Would you be comfortable if your daughter was assigned a male nursery worker?

Out of interest, how would you feel if your daughter was assigned a male member of staff in an early years setting to provide intimate care? Would you feel just as comfortable if a female member of staff was assigned?

Some may be okay with it, some may not - interested to see the general consensus.

Best get rid of all the boys as soon as they reach puberty as well.

I mean, you're not wrong!

Not sarcasm at all. Genuinely, how can anyone believe that contract with men for children and young people is worth the risk? Let's face it, it would probably be better if contact with men in general was reduced for us all.

So these children you’re so keen to protect, presumably includes boys, but as soon as they’re 18 you assume they’re all perverts?

Don’t be daft OP.

I was really talking about the girls. Not sure I care much about the boys to be honest

What? You don’t care about the boys? So you’re worried about your kids but not others. Nice.

Just realistic. Can you honestly say that men improve the world in any way? Pretty much everything bad can be laid at their feet, and we would be better off having a lot less to do with them

mumumental · 04/09/2026 11:25

No. I wouldn’t.

So, would you be happy with women only child care.

Because if you are, you're going back to the "... a woman's place is in the kitchen..." script.

Men won't be allowed to provide care for the children, so it will be down to the woman to stay at home, not have any career, not have a life outside looking after babies, nappies, feeding, bath time, bed time etc etc

The general consensus of opinion on here is that people are not happy with men being 'hands on' with baby/child care as the risks are just too high - any man has the potential of being a child molester.

So we can't have it both ways - we can't complain when men stay away from baby/child care or insist that nappies and bath time should be a "woman's role"

Can't complain when men are staying away from nursery jobs and leaving it to women only

To be honest I think it would be better if men were kept away from society all together. Definitely better out of sight

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 04/09/2026 11:53

Absolutely not and I say that as someone who is personally very comfortable with male doctors, etc.

LilloLil · 02/09/2026 20:31

That might be how it’s supposed to be but everyone who has ever worked in a nursery knows that those is not what happens a
l of the time. I’ve seen supply change nappies, I’ve seen adults take children inside when everyone is outside and there is no other adult free. And we all know the DBS system isn’t infallible.

I agree with this.

No, male staff should not be carrying out intimate care for young children.

Instead of the current ratios we have in nurseries the ratio's should be higher than they are to facilitate two members of staff to carry out intimate care.

sadly the reality is that the sector is struggling to recruit staff because of low wages and long hours, so in reality the above will never happen.

Men, absolutely have their place in childcare, but this should be out on the nursery floor encouraging and being involved in engaging play and learning activities with the children and not involved in intimate care routines. Again this won't happen because of the pressure and unfairness this would put on the rest of the female staff in the room team.

DBS and Safeguarding polices only go so far, they will not stop a determined abuser flexing their power and control over the most vulnerable- Young children, the elderly and adults with learning disabilities.

I say this as a former early years teacher and nursery area manager.

Does everyone feel the same about male NICU/PICU or even general paeds nurses? What about male paediatricians?

ETA: I'm a paeds nurse and have often provided intimate care to non verbal or preverbal children without parents or carers present mostly in specialist centres and wards but also on general paeds wards.

Edited

Yes. My daughter was in neonatal and I would not have allowed any male nurse or doctor to provide intimate care. However, luckily I was never faced with that situation anyway as I only came across female nurses. The male doctors never carried out nappy changes on the babies in every instance I saw, it was only the nurses who were all women. I was bed bound for 24 hours due to a haemorrhage after a c section and having a balloon inserted but after that, I was in neonatal and between me and her dad we didn’t leave her side.

Men are there to play, women are there to clean their mess is a great message for children.

Better than being sexually abused and scarred for life. However, Vincent Chang abused the kids while they sat on his lap so that wouldnt have protected them.

Exactly my point. Men are just too untrustworthy to have anything to do with than is absolutely necessary. Definitely they should absolutely be kept away from female children and young people

NoisyBrickDog · 04/09/2026 13:23

Are great - so I shouldn't moan when husband refuses to change nappies, bath them, change them for bed etc - because that is woman's work. He can just go about his business of watching football and going to the pub.

And anyone that challenges him and says he is a lazy father is clearly wrong - he is actually very protective and not allowing any risk to come to his children.

At least I know my place!

But "men can be dangerous" is a very important lesson for them to learn.

Andrea Tate, is that you?!

TattyBluebell · 04/09/2026 23:52

This is really interesting.
I would be uncomfortable about a male member of staff changing my baby.. but I'm trying to fathom why we think like this.
I mean all members of staff are DBS checked right? Female members of staff could potentially abuse a child too, not just males. So does this mean that the gentle 18 year old son from a previous comment, can't change nappies when he starts working at a nursery. How is he more likely to abuse a child than an 18 year old female member of staff.
Interesting.. 🤔

PrincessFairyWren · 05/09/2026 00:14

There was a male worker at the child care center that my kids went to and I didn’t even think twice about it in relation to the quality of care or my kids safety. I do remember being a bit surprised when he started for about three seconds because it was rare to see a man working in childcare.

While I disagree strongly with the more let's just say anti-male sentiments on this thread if it is a case that banning men from nursery care prevents sexual abuse of very young children sets back women's rights to be 'equal' in the sense it erodes the bullshit that men and women are just the same, then so f*ing be it.

I really don't.

Nobody can be so unaware surely. It’s mind boggling.

Is there any woman alive who just lives their life without being conscious of the threat of men. I walk my dog every day in a forest alone. I do it despite being scared sometimes, not because I’m unaware. When I see another person in the forest I don’t think “how is he more likely to murder me than a female”.

Men are vastly more likely to sexually abuse children than women.
An Australian study a couple of years ago found that men who had sexual attraction towards minors were 3 times more likely to work with children than men who had no attraction to minors.
