For me:

cruising - no, you’re on a cruise

flexitarian - also no, you’re a meat eater

OP posts:

"Across the pond"
"Indian summer"

A mumsnet specific one - "I'm going to go against the grain here"... shut up! No one cares!

We can 'broach' the subject

Ugh 😖

Just a standard English phrase tho, dates back to the 16th century. What's wanky about it?

Candleabra · 19/09/2026 15:08

Reach out
Curated (anything not a museum)
Pop (of colour etc)
[place name] you were wonderful
Glorious (about something very mundane)

Squirrelsnut · 19/09/2026 15:08

'Adding to the lore' = I'm doing this thing which I can tell people about afterwards.

Stop it!

Utterlybutter · 19/09/2026 15:09

Everything is "authentic" these days so say people who probably don't know what authentic is.

MyLifeHasChanged · 19/09/2026 15:09

@YourAmberExpert
This thread is about phrases/words we personally don't like.

And thats the one I dont like 🤷‍♀️

Dollymylove · 19/09/2026 15:13

"Bring your whole self to work"
Oh shit I forgot I my ears

Hubby

@BigBilly you’d know if you’ve seen them, they are all over Facebook / social media and once you’ve seen them you see them everywhere, just variations on the same format / style.

PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2026 15:40

This is completely a me being unreasonable thing, but I hate it when people say groceries. Grin

Just say “food” or “the shopping” or “I’m going up the Asda.”

ThaneOfGlamis · 19/09/2026 13:22

A myriad of.

Only ever used by people trying to show off about how clever they are whilst also being grammatically incorrect.

I have to confess this is one word I avoid using because I've heard it different ways. I've just (shamelessly) asked ChatGPT and apparently both ways are correct... I still don't really understand 😂

floopyboop · 19/09/2026 15:41

It's not exactly wanky but I can't bear it when people say "sweet spot". Makes my skin crawl get away from meeeeee

Xippy · 19/09/2026 15:42

“If that makes sense” - hear it all the time now, so annoying

Conniebygaslight · 19/09/2026 15:43

Safe space

DangerousLesions · 19/09/2026 15:47

Banter.
Hate it.

It comes from the ancient Greek word for ten thousand. You don't say a ten thousand of. Really gets to my pedantic nature!

Myremoteislost · 19/09/2026 15:50

Any name that a developer gives to their site. Chapel Green and Otter's Reach make me cringe with their wank factor.

NimbleHiker · 19/09/2026 15:50

I dislike the phrase picky bits as it makes me think of bogies.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 19/09/2026 15:54

Hantsmother · 19/09/2026 15:03

Passed instead of passed away
pickey bits

Passed away instead of died…
I agree picky bits is an awful phrase, but finger-food, light (or lite…) bites and of course nibbles are no better ;)

Joshing…makes me want to scream! As in ‘I’m just joshing’. aaaggghhhhhhh!!!! My lovely partner of 13 years has a tendency to say this and it is the only time that I ever have the urge to punch him squarely in the face. Reader, I do not and would not actually punch him under any circumstances . And to his credit he says it less frequently now…phew!

I’m 60, and we used this phrase a lot when I was a child!!

Sidebeforeself · 19/09/2026 16:03

These three I see a lot on MN and it sends me into a rage

”Way to xxxxx..” i.e. what a way to xxxx . Hate it . It’s lazy and silly and I was appalled when Janice Turner ( JANICE TURNER!) used it recently.

”That tracks..” for “that makes sense”. Actually, no it doesnt make sense!!!

People ending sentences with “much? Or no?” Usually when being sarcastic.

And I once saw “Way to make your friend feel bad much?” .I nearly had to put my head in the gas oven on reading that one.

Sidebeforeself · 19/09/2026 16:07

piscofrisco · 19/09/2026 13:42

Well you won’t like what I believe is going to be next in this category then…I was on holiday in a place with lots of Americans and they ordered drinks and meals with ‘can I do?’ ‘I think I’ll do …a tequila and a beer…’ ‘I’ll do the steak’ …. Please no.

Also

“I’ll take “..as in “Ill take a coffee” AAGH!

LacyRuby · 19/09/2026 16:09

It was 'lush' food or describing a room as 'lush', or 'he was lush'. Everytime I hear LUSH spoken I cringe.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 19/09/2026 16:14

No one comes round for something to eat or just stays the night.
they are all now “Hosted”
get over yourselves.

CalmClassic · 19/09/2026 16:27

Good job! Ugh, usually said with a high pitched voice good jaaaaaab
