Heatwave Support Thread Part Three.

Can't believe we even need a third thread. The summer heat really has been relentless hasn't it? Since mid May virtually, we have had unprecedented heat, 4-5 degrees Celsius hotter than predicted most of the time, high humidity, half the country in drought, constant record breaking temperatures, and 30 degrees Celsius or higher, on more days this summer than ANY other summer.

And there doesn't seem to be any end to it, anytime soon!

Some people are just about coping, and some people are really struggling, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Here's a thread where everyone can get together and have support each other.

By the way, as the poster who submitted the previous thread said... This is ONLY for those who hate this heat, and heatwaves, and struggle to sleep because it’s unbearable, struggle to be outside in it, and struggle with it inside their home too. And for those who feel ill from the heat.

People can come here for a moan .. hot weather lovers can start your own thread!

supposed to be 36 here on Thursday. I think I’m going to into the office even though I know it’ll be only me there - at least I’ll be cooler though.

I’d like to say “I’ve cracked it!” With the portable air con but whilst I feel quite comfortable at the moment it’s still “only” 25 (apparently). Tomorrow is saying 33 and Thursday 35.

I have two days booked off work straddling the bank holiday weekend but I’m seriously considering cancelling it and waiting until it’s cooler when I might actually enjoy the time … I could take all of the October half term off! No school run and fingers crossed considerably cooler weather!

Really glad I've got holiday booked for next week.... another heatwave this week means another essentially paralysed A&E in my local hospital because of all the increased admissions from conditions worsened by the hot weather and hardly any discharges home....the other week on one day there was essentially a ward and a half worth of patients waiting for beds in A&E....the pressure this weather is putting on hospitals up and down the country is insane

And I think I'm now having a migraine coming on courtesy of the slightly cooler weather today, so that's fabulous....

Id love to see the stats on A&E admissions caused by overheating housing

Was watching This Morning today and Rochelle was moaning about the air con in the studio saying it was freezing

Eating and being hot is one of my triggers. Apparently, your body sends blood to the digestive system and if it is hot there isn’t enough blood to digest and keep you cool.

A tube commute would probably be impossible I’d be collapsing. I’m like a blood Victorian heroine, waving my feckin’ hankie and drooping, it’s embarrassing,
I’ll drive to work on Thursday where it’s air conditioned and hide there all day.

Unfortunately, in my hospital at least, patients only have the primary medical issues(s) given for their admission eg. dehydrated, heatstroke, aki, UTI, heart failure or say social problem (not coping at home), fall, requesting psychiatric help and not something that led to it eg. poor housing....I don't know if such data gets captured somewhere else in the system down the line.

She opened her flat door and I felt like I was hit with a wall of heat. Well, I probably was because she was only wearing T-shirt and knickers. But it made me wonder if people feel like that when I open the door? Also, because it was fresh outside, it probably felt worse. And then we chatted and by the time I came into my flat, I was probably used to it. She lives on the opposite side to me.

I do know that all the flats are like saunas. Perhaps you get more comfortable with your own sauna than someone else’s. I was convinced she got more air on her side of the building, but I guess not.

I think this is helpful to the water company because they don’t have to declare it a longer outage or something? Unfortunately, I wasn’t here or I could’ve had a shower then. So they don’t have to call it a 24 hour outage yet. Some parts of Essex have been without it since Sunday, apparently. I’m amazed it is not a bigger story.

It’s like in the winter when parts of Kent were without water for ages and when it finally came back, the authorities couldn’t decide whether or not it was safe to drink. I think that might have happened to them more than once.

I do feel massively stressed.

There seem to be some pretty massive outages in Essex so I doubt you saw ours but I think they just can’t cope because all the resources are elsewhere? There’s basically a small network of roads that’s all affected by one pump I think it is.

The fact that it came back twice is probably good news. Maybe the pump doesn’t need replacing entirely. Neighbour said it was full power. Weird.

Same. I have to travel on the train as its my eldest birthday and they're at Uni :(

I’m recovering from lung surgery, breathing is hard enough without this incessant heat.
I’m lucky that my house is relatively comfortable, but I’m very aware of how it’s affecting so many people.
Tomorrow I am planning to do as little as possible, no other option, but for those who have to work etc all I can say is I totally sympathise.
I worked in a hospital through the 1976 heatwave, definitely no air conditioning and I remember sweat running off me, splitting headache etc.
It wasn’t as relentless or as hot then but I ended up on the verge of heatstroke.
Like everyone on here I absolutely dread this being the norm.

I’ve just read that we’ve gone 60 days without any rain. 60! This can’t be good can it?.

Already sweating and uncomfortable and it’s only 9am. There’s barely a breeze either - I am dreading tomorrow.

It is unprecedented to have so many days without rain.
Yet it’s only summer isn’t it 🙄🙄
This is just the start too .. it is depressing, but not much anyone can do

Debating going for a very long walk during the eclipse. Because the sun will be a bit covered up, won't it? So it should be cooler.

I think I'll just be stuck indoors tomorrow and possibly Friday.

I think it’s hotter than they said in there are people sunbathing in our garden at lunchtime

I mean, people really do like this so… wish I was one of them. I’m pretty much convinced that the people who like this are also the people who cope fine when it’s cold. Just some people are not bothered at all about extreme of temperature. So someone who enjoys a skiing holiday will also enjoy a sunbathing holiday.

That’s just my random observation for today

I got distracted by the water thing so I was going to see if I could book some air-conditioned office space today and tomorrow but it’s too late now. I also don’t really want to get on the bus! Props to all the people keeping everything going they do such an amazing job.

That is great that you rate the portable i think that's all we will be able to get here.

Cobra is meeting today. Let's hope the urgent building of new revsoirs is mentioned and expanding what's there .

What can they do though ? Building new revsoirs is vital but takes years and you need rain too.
maybe they will cloud seed?

Back in a hot flat. No lovely cool coastal holiday home for this one. 27 indoors. Hot. Out of practice. Forecast 35 tomorrow.

Going to decamp to ex's soon. Washing time and going to watch the eclipse.

We don't necessarily need huge reservoirs. Smaller artificial ones are probably quicker to build. Plus us all getting waterbutts etc. for watering the garden.

The issue is the appalling infrastructure we have that can’t move water out of the reservoirs to the increasing population.

I agree, we need more reservoirs but I do think that governments have ignored the practicalities of water transport for a very long time

I’m not a big fan of Cobra meetings in this situation. It just seems like a PR thing which has worked to some extent because people tend to demand cobra meetings in emergencies. I would just like an emergency meeting. We passed the need for emergency meetings on infrastructure quite some time ago.

I’m quite prepared to give Andy Burnham a chance - if they can go about water transportation with the same vim that they have used to override other Planning consent, I actually wouldn’t complain. It’s just amazing that they are prepared to override Planning for some things, but not the things we actually need….

Im invested in the eclipse just to see it obscured for a short time !
