Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Zov · 05/08/2026 20:49

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

People can come here for a moan .. hot weather lovers can start your own thread!

When someone tells me they're going on holiday to Greece as it's 10 degrees cooler than the UK, it really hits home how hot it is here! I remember we were in Madrid about 25 years ago and it was ridiculously hot then, so I can't imagine how hot it must get there now! I can see us never going abroad again.

Thank you
I think it’s exhaustion from yesterday

Also, it’s been a really stressful week with the heat on top it’s just impossible

I guess everyone says relax but even trying to relax in this heat is unbearable and so uncomfortable

I hope you can try to at least rest as best you can though because this can’t go on much longer, that’s what I’m hoping

I don’t feel well ☹️

Oh poor you, i am sorry to read this.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/08/2026 15:13

Thanks
Normally, I'll just crack on with stuff

I really don't feel well enough today

But sitting down and relaxing isn't very effective when the walls are radiating heat at you. I suppose today is going to seem strikingly worse because they've got so much left to release.

I really haven't got the energy to go and sit outside. Although when the flat heats up more, I suppose I'll be forced to.

friedaklein · 15/08/2026 18:47

Am sitting by the river on a bench and there is a cool breeze. It's heavenly. I can see stormclouds. My house is a sauna but I have walked 6 k today and feel revived. Not going back home!

Hope you feel better @EmeraldRoulette

Supersimkin7 · 15/08/2026 18:47

Only just woken up. Spent last night in front of four fans and a wet sheet, most satisfying. Got to sleep at 5 (normal now) when temps went briefly below tropical and slumbered till cat brekker, fell asleep again.

So hoping next week is easier.

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2026 18:49

@EmeraldRoulette sorry you arent feeling well.

Bloody right ear is inflamed inside again which is how my double ear infection started.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/08/2026 19:28

@friedaklein you found a breeze somewhere? I swear Essex has been worse than London this year.

@Supersimkin7 you were asleep for 14 hours? Did I get confused with that?

@JenniferBooth sorry to hear that
One of my neighbours has got an ear infection and she’s puzzled but I think she’s very rundown and also it’s really weather related. She doesn’t normally get them so she asked my opinion because I do get them (though usually in winter) I just told her to go to the doctor!

editing to add - I went for a tiny plod around the block. Can confirm there is no air outside either.

It's another layer of stress and worry isn't it
It's exhausting .

I hope you feel better soon

DeerOhDear · 15/08/2026 21:26

@friedaklein we had clouds they are gone again

Thesquaregiraffe · 15/08/2026 22:19

@EmeraldRouletteim so sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. This flipping heat has just been something else.

It felt insanely hot last night and despite the air con the house just seemed to get hotter and hotter. I didn’t really sleep and ended up having really wild dreams inbetween sleeping.

Felt totally wrong locking up the house and shutting all the windows completely before going away today.

But the saving grace is…. It’s so much cooler where we are now!

Really hope that this is the break in the weather we all need!

EmeraldRoulette · 15/08/2026 22:25

@Thesquaregiraffe not all areas are expecting a break?
I mean, I’m not expecting 38 again any time soon fingers crossed
But it was 27 today and the flat is still boiling as I keep saying it won’t normally cool down till October but this year I think I’ll be lucky if it cools down in November

LlamaDuke · 15/08/2026 22:26

Things I'm looking forward to once this bastard hot weather is over (hope to God it's soon - and we get some rain):
a. A home cooked roast dinner
b. Sleeping under a duvet
c. Getting rid of the constant buzzing in my ears left by having the fan on all day
d. Going out socially (I've been living in the semi-dark, and couldn't countenance getting dressed up and putting my face on)
e. Getting out in the FRESH air

What's everyone else looking forward to?

Using the cooker to start with
Not having to keep an ear out for the fridge freezer giving up in this sweatbucket.
A hot drink.
Not having to pull all my tops out of the washing machine and stuff them in doubled up carrier bag so they dont dry and i can wear them wet.
Not having to put my head under cold water so i can have wet hair for a while
Having dry (as in not wet) hair

EmeraldRoulette · 15/08/2026 22:34

@LlamaDuke obviously for me it’s the flat not being boiling hot

air outside would be nice too

having quiet…closed windows…being able to actually get back to working out, walking etc and I was losing weight before this horrible weather started. I don’t know why it’s completely put me off my stride, possibly because I can’t really cook in here.

wearing proper clothes like jackets - I delayed buying anything as I’ve got more weight to lose so I must admit I’ve been wearing the same stuff. I do tend to see the same people so it’s not ideal. Some of my clients must think I only own two sets of clothes. But those are the only things that are thin enough fabric and smart enough.

I have had to go out socially a few times, but I didn’t really enjoy it because it’s just constant exhaustion.

I described how I was feeling to AI and that was basically a mistake because it was telling me I had heat exhaustion and I’m like yeah…. Been like that all summer.

today is one of very few days that I’ve actually ground to a halt. I have mostly been pushing through.

oh, and my skin going back to normal and not having to put on suncream every time I go out.

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2026 22:50

my fucking face feels like its on fire
so i reiterate i will not be lifting a fucking finger for any contractor they send here

JenniferBooth · 15/08/2026 22:55

Im just waiting for a neighbour to complain to Sanctuary about my late night baths, and for S to come moaning to me.

EmeraldRoulette · 15/08/2026 23:08

@LlamaDuke just thought
Also looking forward to reading a book in my own home
By the time I finish work, the flat is so hot it’s ridiculous

So having to go to the pub to read your book is just mad. Although I will say they have been very nice. I hate going to the pub on my own.

Yes ive got a couple of books i want to read. One of them is The Five by Hallie Rubenhold but it takes concentration and mine is ruined by this place
The short stories in Womans Weekly are what i can currently manage.

Thesquaregiraffe · 16/08/2026 00:00

My own house has tiles on the side of it which hold heat and has so much insulation in the loft that it heats up what should be a “cold” water tank.

We are away, in a new build (Airbnb). It’s lovely and cool outside in the garden here. The house … while absolutely beautiful, has “safety” windows so open only a couple of inches…. It’s hot - even my son is saying it’s hot and both boys (we have his best mate with us) are in the garden because it’s hot upstairs.

It’s just rough for most people I think.

One half of my house stays relatively cool throughout the year, the other half is like an oven for most of it (in fact my bedroom doesn’t need heating at all really).

something needs to change!! It’s making everyone ill! (My poor elderly dad sounded almost confused yesterday - all to do with this sodding heat!)

I think the boys have now fallen asleep outside - which of course will be cold in a few hours 😩

it’s really just shite all round.

EmeraldRoulette · 16/08/2026 00:25

@Thesquaregiraffe so the house you’re staying in is hot as well?

I can’t remember what a normal evening is like. It’s just constantly managing a hot flat. or finding reasons to leave the hot flat. It’s just horrendous.

I’m having one of those days where it’s therapeutic to complain. It’s interesting that there’s been more complaints on here today, or maybe I’m just seeing more because it’s the weekend? I don’t really hear any complaints in real life either. I realise my flat is probably worse than where most people are living, and some people are working in air-conditioned environments but I’m still surprised that more people aren’t finding it difficult. Or they are very quiet.

Yes… very much cooler location and still the house is oven like… we all have homes that are designed and built to retain heat basically. Great in the winter but not in the summer.

I’m cuddling a towel again tonight because of the sweat.

Glad this place has a washing machine!

btw really sorry for what you’re going through, it sounds horrendous. My sons mate who is with us lives in a top floor flat with his family and he’s said it was hell.

By the way we haven’t packed toiletries… (I’m blaming my son and he’s blaming me) just another bone of contention to add to the heat.
