Would you be comfortable if your daughter was assigned a male nursery worker?

Out of interest, how would you feel if your daughter was assigned a male member of staff in an early years setting to provide intimate care? Would you feel just as comfortable if a female member of staff was assigned?

Some may be okay with it, some may not - interested to see the general consensus.

I did and I was comfortable with it. He was also DS's keyworker when he was a baby too.

I worked in a nursery for years and only ever had a couple of male practitioners, they were both excellent. If you’re a parent, speak to your nursery manager, they will be very sympathetic. If your son really wants a career in childcare, I think he should go ahead. There are so many single parents nowadays, me included, that it’s great for the children to see males in the caring profession.

Vanessa George is the only one of those who abused nursery children - so that's one female nursery worker in 17 years.
Those three male nursery workers were all caught just in the last few years, and male workers only make up 3% of the childcare workforce.

It's not the case that women never abuse children, or even that female nursery workers never abuse children - but it is the case that the tiny number of male nursery workers commit the vast majority of sexual abuse against nursery children.

I pity male family /friends if your mindset is like this....

Do you never behave more cautiously around men than women?
You wouldn't choose the late night train carriage with some women in it over the one with just a group of men?
You never told your children to go and find a nice lady or a mum with a buggy if they got lost?

I pity those posters with a poor grasp of statistics, whose only recourse is to yell ' Myra Hindley' when faced with the cold hard facts of male sexual abuse.

Just asked DH his opinion. He's a no to male nursery workers. So no one need feel terribly sorry for the men in our lives.

But in Australia the 3% of men who are nursery workers have been behind really horrific cases of abuse, in one case involving hundreds of children.

Not really no, I'd be cautious of both in that scenario, nice lady? How do you know they'd be nice? Strangers could be dangerous regardless, I would say go to security /police etc but hang on I'd have to say don't go to them if male? I think people have a sad mindset to think men are predators, but the saddest thing is you never trust your dad, brother, husband, uncle, grandpa etc.. I can't live in a world where I believe this.

Most women are more worried about being raped by a man than a woman.

Surely working in childcare and being a teacher are very different vocations, though - with different qualifications, different responsibilities, different working days and different goals?

Or do you think that primary school teachers are basically just there to look after the children and not to actually teach them?

I refuse to believe that you would ask your children to approach a male stranger rather than a woman if they were lost. A male policeman, yes. If you were walking down a dark alley, would you be warier of a woman or a man?

But this faux naivete- ooh do you think your dad is a rapist- is so annoying on a women's site.

Think going round in circles! I have more faith in the male population, I believe there's as many bad woman as men and to say you wouldn't have a male nursery worker is just so sad

You do know that, despite being more likely to be imprisoned than men for the same crime, women make up only 4% of the prison population, and about 3% of those convicted of sex crimes?

If that suggests to you that men and women are equally bad then yes, as a PP says, you don’t really understand statistics.

No. I never allowed any male to provide care for my young children other than their father, so I certainly wouldn't let some random man do it.

Your completely unfounded faith in men, despite all the statistics saying you're wrong and that men are far more likely to commit violent and sexual crimes than women, is both adorable and frightening.
