Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

My stomach is playing up because of it. Its fucking disgusting

It really feels hotter than it is. Every day it feels 3-4 degrees C hotter than it is. It was 33C here today, and felt hotter than it was last summer and the summer before when it was 37-38C.

It's different somehow. It feels more brutal, not like we're in the UK, almost like desert heat. Everything's brown and ravaged by the heat and having no rain for over 2 months. It's so stuffy. It drains you. Today was stifling outside and in. I swear I could have fried an egg on the garage wall this afternoon. It was SO hot.

I kept dropping off to sleep as my energy levels were so slow. Had to go out earlier, and was OK then, but as soon as I came home and relaxed (early afternoon) I felt zapped of energy!

Managed to wake up in time to see the solar eclipse though.

Will be getting up early tomorrow to get my daily walk in as it's due to be 36C!

I definitely think they got the temperatures wrong. But they have such a bonkers way of calculating it. I'm sure everything is kind of bouncing off surfaces in a different way because it's been so hot for so long. I'm not in a concrete jungle anymore, but it turns out the heat bounces off baked earth in pretty much the same way.

I find it very hard to believe tonight's going to go down to 16. Well it isn't.

I would have planned my summer completely differently if I had known about this. Sorry, I keep repeating that, but I can't get over what a waste of time it's been.

How's everyone doing tonight? It's SO hot in my bedroom that I can barely breathe, and that's after having windows open this evening on both sides of the house to get a cross-breeze (which hasn't worked).
I'm so drained by the lack of sleep. I'm a poor sleeper generally anyway, but I'm not falling asleep most nights until 1a.m., then sleep fitfully at best so I'm stumbling around during the day like a zombie.

I cannot express how much I fucking hate this weather! The only saving grace is knowing that I'm in good company here. I wish you all a cool and restful night, but know that's wishful thinking.

Im thinking of coming off the mini pill because apparently it can make it harder to regulate temperature. Im 53 so not at huge risk of pregnancy Yep im now THAT desperate

And yes I think they're gaslighting us about the temperatures! It's definitely 4 or 5 degrees C hotter than they say it is! 😬

Do you have a fan? Silly question probably. But given you have windows on both sides you can push more air through by positioning the fan about two feet from one of the windows facing out. Depending on which way the wind is blowing (not that there is much) place the fan on the opposite side.

So my app says wind blowing (might as well be my cat breathing on me) from south east so I’ve got a fan blowing outwards on the west side.

It has made my bedroom drop by two degrees but it takes time and patience so I’ll have this fan blowing until dawn.

Every degree helps when you live in a greenhouse!

Sorry you're feeling shite! (Sorry you are too @JenniferBooth and anyone else who's feeling rough or even just meh!) I'm a bit better now it's late night, but my bedroom is quite stuffy!

I can tolerate the heat more than some, but have been finding this summer a struggle. As has been said it seems like a waste because it's been too hot to do anything 80% of the summer so far!

Basically, I remember 2018 being awful, I think four heat waves last year according to the official definition, so a few hot days and then normal, and then suddenly this summer has been an absolute furnace the whole time. So for me, the real problems have been 2018 and now this. I would never say that I need to organise my life differently over summer except for those two.

But I do realise there are microclimates all over the country - very obvious when you get a north or south London or chatting in the office about the weather, any time of year.

Tomorrow will be vile. There will be no air because that 36 degree heat is accompanied by full on sun so my east facing bedroom will get it first thing, then my west facing living room, bathroom and kitchen will get it full blast til sunset. I’m dreading it so much.

There has been discussion about this for a while. This week, someone shared very different figures from the met office, bbc weather and accuweather if I recall correctly. I haven't gone too deep but there is a growing conspiracy around deliberate misrepresentation of the weather and temperatures.

I remember the heat from 2022 because I was in hospital for 3 weeks with no aircon and a broken ankle. It was a bad break hence the amount of time spent in there.

it was the first year I’ve known temps of 35 and 40 degrees although they were spread out. Not like this horrendous year.

I keep seeing people with tans and thinking: how on earth can you spend any time in the sun to get that colour?!

These HAs have GOT to do something. If Andy Burnham cares as much about working class ppl as he claims he will make them more accountable.

Worst summer of my life (for more reasons than the heat which is just the last straw).

Burnham had better do something. No doubt they’ll just spunk away more money on defence!

Yeah, Summer 2022 was a hot one.

2020 and 2021 were hot and sunny from March onwards. Nice all through the lockdowns. Thankfully. The sun/heat was not too unbearable either. Summer 2018 was quite intense, and all the ground went brown/no rain for 4 months. But again, not as bad as this summer.

Summer 2022 in the UK had some exceptionally hot weather, breaking the country's all-time temperature record above 40°C for the first time alongside extreme dry spells.

Yet, as I said earlier, it feels worse/hotter this summer, even though we haven't hit 40C this year yet. It has been 30C or higher on more days this year than any other though. Around 40 days have been 30C or higher! 😬 I think this may be why it feels worse/hotter than previous summers because most places are not cooling down.

It's just a continual HEAT! With very little reprieve. It has gone 'cooler' a few times, down to 23-24C, but not long enough for the country and all the infrastructure to cool down. It goes back up to around 30C after just a few days, and stays high for around 8-10 days before going a bit cooler for 2 days! (And then it goes over 30C again!) As has been said, there is no respite.

Does hosing water on terraces and steps help?

Hoping evaporation cools things down, I’ve been chucking buckets of water daily.

Inner London and I am not going out tomorrow. Practically no one else is now locally - park is parched and empty.

Hello people today was v hard. Cool wise I was ok ,I didn't go out in it but I've sriggled with anxiety as so many fires are starting up.
Tomorrow is going to get v hard
We have sheets up at the window and at least the small savings grace is shorter days.
Ive never wanted rain so much..BBC shows Monday as rain but other apps don't.

Re the last hot summer I remember a really hard stretch of about 4 days ?

This is my forecast from Saturday onwards (after 36 tomorrow with a night that won’t drop below 20 and 32 on Friday). If this changes again I’ll be furious!

North Essex and im not going out tomorrow either Had enough

I’m not going out either (Cambridgeshire) but it will be stifling indoors. I just get so worried about my little cat too. So I’d feel awful locking her in while I piss off to the cinema or whatnot to get some aircon.
