Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

People can come here for a moan .. hot weather lovers can start your own thread!

it’s quite far, but because it’s machinery vehicles, I think that’s why the smell has travelled this far

I didn't stay in the garden... it feels kind of apocalyptic out there which is a strange thing to say... it's boiling hot and smell of burning rubber is coming from 3 miles away

@DeerOhDear yes. I mean apart from the burning rubber smell... it is freakishly hot and it's 11:30. Mad. Honestly, I don't remember it being this hot when I was camping in the outback.

i'm sure I read a comment last night about solar storms and that's why it's so hot. I should've saved it because I would really like anything that implies this isn't going to happen again.

This is the worse night of this hellish summer for me. It is not cooling down at all.

Well, to be fair, it is a lot hotter indoors.

No air is coming in no matter what I try. I can usually generate some movement with fan placement but not tonight. It’s VILE.

If living in the UK were a job, right now, I’d pack my bags and quit. This summer has been such hell. I can’t take any more of this heat. I know we’re all suffering.

When you add in the antisocial neighbours - downstairs has just woken from its stoned stupor and is being ridiculously loud - I simply cannot take any more.

When I headed out earlier, the smell of weed was quite bad

Although today is the one day that I might have actually asked them for some, because I think everyone’s hit that point of needing something….

These people who go around starting fires in this weather, I’m surprised they’re not out looking for a body of water or something. We don’t really have any though.

Must be a lot of people swimming at night tonight, I gather living near the sea hasn’t been that helpful this summer because there’s been a lot of hot air just sitting on the sea, but tonight I think it would be very helpful

I think now the issue is that buildings have retained so much heat and the fact there’s no respite means they can’t dissipate the heat buildup. It takes weeks normally for our house to lose that residual heat at the end of a long period of hot weather.

We've been lucky enough to be away for 2 of the hot spells this year. We were on the Kent coast for the May heatwave and we're currently in The Canaries (hot but breezy - the climate is actually one of the main reasons we choose to come here as we're all terrible with excessive heat)

Have been checking in regularly with the cat sitter, and older family members at home in London though. It sounds like it's been awful. We've struggled through a few heatwaves in London this year and it's been utterly miserable.

I know yesterday will have left many of you feeling despair. It did me. I joked about the other heatwaves getting me in training for this one, but yesterday had a nasty sting I hadn't seen coming. I left my windows open for as long as I could bear it, but in the end the insane level of noise pollution meant I had to shut them around 10pm. Sensory overload and a fear of the future for the children I know and love. I couldn't switch off the doomy feeling, everything in my environment was feeding it last night. Woke feeling wrung out and had a little cry earlier. Mercifully there's a cool breeze this morning and I was up early enough to have a couple of hours of relative quiet outside. I know, London, what can I expect? But most of us are in no position to up sticks and move North.

I've never denied climate change, but until the last few years I wasn't preoccupied with it either. What's really got to me this year is that the level of denial in England is directly proportionate to the insane denial of death and risk, reflected in so much of how we're organised as a society. At best it seems like a 'the show must go on' mentality, when actually the show needs a massive fucking reboot. But it feels like society is frighteningly atomised. Any sane community in the worst affected areas would be gravely memorialising the loss of wildlife and agricultural projects in the last 4 months. To learn desperately vital lessons and build resolve for real changes in how we organise ourselves. But most won't even look at what we can't afford not to see.

Rant over. I hope I change, at least. I know how easily I typically waver on that resolve myself. In many ways my carbon footprint is modest, but I know I could do more.

DH and I had planned to go for a long walk today to make the most of slightly cool weather. But felt so exhausted that I ended up slumping on the sofa, doomscrolling and doing laundry/ chores.

Im really struggling to cope and when I see rain I feel over whelming relief and then it moves and disappears.

However I would like to keep mentioning that an under investment of water companies has a great deal to answer for

It meant I managed to open the window windows at the only time that some cooler was going to come in. It’s already hot air now.

fortunately, I cancelled my plans but I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do this weekend. I really need to get out of here but there isn’t anywhere
to go. I could hang around the pub again.

So it's a bit cooler today, 21-22C, but 70% bloody humidity! Can't win. It feels as bad as when it's 28-30C!

Yep its still suffocating in the Sanctuary shithole.

No wonder I am feeling so shattered with that humidity.

Still going to try to get my 10 k this evening. And have bravely planned a day trip to Cambridge tom.

I was on a housing thread where a poster was told by someone who claimed to work in housing that every estate has to "take their share" of the antisocial ones.

Our forecast is now saying that next Thur and Fri will be 19 degrees with rain! Thing is i just don't believe it, i have seen the rain symbol so many times and then nothing other than climbing temperatures when the actual days approach. What that really troubles me is that once this hell is over we can now expect the same and worse every single year. This is not a one off, it is the new reality and it has come much sooner than anyone anticipated. I feel as if the past three months have just been a waste as all i have done is try to find ways of getting through each day and trying to survive the sweltering nights. This heat is dangerous and it is wrecking the environment, I have lost all patience with the "But it's summer, enjoy it" and want to scream at them that the planet is burning.

Some spells of warmer cannot be ruled out, especially in the south, but it looks unlikely at this time that further heatwaves will build this month.
While the meteorological summer comes to a close at the end of August it is not unusual for the UK for experience bouts of heat in September.”
