How can we increase respect for women

Flufffluff11 · 19/09/2026 13:00

I've had a lot of chats with male friends and acquaintances about this lately.

A lot of them told me that boys are taught to disrespect girls, from many influejces, from a young age to a point where they don't see women as human.

So if a woman tries to say how life needs to be improved for women. If she tries to talk to men about feeling uncomfortable or scared on a walk alone through a town for example, men don't listen because their brain automatically thinks of the woman "as not even human" . They are also under pressure to look manly in front of each other, and some of them do this by disrespecting women in front of other men

Again, not all men. But the crime rate against women is huge. Men are not going to change, as it doesn't affect them negatively. I'm really interested in talking to other women about this.

How can we raise respect of women in society, in general?

I have always worked full time and have enjoyed some career success. I noticed how once I sat on the exco of my company and earned a decent amount, men seemed to treat me differently.

frozendaisy · 19/09/2026 21:00

We need to promote men who are decent.

And also encourage masculinity without the toxic.

It’s ok to be male.

But you look at our leaders, the president of the US for example. Many women voted for him even with him saying on video “grab them by the pussy”. Even removing the manosphere for a moment - being toxic has got him promoted to arguably the most powerful job in the western world.

The message to young men and boys is difficult to argue when the world seems to be voting in hardline masculine leaders.

The world is becoming a pressure cooker for frustrated violence. You can feel it. Why would pupils in school listen to teachers when they can see that the job market is precarious and normal milestones driving, moving out of your parent’s house, getting a steady ok paid job, perhaps having some money for fun whilst you are young, - these stepping stones to adulthood and responsibility are being swept from under everyone’s feet.

In these circumstances people will try to assert their power over others - that includes physically - that can and often means women.

There are not consequences to curbing your desires because you have nothing to lose and think you never will.

Andrew Tate saying in court he didn’t actually own the supercars he pretended to, he rented them because for his business he needed to appear rich, could be a pivotal moment in exposing the fakeness of online content and how he was exploiting the young men who followed him as much as everyone else. Used correctly this could be the start of bringing that whole house of cards down.

I disagree that it's just about the individual. If it was, women wouldn't be disrespected and abused on such a large scale.

Boys and men are taught harmful things and are exposed to violent porn from a young age. Their whole gender needs to taught to respect women.

The first porn I ever saw, I was shown without my consent. I was in college and the boy next to me asked me to come over to his computer. He had a porn image open. It wasn't sex. It was an image of a woman shoving a metal kitchen utensil up her vagina.nshe was grimacing in pain. I was so shocked and he laughed. I saw it being sent round to other boys

This is what teenage boys were looking at, at the time

Edited

That is shockingly awful

It is, isn't it. There is a lot of violent porn on the internet that focuses on hurting women. Teenage males can access this at a young age

Only ever on MN do I read this utter nonsense.

We raise boys to respect people in the same way that we raise girls to respect people.

Any male or female who hasn’t been raised to respect others ends up very lonely!

It's the outside of the home influences, that you can't control like the Internet and socialisation. Men who disrespect women do not end up lonely because they get accepted by other men
Those that stick up for women get excluded.

FrippEnos · 19/09/2026 22:00

You can control what the internet shows in your own home and what is on your children's devices.

that other parenst can't be bothered is a major concern.

No child needs a smart phone.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 19/09/2026 22:06

I don't care. It's up to men to sort out among themselves not a women's talkboard. Sure as hell not going to have sorting out male violence and misogyny on my to do list. It's their problem and not our responsibility. I work in a male dominated field and none of them disrespect me.

Bit difficult to tell him anything for the last 58 years.

Jokes aside. I like the approach of standing up for our rights.

I am trying to make the world a better place for women a small bit at a time, while I am alive

Fully agree with not our responsibility, but it is our problem. We are the ones getting killed and raped, rarely the other way round. If men were going to fix it, they would have by now.

Children do need phones in order to have a social life. A lot of school work is based online. Misogyny existed before the easy access to porn so there is something more fundamental that needs changing. Women who dont watch porn can still have internalised misogyny so that has come from socialisation.

It wasn't meant literally as you well know, what was your point in saying that?

110APiccadilly · 20/09/2026 07:10

The UK Government has just launched classes in schools, which aims to teach boys to respect girls.

I am unconvinced that you can teach this in a class. I think it's something that has to be modelled and consistently applied in real life (e.g. if boys are talking disrespectfully on the playground, that should be dealt with straight away) rather than making people attend a class.

But to what extent schools are able to provide the modelling I'm not sure. It's a harder ask to consistently model good male-female relationships (in the broad sense, not romantic ones!) than it is to teach a class.

Smokeywater · 20/09/2026 07:36

Women don't support women. there is a problem with the younger generation of women being wholly wokeified - they are at the forefront of marches for LGBetc, trans rights - more so than men - they are the first to condemn JKRowling. I think part of the problem (as a very oldie) that they are protected too much from the world and sleazy men, horrible randy old men. I came across these as a teen when I worked in shops etc You learned who to avoid and how to avoid. So letting men into women's toilets for example - no way would you support this.
Just my theory

I generally agree, the younger generation not having the life experience to fully understand the dangers, but I’m not sure I agree they are protected from the sleazy old men. How is that done, and even if it is, isn’t that a good thing?

They aren't protected. But it's actually much better now than it used to be! Sleazy men these days can't get away with as much casual sexual assault, overt leering, unrestrained sexual remarks, uninvited evaluations or entire prime-time TV shows based on skanky men objectifying women.

It's obviously nowhere near good enough yet. And I agree, the main difference is life experience. As a wide-eyed teen in the 1970s, I was all in favour of the move towards unisex everything. I was as dumb as the young women supporting 'trans' everything now.

Hindsight is a great thing isn't it. If only I could go back knowing what I know now I would certainly have some satisfaction... I think the old gits partly pray on young women because they know they're nieve, and it isn't a level playing field as it would be with somebody their own age. They don't like strong/experienced women; they're threatened.

Still very rare occurrences, fortunately

Are you being serious? Or just deliberately goading? Or simply being obtuse?

2 women are killed each week in DV in the UK alone!

Educate yourself before posting shit on the internet forum!

OP, here’s an idea on how to effect change - internet access & posting on SM for general population should only be allowed after IQ & ethics tests😀
Manosphere will disappear overnight, win win

2 each week. Rare. Stop scaremongering. Most men will help people, the vast majority, in fact.

How many men have saved lives? In for example, the RNLI, fire crews, police, surgeons, nurses etc. You never seem to post those statistics.

Get off your computer and get out into your community if you want to help young men and women. I doubt you will and it’s best you don’t, in fact, because you are so hate filled and you’d rather sit there and post your hatred and insults towards men - and any woman who dares stand up for men. Like me.

You cannot teach respect if you aren’t respectful yourself. All you women repeatedly posting this man hate are disrespectful yourselves - you have no chance of anyone respecting you. You are prejudiced, ignorant and disgraceful. Please do not actually go anywhere near young men or boys, you are dangerous.

I’m very proud to be able to work with lovely young people.

You aren’t living in the real world, I’m afraid.

And what about the rate of rapes in the UK? Do you think that's acceptable

That doesn't make sense. We can use a computer and also be out in the community. I am on the computer now. I also volunteer with young people in my community

What do you think posting on MN will do to help that, then exactly? I shall save you the bother: NOTHING! You’ll probably reply with some nonsense about ‘awareness’ which only serves to insult woman; we are already aware, thank you!

I doubt very much that any of you man haters do anything to help young people in your communities. Why would you want to work with half of the human population in the world who you hate and don’t respect? No-one wants anyone around helping them who constantly talks about ‘dangerous, disrespectful’ men. It’s just pure hatred and disrespectful to men - and woman.

Try liking people. Try respecting them. Stop posting hatred towards half of mankind who are for the most part kind and good.

@Flufffluff11 if these really are your ‘friends’ (and I doubt it) then you have really weird friends. Get better friends or stop listening to this rubbish. Change the conversation because it doesn’t sound like a particularly interesting subject. They’re possibly alluding to Andrew Tate who any male knows is an absolute dick; I know not one male who doesn’t think so.

It's interesting how threads like this always attract lots of replies illustrating the problem.

If women would only shut up about being dismissed, devalued and abused by men! Everybody could carry on ignoring the problem, deferring to the male opinion as normal. So much better, eh 😏

As to murder rates: the two a week are are overwhelmingly killed inside a home or residential setting by men they are or were close to. More men are murdered, not by their wives, girlfriends and mothers. Men are killed by men. See the common factor here?
