Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Zov · 05/08/2026 20:49

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

People can come here for a moan .. hot weather lovers can start your own thread!

@EmeraldRoulette hope to go home today, not looking forward to the bumpy roads!

cupfinalchaos · Today 07:03

I’m in Rome, 39 degrees..

Horrors. You have my sympathy. We had that in Budapest and then Salzburg last week (we’re interrailing). Now in Ghent where it’s much cooler, thankfully.

Rituelec · Today 07:28

I went to Rome 2019 and it was so hot in September!

I just seen its 32 here next week again. OmG

the80sweregreat · Today 08:29

I feel cursed by living in the south because of the weather we get. It is hard when you don’t like it too hot.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 09:31

Exactly re the south @the80sweregreat

My forecast for the whole of next week starting tomorrow is horrific. 30s and above - I cannot take any more.

EmeraldRoulette · Today 10:03

@Tiddlywinks63 hope you’re all right going home

@ConstantlyFuriosa yes the forecast for here next week is terrible

I can’t remember but it was on here. Not on a thread about the heat. Just someone chucked it into the conversation. I bet if we searched on ‘glorious’, though, it would come attached to ‘heat’, ‘summer’, ‘weather’, etc.

Does anyone think we’ve ‘beaten’ 1976 yet? And it struck me (although I’m certain it’s just a weird thing) that that was exactly 50 years ago!

Edited

Here's the Met O comparison:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2026/deep-dive-how-does-june-2026-compare-with-the-summer-of-1976

I wasn't in the UK in 1976 so can't compare from memory!

GentleSheep · Today 10:29

Here's a suggestion as to how to shield your windows from the outside, might work for some of you. We have west-facing windows and one day it occurred to me that at least the ground level window could be shielded by... green mesh that shades green houses! I have a green house and it suddenly dawned on me that I could use the same mesh rigged up outside the downstairs window. Just a couple of hooks put in the outer wall, a line attached (we used cord) and then the green mesh cut to size and attached via a clip type thing you can buy on Amazon that allows the mesh to be slid along the line. Bingo! Significant reduction in heat getting through, and of course added to that blinds inside. Every little helps as they say. Sadly can't do the upstairs window where I really need it!

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 10:56

I have some of that green mesh but alas, upstairs flat so impossible to rig up.

In an ideal world I’d have shutters on the outside.

The problem is the flat. It’s HA so very limited in what I can (or would want to pay) to do. I just need OUT.

Yes unfortunately a lot of homes in the UK are difficult in that respect.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 11:33

@GentleSheep that’s exactly what we’ve been talking about for several threads, now. Saying lots of homes are the same doesn’t help. We know that. We’re living it.

I’m at the end of my patience and so tired from months of this shit, so forgive me if I sound rude.

This weather is having such a detrimental affect on my weight too. I normally do walk-from-home DVDs on YouTube in the morning, but my living room is so hot, even first thing in the morning, that I'm struggling to do much exercise at all. I'm also finding it too hot to cook, so even though my appetite has reduced, when I DO eat I'm defaulting to those lovely but calorific pre-prepared salads that Marks or Sainsburys have (the 3 for £8 offers).

I know I need to be a lot more disciplined, but feeling like a wet rag most of the time coupled with not much sleep, really zaps what little motivation I have in the first place.

Roll on the cooler weather, when we can have soups, stews, roasts etc. Plus I love the Autumn and Winter anyway - I just have to get through this bloody incessant heat unscathed!

DeerOhDear · Today 11:41

One day looked like 36 bit now it's only 32 ! Yippee 🙄

Thesquaregiraffe · Today 12:04

I don’t know why I put myself through looking at the forecast but 32 next Wednesday and 34 on Thursday. Below 30 barely registers on my radar now.

My son and his mate tidied up the garden yesterday - it’s lovely to have the garden tidy again but the grass is just dead and brown. It’s not very inviting.

I had great plans for doing a coach to 5k plan during the summer holidays (teacher). Started off far too hot. Could probably do it now but badly twisted my ankle (went a wonderful purple and green colour) so no running for me!

DeerOhDear · Today 12:59

I think people in social housing at least need to lobby MPs to put proper air con in and not these rubbish cooling systems that places like switzlardsnd

Oh it's fine, I get it. I just joined this thread so forgive me for raking over it!

Lifeomars · Today 13:50

News on and again getting enraged by the language they are using . My suggestions are in brackets "warm weather" (relentless heat) "dry spell" (drought) and they are on a farm and the owner is telling them that soft fruit "shuts down at 28 degrees and won't grow" so they will not be able to grow it in the future "interesting" (very worrying) responded the reporter. Need to stop watching as it just makes me cross.

RhosynCymru · Today 14:09

@Lifeomars also makes me cross! Their subjective opinions especially when it’s now causing untold misery and issues even for people who claim to love it. Also overheard today “oh bit annoying as it’s hotter today than I thought it would be- but still shouldn’t complain.” Why shouldn’t you complain?! I’m clearly getting angrier by the day because I just thought it’s this bloody apathetic Pollyanna attitude that prevents anything being done collectively to mitigate this climate catastrophe!

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 15:33

I think the GBP is either fucking stupid or brainwashed.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 15:34

And yes, it is hotter today than I was expecting. Thought it was the last day of respite at 25 degrees.

ARGHHHHH.
