Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

We have a new baby in my wider family, totally gorgeous and we all adore him but I really worry about the world he is going to grow up in.

Fucking HA have sent me a letter with a rescheduled appointment saying that if i cancel with less than 24 hours notice its treated as failure to provide access in breach of the tenancy

That's so shitty! It's like if you're 2-3 minutes late for a medical appointment - in most cases you lose it, you have to rebook it, and it goes down on your record that you were late.

I have yet to have a medical appointment - dental, clinic, hospital, GP, or optician etc that has been on time. Always late. Sometimes less than 15 minutes, but sometimes it's over half an hour after my appointment time. The worst offenders are hospital consultants. Last time I went to a consultant I got in to see him an hour and 10 minutes after my appointment. I was so pissed off. I was very close to leaving, but knew if I did, I would probably be discharged and not allowed to see him again. And if I had been late - even 5-10 minutes - I would have been told to re-arrange. OK for him to keep me waiting over an hour though. Clearly his time is more important than mine!

I have a different opinion about medics running late. It happens at the surgery I'm registered at, nearly always because the doctor or nurse is giving the patient the time they need, rather than rushing them out after six minutes or however long it is these days.

Could be getting heat stroke in the Sanctuary sweatbucket but nooo a CAPPED gas supply is much more dangerous.

Fair enough @Handyweatherstation and I understand that things happen that they can't predict, but it's just that it's every single time... They are late every single time.....

10-20 minutes late doesn't bother me, and I am so grateful for our NHS, (and don't mean to sound moany!) But when it's half an hour, 40 minutes, 50 minutes or more late, it's quite frustrating. Not least because as I say, if you are even 10 minutes late, you're often not allowed your appointment and made to come back another day. You can even get booted off their list (like if it was a consultant.)

I have yet to visit a consultant that isn't running 35 to 60 minutes behind. (Occasionally even longer...) One consultant my friend goes to had a number of complaints put in about him, as he was never less than 50 minutes behind, and there rarely seemed to be a good reason for it. It wasn't emergency appointments, they were planned, routine appointments ... They put one of the nurses with him to work with him to try and keep him on track. Last visit she went to was only 11 minutes late.

Thing is, one time my friend's appointment was at 2.20pm (supposed to be 20 minute long appointments,) and there was one at 2pm. The 2pm one was after the one hour lunchtime. The consultant didn't come in from lunch til 2.15pm, and then faffed about in his office til 2.30pm, before calling the first lady in. So he was half an hour behind before the afternoon had started. The woman came out at 2.45pm. My friend was not called in til 3.05pm. 45 minutes after her appointment. The 2.40pm, and the 3pm appointments had arrived by then! Before she was even seen.

THAT is the kind of thing that pisses me off.

@Zov what you say is fair enough too, no one wants to be left waiting for ages. It's just that sometimes medics run over for good reasons. I've done it myself a couple of times, come to the end of the main reason for the appointment and then said 'Have you got a minute?' about something that's seriously bugging me and I've just found the confidence to speak - what I think is called a 'door handle revelation' - and I've been enormously grateful to be listened to.

I don't mind admitting that I'm biased, my dad was a GP and he complained for many years about how appointment lengths meant he was unable to give patients the time they actually needed, so he ended up giving them antidepressants instead of talking, because there was no other solution at the time. He loathed what the NHS had become.

Also, to stay on topic - it's too fucking hot!

My friend annoyingly chose an early dinner res for 6.30, so has been a mad rush after work. I was sweating mins after my second shower of the day. Can’t style my hair, can only do bit of makeup which already looks bad from sweat breaking it up. I feel so disheveled and my head hurts so don’t think I can drink much tonight

I couldn’t face the tube with my luggage in this heat so request a ‘Comfort’ uber (bit more expensive but lets you put temperature requests). I request cold obviously hoping for ac but the driver won’t put it on so I’m still boiling and will probably turn up moody as well as looking a mess

& I just know everyone else will probably look so calm and put together 🫠 (how??)

Yes I got the alert, so did DH. His came 2 minutes after mine. I heard it from several neighbours too - the same time as mine - who had their windows open.

I live in a heavily built up area and it happens every summer but WHY TONIGHT WHEN IT’S STILL 30 DEGREES AND WE HAD A WARNING?!

Yet another reason I hate where I live. I can’t see who’s doing it or I’d call the fire service or police - anything!

Today I had a little helpless cry. (I never cry).
Then at 4 pm, I had a very large G and T. ( I very rarely drink).
Then I ate a lot of cheese.
Then I went out for a walk, but it was still like Hades outside.
If this was the last heatwave, I could deal. But it's not.
