If you were ruler for a day. What minor thing would you fix.

I am not here talking stuff that would have long lasting political impact or getting rid of people permanently I am talking the smaller irritants that makes your eye roll and you are like "someone should do something about it"

Well for one day you are that someone what would you do?

For me. Potholes on my road and roads near by to be fixed (I would say all but I dont think 1 day would be enough time) but as many as they could manage in each city for the day

Also I would have someone drive around the towns cutting back hedges that are 1/2meter to 1 across the pavement. I know they would look shite after butthat's my minor irritant.

I would ban mobile phones on loudspeaker in public and kids with tablets and no headphones.

dontcookwontcook · 10/09/2026 08:07

i would ban using AI for unnecessary shit such as responding to internet posts. Like why is there AI responses on mumsnet? Just paragraphs of shit with bolded texts and bulletpoints. at work I have clients just responding to every contact with a long drawn out AI email response when a line will do. I like ChatGPT but Jesus Christ, stop using it to respond to everythinnnnng

TheoreticallyAdult · 10/09/2026 08:09

I would ban smoking and vaping everywhere except private property.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 10/09/2026 08:10

Fast and slow lanes on pavements.

Every house or shop legally required to pick up litter in its immediate vicinity.

Taser people who litter.

Bank holiday in the autumn, as the stretch between August and Christmas is too long.

dontcookwontcook · 10/09/2026 08:12

… and 4 day week!

This.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 10/09/2026 08:14

Drivers who don't drive AT the speed limit would be banned from driving.

TheProvincialLady · 10/09/2026 08:15

I would reintroduce hard labour. Eligible crimes would include having one of those cars that makes a stupid noise, dropping litter and being a noisy neighbour.

ThirdStorm · 10/09/2026 08:15

Highway Code and recent tweaks to pedestrian right of way.

Oilburnadvice · 10/09/2026 08:17

I would make all the grass verges have neat edges all trimmed naively

I would make it an offence to pause in a doorway/walkway

DearlyDiego · 10/09/2026 08:18

I would check the qualifications and experience of whoever works in the roads planning department. Do they think to check to see if there are other works needed? Maybe they could align the ironworks/electric cabling/fibre works all together while there's a massive hole, instead of re-opening said hole 4 separate times.

Do they have shares in traffic cones and temporary lights?

Why do they allow projects to overrun so significantly in duration and budget?

(can you tell that I've just endured another horrific commute into work?!)

Highway Code and recent tweaks to pedestrian right of way.

You would do what with them? Tighten or get rid of or?

I would bring back the stocks for littering, and place them near fast-food outlets as a warning.

I'd love to see you doing 60 down the single track lane next to my house.

dontcookwontcook · 10/09/2026 08:22

and everyone with a garden has to look after their garden and make it look nice or at least neat.

I genuinely think that should be the law. Anyone playing (imposing) their bloody music on neighbours should be fined £1k a time, taken directly from their wages/benefits. Agree with the phones/tablets on loudspeaker too, immediate fine or thrown off the train/bus. I don’t understand why people think it’s ok to annoy others.

FancyKitten · 10/09/2026 08:24

An invisible person who goes around snipping the thread at the back of all jackets with coat tails stitches still intact. Or a tiny nail scissors with every jacket, in with the spare button.

Meadowfinch · 10/09/2026 08:25

I'd allow all local residents to use the local tip (1.5 miles) instead of being required to drive a 34 mile round trip.

Hampshire County Council, it is not beyond the wit of man to set up a mutual arrangement between you and West Berkshire. If your departments were run by women, it would have been done years ago. You are bleedin' useless.

frozendaisy · 10/09/2026 08:25

I would open headlight adjusting centres (long open hours I would pay the workers well for their time) and every car would have their dipped lights of a reasonable brightness and directed towards the roads

Insurance would become invalid if you didn’t get them checked and adjusted within a month (or as soon as you returned from holiday/illness say)

crackofdoom · 10/09/2026 08:26

I would ban any trimming/ poisoning of valuable wildlife habitat in our towns and cities "because it looks neat".Learn to enjoy the birds, bees and wildflowers you soulless tosspots.

I would also commandeer all golf courses and restore them for nature.

frozendaisy · 10/09/2026 08:26

And ban plastic grass

AdventureCode · 10/09/2026 08:27

Have a national clean up our motoways campaign, our grass verges are disgusting and quite frankly embarrassing, there's not a stretch of motorway from Dover to Suffolk where i just drove through litter free.

ThePurpleShark · 10/09/2026 08:29

I would bring the stocks in train and tube stations, for all the faffers at the top and bottom of escalators, and who don't have their ticket/phone ready at the gates.

I'll make all trains "silent trains" with heavy fines for loud music, loud tablets, phones and conversations.

I'll make the working week a 4 days week

101jobs · 10/09/2026 08:32

Outdoor smoking areas must be a completely separate area, NOT a roofed area attached to the main building. The roof forces the smoke back into the main building and I still end stinking of other peoples cigarettes.

People must pay for their trees to be cut on their neighbours side. Your tree, your cost!

Screamingabdabz · 10/09/2026 08:37

Yeah litter… that’s just a daily infuriation. I regularly litter pick around our village and the sheer moronic selfishness and laziness is mind blowing.

Also people who walk side by side on pavements and make no consideration for a lone individual walking in the opposite direction - where do you expect me to go you fuckwits? In the gutter?

Sorry I know MN froth about this, but I would expect all dogs to be on leads in public and banned from shops, cafes and restaurants.
