EU chief Ursula von der Leyen says she wants to open the door for Canada to become the bloc's first associate member.

Australia says it could follow.

Is Burnham still meeting Carney today?

This is fantastic news. Always had a good feeling about Carney.

Interview with a woman in Piddington who has a different view and is being othered

Saw that last night on Newsnight and thought she was brave in saying that. It's always good to have a voice and to have it heard.

Othering is a form of social outacsting and is to be abhorred by all.

BestIsWest · 16/09/2026 11:15

Not sure Burnham is still meeting Carney but there was talk about John Healey being in talks with Canada about joining the Global Defence Bank that Carney wants to set up. Sounds sensible to me.

SerendipityJane · 16/09/2026 11:32

Llttledrummergirl · 16/09/2026 10:54

I saw that interview. My heart goes out to them.
Learning that people you have talked to, may have had in your home, chatted with in schools actually have such abhorrent views must be really hard. It would make you second guess your entire history there.

That's how civil wars go, if you know your history. Neighbours you have known all your life happily kill you and your family.

DuncinToffee · 16/09/2026 11:35

Burnham is meeting Carney today in Liverpool.

Such a brave woman

It's a very white village going by the photos.

Let them leave and wish them good luck. They can have their hard border.

Reminds me of the Free town project.

Will the small leafy town now be "invaded" by squirrels rather than migrants

The Town That Went Feral | The New Republic

The Town That Went Feral

When a group of libertarians set about scrapping their local government, chaos descended. And then the bears moved in.

@Cheguevarahamster that’s an excellent book, really gives a good insight into where libertarian ideas lead you when you carry them to extremes.

Going to put it my reading list!

Inadvertently caught a little bit of Jeremy Vine in Radio 2 ‘discussing’ Piddington. The last caller said something about ‘1200 murderers and rapists’ - even Vine had to gently challenege that with ‘they won’t all e criminals’ and the caller then said ‘no most of them won’t be but we don’t want even one’ or words to that effect. But the go to thing to say now seems to be that ALL asylum seekers are young male violent criminals. Makes me sick.

It's no wonder the Reform fans on MN are posting ever more batshit outlandish things. You can smell the despair.

Will never forget the dolphin pod that swam alongside the boat coming back from Rathlin Island. Fantastic sight.

A couple of posters were trying to blame 'migrants' for the tragic death of baby Noah saying it was all over SM as 'evidence' - it's really worrying what some people believe
Sad

That doesn't surprise me, sadly. Everytime something awful happens there are people who jump to blaming migrants. You see it on here and FB etc. too.

Edited

That's very true - tho' being blamed for an unsupervised toddler drowning in a lake does feel particularly extreme to me

You're right, it is.

That poor family.

That whole thread was an absolute bin fire. There must come a point when a thread has so many deletions that it should just be taken down.

But, if someone is so far down the rabbit hole that they have to squeeze asylum seekers in to a completely unrelated story, then they are not going to listen to sense.

Mnhq should have deleted the thread. It was a disgrace.

It even went against their unwritten rules of not keeping threads up that are like 'swiss cheese'

Clearly getting the desired clicks tho'

Here is Farage's reaction to the brave woman speaking out about the Piddington racism.

I imagine a lot on MN did similar

It’s beyond me how any woman can vote for him, that’s twice in as many weeks he’s laughed at a woman in distress. Vile misogynist.
