Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

People can come here for a moan .. hot weather lovers can start your own thread!

Not many people out today in town. I do feel it’ll have a negative affect on the economy as people don’t want to get too hot. I like an air conditioned store, but one I went into today was boiling , so either not working or can’t afford to use it!

@RhosynCymru honestly, I’d be doing exactly the same as you. If I won the lottery (and the list of what I’d do with that is getting longer) air con is definitely at the top of the list.

@DeerOhDear yes! I’m getting concerned about the fire risk too - everything is tinderbox right now and with the wind too. Someone at work said “ohh we need a good storm” and I said “noooo! I don’t want lightning as everything would just go up in smoke!”

I thought this thread would be by that mum who loves the gifs too much.

I agree with the 'be careful what you wish for' sentiment. As I have said before, I am honestly someone who doesn't mind a nice, long, hot summer. (But I do have sympathy with those who don't like the long hot summers...)

2018 was one of them, and 2020 and 2021 were fairly dry, hot summers too. And whilst we had a few 'phew wot a scorcher' type days, for the most part it was OK (if I recall correctly.) Well, for me anyway. I know some others found it a bit much.

This past 2-3 years it's been different. Much hotter, very intense, and heat that you'd expect in Southern Spain/Italy/Greece, not the United Kingdom. And the very hot weather isn't even just in the south now, I live on the North Staffs border, (top of the Midlands,) and we had it up to 36 degrees Celsius. IN MAY. And it has been 32-33 Celsius or more for weeks on end all through the summer. And the humidity is brutal some days.

I love going on little day trips, and half day trips on my days off (I work part time/work from home) but this year there have been long spells where all I could do was sit outside in the shade. So I haven't done half as much as I have wanted to.. Not much point in a long hot summer if it's brutal heat, intense humidity, and relentless.

Interesting you mention that as the other day we went into town seeking an air conditioned cafe and noticed not as many people out and about. I also hear that cinema trips are becoming popular at the moment due to their alr conditioning.

If a shop is stifling i just walk back out again Feel sorry for the staff. The reason ive postponed the rest of my dental treatment till September is because i was sick of struggling up there in the heat. Three Tuesdays on the trot its been at least 29c

I also hate the heat. Always have.
Summers used to be 24ish degrees if you were lucky. It’s so concerning that young people will just think 30 degree heat is normal for summer - it isn’t!
One of the many things I dislike about this heat is the anxiety it gives me about the future. I worry very much for my children.
I also find it distressing to see the state of my poor garden, which is such a source of pleasure and solace for me usually. I get angry at the water company bosses and OFWAT.
I realise a lot of the people that post on social media saying ‘stop moaning, it’s just summer, 1976 etc’ are doing it to deliberately upset people but they do annoy me.
I hate the feeling of constantly being fatigued and sweaty.
I’m living in the dark, curtains closed, windows shut, to keep out the heat from the sun; it’s depressing.

@zov I think this year it’s been so relentless that just keeping going has been stressful. I actually cleaned my kitchen properly today for the first time in what feels like weeks. Because every time I’ve tried to do anything I’ve just got hot, sweated a lot and then got a headache. I’ve had fewer days in the last couple of months where I’ve not taken paracetamol than I think I’ve ever had!

Theres nothing I can do about it, but I wish the heat would just fuck right off now.

exactly. I'm still amazed that summer can feel so long. It normally goes really quick. But not when it's just relentless abnormal temperatures.

Be careful as having regular paracetamol can paradoxically give you headaches!
You’re better to drink cold water with a squeeze of lime and touch of sugar and salt in for heat headaches - they will rehydrate you quicker and relieve the headache.

Yep and im not cutting down on baths and going to bed a sweaty mess. Im sick of seeing headlines to have shorter showers when i dont fucking have one.

I was starting to hate myself for being so lazy and unmotivated, but we just had a few cooler days and I cracked on with some things and felt amazing and cheerful for doing so!

Same. Cancelled my rescheduled blood test again yesterday as it was too hot! My dentist keeps reminding me to arrange a check up- again in a place with no air conditioning.
i was chatting with a Portuguese colleague today and found yet another person like me who hates summer. She actually told me the heat in England is far worse than her native Portugal.

In the 1980s if it was 23c we thought we were in a heatwave

Thanks for the new thread, it has really helped me to read that I am not alone in my hatred for this vile heat. I used to love and live for summer, but that was in the old days when we had 4 seasons with distinct characteristics. Loved wearing sandals and having painted toe nails, not having to bother with a coat, loved putting on cotton dresses and watching the flowers growing in my back yard. These days I drip with sweat, my back yard is burnt to a cinder and i am going to have to get rid of things, it is too hot to go out there and tend to the plants as the sun bakes down for hours on end and just popping out to empty the bins make me feel faint and sick It feels scary and dystopian, relentless and disturbing. I have noticed that is has got much quieter, as if most people have had enough of it too

Also agree with how hard it has been to do the simplest housework and cleaning. I have my house (and have had for 10 weeks or so,) at a very basic cleanness. If someone were to come and look at my house properly they would find so much dirt and dust bunnies in places you don't usually look! I am only cleaning the bits you can see! 😬

And as a pp said, we used to think 25-26 Celsius was hot, now we're praying for it to be that 'cool!' 😖

We’ve barely opened the curtains since end of May and I’m sick of the sound of the air conditioning unit as the cheap portable ones are noisy

My dentist has wonderful air conditioning. Its like a fridge The problem is getting there

A nice lukewarm bath sounds lovely to cool down! Being menopausal means nights are the sweatiest time for me - I have to shower in the mornings. I have a nice cold shower with the window a crack so the cooler morning air comes in, I partially dry off so the cool air really lowers my temperature.

Yeah, it’s like the darkness causes Seasonal Affective Disorder but in summer!

I hate it. I lived in Italy for decades but.. this is much worse. Teaching in July in 33 degrees almost broke me. Waking up wet with sweat... can't even go for a walk in the dagvtime. Its just shit.
