Happening to a friend of mine son and she’s not feeling too comfortable about it, the 21 year old was previously in. Three yearlong relationship with someone a year or two older then her

I dated a 23 year old when I was 20, I was a student and he was graduated and in his first job. It was in the 00s and nobody batted an eye.
We ultimately split up but it wasn’t because of issues to do with the age gap

20 and 23 isn’t an age gap.

You could have 2 people of exactly the same age with different relationship experience. Either way it’s not a problem.
Girls typically do mature faster than boys but your partner doesn’t have to be of the same maturity level as you.
I think this is completely normal. You like someone based on who they are not their age. Big age gap relationships can be difficult but a 3 year age gap when both are adults is not a big age gap in my opinion.

I wouldn't worry too much however I do feel in the younger years age gaps can seem larger than say 28.and 33 etc .

They’re both adults and capable of working it out for themselves

So no one is really answering the question, which is
do you think 18 year old girls mature faster than boys or is this just what’s expected of girls to be more mature ?

Which categorically wasn't your question. You had plenty of responses to your actual question.

I would think it was none of my business unless he was moving her in to my house.

HoraceCope · 01/09/2026 09:47

my own ds had a similar relationship and i admit i thought it odd, i thought her odd for going after someone younger.

Why? Attraction doesn't happen relative to age? It's irrelevant between two adults. It doesn't happen only between two people of the 'right' ages. I do find your thinking odd.

Know plenty of 17 year olds that don't look like children.

Do you think this man looks 18?

Some still look like children and some look like 32 yr old fathers of two. There’s definitely a range. That’s the darts player isn’t it? I was shocked when I first found out his age.

It completely depends on the personalities involved, and even if she is more mature, so what? That could be a good influence on him.

As long as she's a decent person and they treat each other well, there's really no issue here.

You're only going to drive your son away if you're this overbearing about his relationships.

You will need a new thread as that’s a completely different question.

I’ll answer it.

Yes, I do think on average that females mature more quickly. Science supports this. To oversimplify it:

”Neuroimaging data indicates that female brains generally reach full maturity roughly 1 to 2 years earlier than male brains.”

It's fine! If he wanted to go on a guys trip he would. Maybe he considers her a better option. Don't be so negative.
