Do you usually take a glass of water to bed?

New couple. One always takes a glass of water to bed. The other never does. Both think the other is strange (light heartedly). What is normal for you?

Yes. I maybe have a couple of sips before sleep. Then I chug it in the morning.

I think the bacteria from your mouth can make the water go a bit funny, especially if warm / room temp.

I don’t think that happens within 24 hrs…

SeaGlassDreamer · 30/08/2026 22:40

I take a 500 ml bottle and always finish that wishing I had another one. I do wee a lot but I don’t sleep anyway so not sure it makes much difference.

Freshrain · 30/08/2026 22:41

No, because I am mostly asleep when I am in bed, so have no need.

I would also no doubt fling an arm out and knock it over if I did so.

Orangery76 · 30/08/2026 22:45

I have hot water as my last drink of the day in bed (rock and roll) and usually have some left which sits on my bedside table but I rarely drink it during the night. It’s nice to know it’s there though just in case. Unless I drank it all when it was hot. In which case, no I have nothing. But if I’m awake I’m usually going to the toilet and just drink from the tap if necessary.
Anyone else like hot water as a drink? I find it strangely comforting and refreshing especially just before bed.

ElegantDress · 30/08/2026 22:48

No none of us (me, DH, two adult DCs). I don't need water when I'm asleep and have never discussed this with DH or the DCs but I assume they don't either. I don't think my parents have ever done this either, we certainly didn't growing up. I remember staying at a friend's house once and she left a little bottle of water on the bedside table and I thought it a bit odd.

Midlifecrisis2026 · 30/08/2026 22:49

I did until I found a spider floating in it (luckily it was alive and I put it outside)

BistoBear · 30/08/2026 22:51

I take a pint of water up to bed, will have a drink if I wake up during the night and my mouth is dry. Whatever’s left when my alarm goes off is downed in one before heading to walk the dogs, it’s a great way to start hydrating.

I don't, I wonder to the kitchen. The Stanley cup and ice is a great idea, might try it.

Cup with a lid here so I don't have to worry there's an insect in it in the dark

Me too.

This is so clever! I've used mine to water the plants sometimes but I enjoy the kettle plan.

Oh, yes, mine does end up on the peace lily occasionally too. 😁

Rhymetyme · 30/08/2026 22:55

I usually finish a 500ml bottle overnight. I remember taking a sippy cup of water to bed as a child! Maybe i don't drink enough during the day.

butofcourseyoudo · 30/08/2026 22:58

No. Baffled by how many wake up in the night! I just have a drink when I'm up in the morning, unless I'm ill!

Legomum789 · 30/08/2026 21:34

I used to keep a glass of water by my bed until I woke to find my dog drinking from it! Yuck!
I keep a glass in the bathroom now as I often get thirsty in the night (or is it just habit? I don’t know)

I have a little silicone cover to stop my cat from doing that!

Maomee · 30/08/2026 23:04

I usually take one but it's not an absolutely must. It often goes untouched unless I happen to get up for a wee or have a particularly long sleep..

So I never used to, when I got with my now DH he did, and I thought it was so strange! About 15 years in together I started taking water to bed, most notably because I was up breastfeeding in night, and I’ve continued to take water to bed since.
but yes originally I thought it bizarre to take water to bed, now I panic if I get in bed and realise I forgot my water 😂

I’m exactly the same! I didn’t take a glass of water to bed until DD was born almost 12 years ago. I breastfed for the first year, and drank so much water during that time. I couldn’t cope without a glass by the bed, which was often topped up during the night when I was up feeding her. DH has pointed out that it’s almost 11 years since I stopped breastfeeding, but I’m still taking the water to bed and now can’t settle without it, whether I drink it or not.

DH takes a cup of tea to bed; I have always thought that’s a bit unusual, after all who sips cold tea if they wake during the night?! But he’s happy, so who am I to judge?

Lovemycat2023 · 30/08/2026 23:08

I have a bottle in case I knock over the glass. Sometimes I wake up coughing in the night due to dry throat.

feellikeanalien · 30/08/2026 23:13

AbacusCat · 30/08/2026 21:44

Yes - actually a water bottle because if I use a glass my cats always start drinking it, despite having their own water-cooler downstairs.

I specifically fill the cat's water bowl before going to bed but she always comes up to try and drink from my water glass. I have to keep it covered.

MassiveOvaryaction · 30/08/2026 23:15

Always. I maybe have a sip of I wake in the night but mostly it's there for the morning. I have POTS and the cardiologist recommended chugging a pint before getting out of bed in the morning. Seems to help.

mrsmacmc · 30/08/2026 23:17

Yes a water bottle rather than a glass as I am a restless sleeper and have swiped everything off bedside table before in my sleep

ItsFreakingHot · 30/08/2026 23:20

I always drink a full glass before bed, just as I go down, as if I don't I wake up desperately thirsty.
I drink a glass on waking as well.
Can't imagine going to sleep without at least having a few sips to get me through 8 hours.

Namechangedforspooky · 30/08/2026 23:21

Always take 2 glasses of squash to bed, usually 2 different flavours.
I don’t really remember to drink during the day, especially if I’ve been working. I would never bother taking water bottle with me during the day.

Usually drink a fair bit at bedtime then again in the night
I can see this is not the norm!

Utterlybutter · 30/08/2026 23:23

Not since I found a huge Giant House Spider in mine one morning. Have never got over the thought that I could have drunk that in the middle of the night.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 30/08/2026 23:31

Yes- pint of sparkling.

Hellet · 30/08/2026 23:33

Q2C4 · 30/08/2026 22:02

How do you cope without a bedside table?! I would seriously struggle without one. Where to put your glasses (admittedly not everyone wears them), phone, face creams etc….?! ☺️

I have a little pouch pocket that's attached next to the mattress. But I agree I need a bedside table, we got rid of them when we moved and just haven't got around to buying new ones.
