Moving on to the disabled because immigration is falling so that group can’t be blamed for everything for much longer. It’s almost as though Pastor Niemoller was onto something…

I think the immigration- particularly small boats - worked so well as it found an actual physical group presence folk could go and shout at and rally against - raise hatred quickly.
The disabled - thank god - aren’t stuck together in a physical place to be harangued and photo’d etc.

I’m just musing here - going after anyone and any group like this is abhorrent - but I’ve felt a while that when the hateful folk identified the asylum seekers being an issue - it was a final perfect model to raise hatred and cause division - simply due to people being able to find groups of the people chosen as the problem.

Sadly I do think Pastir Niemoller was indeed onto something- and also that we’re watching a replay of 1930’s right now 😢 - though I continue to try to find ways not to believe this is happening and I’m wrong.

The problem is that this gives an impression of Reform actually having some thought out policies.

However unachievable these policies would be in practice this will, in some people's minds, validate their claim to be a serious political party.

No idea why the smile but it is despicable😔

I notice they are keeping the triple lock though. So not all benefits are bad.

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2026 10:51

How often do they use European (EU) countries as a model?

I guess that for most reformites, US model is unacceptable

Ofcourse no mention of how those systems are funded or how much it would cost to change to it.

But then the reform establishment will have private health care anyway.

And only removing Pip from working age disabled. Can’t hit their core voting group.

Apparently 18% of the working age population of Clacton claims Pip. Nearly 10,000 people, that’s a lot of votes. Cracking election publicity ammunition for the other parties in the next by-election.

A thread on 'suicidal empathy'

https://bsky.app/profile/sundersays.bsky.social/post/3mt6r7jwb5c22

"This is not generosity. It is suicidal empathy" writes Robert Jenrick (Telegraph www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/08/15/dumping-young-people-on-welfare-isnt-compassion-its-neglect/) quotes in para 3 of the BBC report, with a link.

"Suicidal empathy" is also the core phrase Elon Musk wants to popularise to promote remigration, political violence + civil war

You assume that they will realise it will impact them/their Dad/their child.

They won’t.

It’s always more exciting to punish others.

It’s up to the other parties to make it explicit so the dots are joined for them and push the message hard.

How can they do that?

It didn't work with Brexit, it didn't work in the US

Door to door. Do you receive Pip? Let me show you on my iPad how much you’ll lose if it’s taken away. Illustrated, costed examples on all campaign material and social media saturation. The same way all political messages get cut through.

As if people open their doors to listen to it.

MN posters certainly wouldn't.

I think people have to feel it to believe it. But I don't want it to get to that.

Yes, but in religion, who listens to the antichrist ?

The by-election is over and Reform are attacking disabled people.

The original BBC headline on this parrotted Reform's press release without any push back.

This headline gave me the absolute rage at 3 am, so I made a complaint. I suspect the BBC had many. They just parroted the Telegraph's article/press release. Awful amateur journalism.

It’s not amateur though. The BBC want GBNews viewers. To do that they have to report Reform word for word.
(obviously it won’t work because establishment /blob, blah blah)

placemats · 16/08/2026 11:48

What have the BBC ever done for us?

Why complain ? Just don't pay your licence fee. From chattering among my younger acquaintances, few under 30s do.

I think it's important to complain . I am very happy to pay my licence fee, and I am by definitely not under 30.

Maybe I'm too old now ? But unless I have a specific result in mind, I don't complain anymore. Because the things that vex me aren't some accident that can be fixed with a huddle. They almost invariably turn out to be by design. And I am not a monster. There are only so many times you can see that flicker of hope in someones eyes die when they realise the same. Because that's when you know they are too sharp to be in customer services.

The phrase 'suicidal empathy', has a sick and sinister tone to it. Very much out of the neo Nazi phrase book. Edit for link.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz977nxww1jo

Edited

I’ve been out all morning for a walk and coffee with a friend.

Whilst she went to buy coffees I had a quick look at my phone and saw the Telegraph news reports and Jenricks “suicidal empathy”.

I didn’t get a chance to read properly as she returned but I couldn’t believe he actually said that.

People won’t be financially supported if they are too ill to work unless they meet a yet undefined criteria of severely disabled.

Community support doesn’t put a roof over your head or food on your table.

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2026 13:17

Yesterday someone was wearing a t-shirt with the slogan

We Blame Society ,But We Are Society

dontcallmelen · 16/08/2026 13:18

Exactly Itsgettingweird Cameron did it with the Big Society nonsense & dismantled & virtually destroyed swathes of resources & support which were paid by the government/local authorities previously & look where that got us
such wickedness from Jenrick.

LizzieW1969 · 16/08/2026 14:07

I’m not worried that Reform will ever be in a position to put any of this rhetoric into practice, but I don’t trust Kemi not to go down a similar route.

LizzieW1969 · 16/08/2026 14:09

Thank you for the kind words of support for Lightning, he really is the loveliest of cats and my DH has also become very attached to him (to his own surprise).
