! Good for emergency breakfast, afternoon pick me up etc

I've never heard of it! Is it like spam?

reluctantbrit · 21/09/2026 17:52

Tea bags
A pack of cereal bars, chocolate or some biscuits in case we get the munchies on the plane
Any leftovers are normally eaten at one point during the holiday.

We always pop into a supermarket even when we aren't self-catering to get some more biscuits/chocolate. We don't do AI anymore so no more unlimited snacks.

No idea, I’ve never had spam.

it very much depends on what time I’m arriving at the location and what will be available. I don’t tend to take much but if I’m arriving after 8pm and before shops open for the day then I’ll take tea/coffee/powdered milk/sugar and a squeezy squash pod, also some ambient temperature snacks like individually wrapped brioche, protein/cereal bars, crisps, dried fruit/nuts to get us through to the shops opening.

Myfridgeiscool · 21/09/2026 17:55

A travel sized jar of marmite, coffee, lactose free milk portions. Need a brew!

Bjorkdidit · 21/09/2026 17:55

Another one who takes teabags (and a mug) because abroad tea is almost always shit and expensive and we always have loads of teabags at home so why not?

I don't take other food as such but I always make sure I have all my toiletries so I don't have to buy more.

But I do bring things home that I like, eg tinned fish, crisps in my hand luggage, spices, tiny little pasta shapes that are hard to find here. Also, weirdly, we cannot find bin bags in the UK that fit our kitchen bin, but Spanish bin bags are perfect and quite cheap so I normally get a couple of rolls of those. Plus Mercadona, my favourite Spanish supermarket, does really good plastic tubs, eg reusable yogurt pots etc, so sometimes some of those.

I'm also thinking of getting a couple of bottles of bargain Tanqueray gin on the way out next time to bring home, because they're 2 litres for £25 in duty free and about twice that in supermarkets. They'll almost certainly survive coming back in the hold wrapped in beach towels etc.

We’ll be arriving around 2pm but want to dump our stuff and head straight out for the match, so we won’t be going to any shop. The next day we’ll eat by the pool but I’ll fancy snacks whilst getting ready and having a drink on the balcony before we go out.

Kids snacks, cereal, Lacto free milk all for kids i wouldn’t take anything if am going away without kids

Autumnallaround · 21/09/2026 17:56

I take my favourite chocolate 90% from Waitrose. Nothing else comes close.

Also PACT ground decaf/full caff coffee in the correct grind for my aeropress. I am not happy with coffee from French presses or those crappy capsule machines.

Anything else though, no. I bloody love the first trip to the supermarket in Italy or France. I fact I love it so much I drive there on my own and leave DH to 'rest' after the journey, so I can stare at all the wonderful foods. Like a whole aisle in Leclerc dedicated to confit or a whole fridge section full of carrot salad. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
