I’m really glad Rayner’s done that. She’s true to a sector she really knows about. It’s also logical with Burnham’s focus on social care. You don’t improve it without the care workers.

Someone should have told that to the developers when our road was laid down in the 1930s...
Picture of our road during the 2014 flood. Repeated since. We've had four 'hundred year events' in the last 30 years.

Crikey, that's awful. I saw that a load of houses that were flooded a few years ago in Scotland are going to be torn down.

At least our 1930s developer built our house over 100m above sea level.

Not drilled into the detail, but it leaves me underwhelmed. I'm also a little cats bum face about it's reliance on "new builds".

It's probably just me having standards, eyes and a brain, but a tour of (checks notes) over 30 new builds a few years back only served to convince me that they are exclusively shit.

No amount of pissing around with the money side of things will mitigate the issue of not enough habitable properties. And the issue of not enough habitable properties is an engineered situation caused by skewing the free market to ensure landlords and housebuilders don't have to suffer too much.

New house builds means that young people will be able to provide for their home care needs when they get to an older age and require 24/7 care. Most of them will have children who'll pass along the conveyor belt.

countrygirl99 · 26/09/2026 22:10

The houses that get flooded in our village are 200 plus years old and on the High Street. The new builds are all fine.

God, that is awful. Was your house flooded?

Police evacuated homes near RAF Fairford, a U.S. air base in England, and arrested several men over suspected explosive offenses. The base is used by the American forces during the war with Iran.

Breaking news story.

That is very scary. Foiled terrorist attack?

PickAChew · 27/09/2026 09:27

Hopefully not the first of many.

Portadown looks like it could get messy.

Happy Sunday :/

Depends if the terrorists are going around killing innocent schoolchildren ?

Or are they protesting an illegal war ?

I don't jump at the dog whistle word "terrorism" any more. Give me details. Give me facts.

Our house is fairly modern (replaces an old low lying bungalow) so is built well above the 1947 flood levels with a hollow under the house. The house hasn't flooded, the garage does of course, and front and back gardens both completely flood leaving the house as an island with water up the walls on all four sides. Other people on the road are not so lucky. We have a river at the bottom of the garden so it's to be expected.

It says something about the current climate that my first thought was that it was to do with protests about asylum seekers.

Mine was initially, too.

TemperanceWest · 27/09/2026 10:06

Glad your house wasn't been flooded, but it sounds like a boat could be useful @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats

An update on City of Sanctuary protest and our counter if of interest.
Fortunately, massively outnumbered them - we did good. We had a s14 put on day before so we shouldn’t have been at the Peace Gardens but too late to tell everyone so for safety for our group we remained. The protestors were surrounded by counters - but police worked hard to let them March - looked like a presidential bloody motorcade - used the horses to get through too.
We had an Anglican priest gave a great speech and challenged ethno Christianity.

We did pretty good I think but actually a lot of the media I’ve seen implies more equal numbers when we reckon it was 100:500

Re the kids - the ‘auditors’ somehow get themselves press passes so they can agitate us from the neutral space - as journos they aren’t restricted to space - one looked about 12 or younger - pointed this out to Bobby who said it wasn’t his job to check press passes 😬 - family business I guess!

Some very much older houses in Ynysybwl have just been purchased for demolition because of increased flooding. Lots of places that used to be safe aren't these days.

I didn't. The low life scum that like to terrorize women and children wouldn't be seen without 1000 miles of any real jeopardy. (In this case being run over by a US serviceperson).

Here's what the algorithm threw up today. Spoiling me ... "Small Blokes Crisis" and "Far Right Frank Spencer" (which appearances suggest the lady is too young to have seen originally).

It would make my day to lean she is a secret MNetter 😎

I thought he did very well today at making his case about social care, and freeing up beds in the NHS.

It will be interesting to see what happens with flooding in our village this winter. The first 20 years we probably had 4 or 5 floods only 1 if which caused damage to houses. In the last 5 years we've had at least one road closure a year, 3 last winter. But the Wildlife Trust purchased a rewilded site that the brook passes through before the village and this summer they have put in some leaky dams to create different habitats. Hopefully that will slow the flow into the village. The problems happen when a high flow meets a low bridge and it backs up.

BestIsWest · 27/09/2026 11:37

We’re on a hill but were marooned a couple of times last winter as the roads at the bottom were flooded. I do remember this being a problem in the 1980s but a lot of work including river bank reinforcement was done. It’s definitely getting more frequent. Doesn’t help that the road at the bottom of the hill in two directions is virtually sea level and marshy as we’re on an estuary; one of them is regularly flooded at high tide.

SerendipityJane · 27/09/2026 11:38

People with long memories will recall there was an agreement that the insurance companies would not refuse to provide flood cover (i.e. we all pay for it in our premiums) while the government improved flood defences.

And - as my boss at the time mentioned in a slide - the moment that happened the government realised it would never need to build a flood defence again.

Too cynical ?

placemats · 27/09/2026 11:46

Unfortunately after a very long period of dry weather, successive heatwaves and very little rain, river beds react by forming a waxy residue like surface that acts exactly like concrete. Hydrophobic soil is the name.

Flooding therefore can be a problem after relentless downpours.
