Can someone explain to me what is going on with the A66 crash and revenge killings?

I’m not understanding any of this. 5 young men were driving a car in the wrong land and hit an unmarked car head on, killing the two police officers driving it. That I understand.

Why are there now reports of a house being burned out, killing an older woman and a young child? Further hints of gangland violence. Why? Is it the families of the 5 men blaming each other, or other people?

That mother has got a lot to answer for. Poor parenting doesn't cover it. We do not want gang wars on our streets.

Her message was clearly an incitement as to what happened yesterday evening. As to the PP above, what drives these people to act so outside the usual social norms is first and foremost a parenting issue. Parents can be poor / working class and still want their kids to do well, or at least be polite and functioning members of society, and strive to make sure they are. These youths have been dragged up by parents who actively teach them to disrespect others / teachers / police / any form of authority whatsoever. Without the parents on board, the other agencies have no hope.

You have to wonder why Farage and his ghouls have had nothing to say. Probably because these are the types of voters they want. They'd have been all over this story if these thugs weren't white.

Yes. These are the voters they aim for. The ones who blame everyone else for their problems.

They are perpetuating this type of society.

What we need to one that addresses this from the core.

These lads weren’t born thugs. Their upbringing groomed them into it. And possibly their parents etc as well.

Thats not to deny there are t choices in life and they did choose their actions. But to understand when you don’t think there’s hope you take more risks.

We need to do something for prevent innocent victims for this sort of crime and to do that we need to get to the heart of what causes the crime.

Yep, not a word from them. But they weren't pesky brown people were they. Typical Reform.
We have a council Election next week. Reform came to the door. The less said about that the better 🤣

Fuck me @FlamingoFlossdid you actually just put that through AI and copy it here straight with emojis, complete with police car?

Stop. Speculating.

It clearly was AI, but it's not speculation. AI has summarised the news reports.

Rubydobydo · 28/08/2026 11:28

Not defending Reform, or any other political party, but they’ve all been rather silent on the issue.
But what do you say other than admit the widespread failings?

Maybe if this stuff (gang rivalry, drugs, violence) stopped happening the areas would stop being impoverished and start being wealthy? I think people need to start being accountable for their own values and actions and stop blaming the environment around them. Viktor Frankl’s quote comes to mind….

I say this having grown up in one of the most deprived places in Europe… before anyone accuses me of speaking from the comfort of coming from a wealthy leafy village

But the vast majority of poor people living in those areas are trying to live decent lives, which are blighted by these gangs.

Can you imagine being housed in an area where these gangs have total control, where car chases are regualr thing, where drugs on the street is just normal, where kids who want to fit in don't want fancy trainers, but knives and don't want to be on the football team but belong to a gang, where if challenge the behaviour, your house might be burnt down with your DC in it?

A long time ago I worked in an advice and community centre on a deprived and poor estate. The majority of people were great, but there were two "crime" families who ruled the estate, saw it as their fiefdom. They made their money from dealing, fencing stolen goods and general intimidation. When things did get to court nobody was prepared to give evidence because of threats and retribution. As their crime empire grew the levels of violence increased, culminating in two murders. Eventually the police did bring the key players to justice, they are doing very long sentences now but they had a good (or should that be bad?) 15 years of bringing mayhem and terror to the community they operated in.

dustabsorber · 28/08/2026 12:12

Latest Labour wheeze, let them out once they have served a 6th of their sentence.

elprup · 28/08/2026 13:22

I read the local MP called it terrorism. Is that the right word? It’s more like general thuggery and hooliganism IMO, as there is zero ideology driving these people. Anyone that drives the wrong way down a motorway should be facing attempted murder charges even if they’re lucky enough not to hit anybody.

@MulberryWedges

as to why their families are mourning them - they are still someone’s child, brother, friend and we can’t assume that they are all involved in crime. You can also me a little toerag running illegal cigarettes, fake alcohol, class b drugs and carry a weapon yet also be lovely to your nan, do the neighbours shopping and coach a little kids football team (one did the latter) they aren’t mutually exclusive.

The family will know they weren’t the best human being but they are still sad

Yes we can say that 4 or the 5 lads in the car DID have criminal records. No need for any assumptions. The information has been released by the police.

These were not one offs either.

Of those connected with the crash causers, most of those arrested have been charged with fire arms or offensive weapons offenses. These are not cuddly offenses

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce8e08rggrko
Here's the list.

The police didn't just randomly get lucky arresting all these people who were known associates. (Note they are part of these lads immediate social circle not randoms) What they were doing was widely known - that is part of the point - community intimidation. They knew exactly who to target.

This is the culture of this community these lads belonged to. People tolerated it because nothing has been done to stop it. People became part of it because it's dominated the community.

All this talk of 'nice lads'. Well fuck me, nice lads don't assault police officers, carry weapons, steal cars or drive without insurance. If you are normalising these as nice lads, I'd hate to bloody think what you class as scumbags. This is the problem. Stop trying to SocialClassWash as a way to almost excuse it. That's a massive disservice to people in the same social group who aren't pricks.

We need to have these people stigmatised as exactly what they are. It's stigma that helps stop kids joining gangs because they are no longer cool.

We had much more mass poverty in the past. But poverty wasn't an excuse for scumbaggery. Being poor didn't mean you attacked police officers. This is not normal behaviour. You need to drive the wedge in here between the scumbags and those in poverty who don't act like this.

What really depressing here is the fact that a couple of police die and there's suddenly a massive crackdown. That's utterly depressing because that tells you about the culture of the police too - it clearly wasn't worth time and resources to protect the rest of the wider community from what was known to be going on. They are not worth it. Or all deemed to be part of it.

Worse at the crimes these lads were charged with previously only reference assaults against the police. Do you really think these were the first violent assaults they've carried out? You don't go from being 'a nice lad' to assaulting a police officer and carry offensive weapons. You can absolutely guarantee they've been the shit out of some other poor sod and threatened a bunch of others and then escalating because they know they will ultimately not be punished. And it's either not been reported out of fear or the police can't be arsed to proceed with a conviction. They've only acted on those crimes that are either easy to prove (vehicle crime) or affects police officers.

It's such utter bullshit. All of it.

Let's be clear: Poverty alone doesn't turn people into scumbags. More scumbags may be poor and they are chasing a lifestyle but this is an active choice not something you HAVE to do. Lots of people don't do this. Because they aren't scum bags.

We are NOT talking about petty theft for economic survival. We are talking organised criminal activity. There is active decision making going on here and a bravo and celebration of these scumbags going on. The 'nice lads' shit is a nonsense too. Everyone calling them nice lads is really totally unaware of what shit they've done in the past? Are you fucking KIDDING me? All those people calling them this are well aware of both the incident they died in AND their previous troubles with the police. They don't care. They see it as normal acceptable behaviour that doesn't need to be confronted and dealt with. It's the biggest, shittest case of denial you will pretty much ever get. They were in car running from the police going the wrong way - you don't get much more 'caught in the act'.

It doesn't bloody matter if they were someone's brother, son etc etc. By all means mourn them and regret their deaths. But fucking hell don't suggest they were 'nice' because that just shows up you were participating in enabling and minimising and normalisation of shitty behaviour. They were lads who went wrong and that's a dreadful tragedy and you will miss them. But don't call them nice. Because that's just fucking offensive and an out and out LIE. It's disrespectful to the men they killed by their reckless, selfish and dangerous actions.

We need to challenge people minimising in every form. And yes that includes this post. Because this is the only way you even BEGIN to stop it. Every action to refuse to tolerate it, matters.

This fait accompli attitude that they didn't have any other opportunities or choices is bullshit. It's a way of allowing this complete abdication of responsibility by lads like this. Yes your life might be bloody hard, but you still are capable of not getting in the car. You are still capable of not deciding to assault a bloody police officer. You have legal capacity. Honestly the wet weekends who come up with this crap are also part of the problem. It lets the police officer the hook too. It says oh well this is a poor area, crime happens but yeah it's expensive to police and actually we can't be arsed to fund policing adequately this area because it's only poor people.

It's only because a police officer has been killed that they've decided to draft in a bunch of extra police because they've been forced to admit that no the police are absolutely not in control within the area and these scumbags rule the roost not them. That's so unbelievably sad.

And we all sit here wondering why the major political parties have massive trust issues with the public... Like seriously?!

Yep.

And I bet the local crime rate plummeted after the arrests too.

It would help a lot if politicians could bring themselves to be honest about drugs. Currently we have the worst of all possible worlds. They are illegal but easily available. The end users pretend not to know what they're funding and turn a blind eye to the violence and lawlessness in the countries where the drugs are produced and to county lines and widespread flouting of the law and tax system in this country. There's no quality control so sometimes people die from consuming a bad batch. None of the proceeds go into health care or addiction programmes or anything else that's socially useful. The trade is controlled by violent criminals and their profits fund other criminal activities like sex work and people smuggling.

Either crack down really hard on the drugs trade and bring it to an end, or accept that people want the drugs and put it on the same footing as alcohol and cigarettes. Then at least the rest of us would derive some benefit from it and organised crime would lose one of its most profitable lines.

This. They won't because they are afraid of the public reaction.

Prisons are full. Currently there isnt a lot that can be done re prison. Probably part of the current problem - these people know they won’t get prison time.

Bit there is a plan to build more.

But this is a culmination of years of austerity. Not a problem they created.

O just hope they can fix it before it what worse.

It did and the estate is now all but problem free and has lost its bad reputation.
